I would strongly recommend going the used/craigslist route. Such a better value, she can get SUCH a better bike going that way, even if she wants to take it to the LBS to get a full tune-up/service. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Decent $500-$600 off the shelf bike???
I would strongly disagree with Zack. Buying used is not a good idea. There are just too many risks, too much screwing around, and too much pressure to make a quick decision (selecting from a limited number of choices) for the novice used bike shopper. Better to buy something new from a bike shop. It need not be steel, or even Riv-ish. Chances are, unless she has already drunk the Kool-aid, the bike she chooses won't be even remotely Riv-ish, which is fine. I dunno Jim if that kind of fear is warranted. If this person has access to a decent wrench most bike repairs are pretty straight forward, in my experience. Re: [RBW] Re: Decent $500-$600 off the shelf bike???
Who is doing the buying and setup? Stevie's, where I have just started working, has that Nishiki Mixte, tuned, for $180 plus tax -- just one example. I've bought very nice schlep around bikes -- Raleigh Sportses, Schwinn Collegiates, Surburbans, and ilk, Nishiki mixte, etc, etc, etc, from Goodwill, all in good condition, all for under $60 (an some for $24.95) and, even if needing some work, easily tuned and lubed and adjusted by even a semi-competent mechanic. It all depends on the selection available and who is buying and refurbishing. That said, there are all sorts of nice off-the-shelf basic bikes. Re: [RBW] Re: Decent $500-$600 off the shelf bike???
I admit to harboring a stereotype that this young woman just wants a comfortable, reliable bike to ride, and does not care to get into a project refurbing an obscure antique. Perhaps I'm wrong. I realize that some used bikes are a good deal, and need little or no TLC to be a good rider. But it takes some skill to identify these. And even if you only find high quality used bikes on your local CL, it's easy to feel pressured to buy one that isn't ideal. At a bigger shop, at least a customer could try several bikes side by side. Plus, there's a warranty, maybe a deal on accessories, etc. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Decent $500-$600 off the shelf bike???
Well while I doubt she wants to rebuild the SA hub on a Raleigh Sprite there are many levels of used bikes. I got a late 90s motobecane about 10 years ago that someone had traded in for their new ride. LBS gave it a good tune up and said it had something like a 30 day warranty to see if anything went major wrong. I rode it for a long time and it was a sweet ride, so sweet someone else really liked and stole it... :( I believe I paid $175, spent 40 on a decent seat and 20 on some new brake pads, so $200ish for a bike I never would have been able to afford in the late 90s new. Re: [RBW] Re: Decent $500-$600 off the shelf bike???
I agree with Jim's POV completely, and not becuase I work at a shop. For someone looking to gain access to cycling or riding a bike on a regular basis, getting a decent new bike (if it fits their budget) is usually the best overall value for that person. With new bikes, one gets all new compnents, a service warranty, and usually a good deal on accessories at the POP. One also gets to ride various sizes and models and choose their favorite in their timeframe and comfort level (assuming the shop is not overly pushy). With used bikes, you get used components with typically unknown history and reliability. Sure, if the person buying the used bike is mechanically inclined, or has easy access to services/knowlege, time, extra money, or prior cycling experience to choose, repair, and service a used bike, then it could be a good value. From my experience it is not a good value monetarily or time wise for someone to invest in a non bikeshop, overhauled, used bike for their first bike. It will usually turn into a money/time pit, and generally deter someone from riding by bumming them out. I've seen it happen time and again. Used bikes can be a good choice for people who are already invested in bikes, cycling, tinkering, etc. I second the vote for the Jamis Coda Sport. Lots of sizes, steel, versatile, reliable durable components, and generally fits the proposed budget. A very good value overall IMHO. Though ultimately, it is up to Dustin's sister to choose the bike that is right for her needs and goals. Jim Thill writes: I admit to harboring a stereotype that this young woman just wants a comfortable, reliable bike to ride, and does not care to get into a project refurbing an obscure antique. I don't even think that counts as a stereotype. Some of the people on this list love tinkering with their bikes. That's fine, but it's not even representative of people who already love and ride bikes, let alone a new rider who, probably, just wants to ride. Maybe Dustin loves tinkering and will help his little sis out, but otherwise, I too think she should go to a bike shop-- perhaps with her brother to help her in case she ends up at a shop that wants to push her toward whatever the racers are riding nowadays-- and test ride some bikes. You might poke around here: look at RoadUrban. I've seen the frames. Tigged, old school design, Raleigh Sprite copies. Lot's of good advice here already. Additional 2-cents: Missing Link in Berkeley is having their annual Trek Fest sale - might be something there. We had a used Bikes Direct Daws as my son's first road bike - was decent, but had the aforementioned low end parts. He currently has a KHS Flite 210 - kind of their entry touring bike. Takes bigger tires - have 32's on it right now, and it looks like it could go to 35-38's. Lot's of braze-ons, on a tig welded steel frame. Usual low-end parts, but we've been upgrading over time. And, if you're interested, we have an REI Diamondback hybrid that we'll sell you real cheap. Kid outgrew it, but he's ridden 60k rail trails on it. 19 in frame. Rivish set up. the KHS flite is the low cost bike I picked for my ~20 something daughter, steel frame and fork and fits some big tires as Nick mentioned. I swapped out the stem for something shorter and put on some narrower bars.
