I've found that a mudflap there has been very useful in keeping the
drivetrain much cleaner, even though in my case it's keeping more dust
off the chain than water, and it works for water, too.

That Rohloff hub is amazing; I hope you've seen this:

http://videos.mtb-news.de/videos/view/3575

I wonder if there is a video like that about the SON hubs.

One of my dreams is to live to see frames like Quickbeams and otheres,
and parts like the Rohloff made in the USA again, made by my high
school students... MUSA parts!

Eric - do you have that rear fender optimized for wheel removal?
track ends + fenders + IG hub seems like it could be a little finicky.

Very cool.

Speaking of Sturmey, it looks like the 3-speed fixed hub is finally
availablein europe:

One of those would be fun on a quickbeam!

The reflective tape on Eric's wheel is more eligant that what I did.
I purchased some relfective tape from RBW and cut it into short
lengths and stuck it between the spokes.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/16951...@n08/3197299097/

I also put reflective tape ON the spokes.
http://www.lightweights.org/store/home.php

I kind of got carried away with the reflectors and lights when I
started riding the bike to work a couple times each week.

Re: [RBW] Re: Continuing Quickbeam Saga

2010-01-02 Thread Eric Norris
That is indeed a Sturmey Archer hub. And yes, the cabling and
mounting is much cleaner than the Rohloff, although that's a very fine
unit as well. I particularly like the J-Tek bar-end shifter (many
thanks to the member on this list who let me know about them, and to
Jim at Hiawatha Cycles for getting it to me).

I like the non-aero routing of the cables, which I think lends the
bike a more classic look. I've just finished reading and drooling
over The Golden Age of Handbuilt Bicycles (Christmas gift from my
mother-in-law), and it confirmed my notions of how a randonneuring
bike should look.

And ... the rear wheel has to be deflated to get it in and out of the
frame. Other than that, it's pretty straightforward. The cable for
the shift mechanism comes on and off the hub without tools, and the
wheel is otherwise like a singlespeed or fixed gear from that point on.

2010-01-02 Thread Eric Norris
The rim reflectors are from a company called Fun Reflectors
(http://www.funreflector.com/
). They make reflective tape in a variety of fun shapes and colors
(http://funreflector.com/gallery.html
). The rim reflectors are here: http://funreflector.com/shop/
shop.html (scroll down to the bottom of the page). Their black
reflective tape is very cool--not quite as reflective, but during the
day it's almost invisible when applied to black surfaces (I have some
on the black rims of another bike).
