That would've be '04/'05 thereabouts...whenever the Glorius/Wilbury were
first introduced. I rode a red one around the big building, but don't
remember which decals were on it. It might have been the Glorius currently
for sale here. Wonderful bikes.

[RBW] Re: Get a Betty Foy, old man

2013-04-02 Thread bwphoto
I'd have to agree that at least in my case it seems to be a flexibility
issue. I have RA and had to quit riding for about ten years until things
got under control. When I first tried to ride again last year it took the
better part of the summer before I could mount my Sam. I've been working
regularly on hip and leg flexibility and it is getting easier to swing my
leg over the saddle. I am however, starting to consider the possibility
that the damage to my joints and muscles from RA may not return to the
level of flexibility I used to be able achieve. So I'm looking seriously at
mixte frames especially for my Xtracycle.

Even tho I'm 66 I don't feel it either physically or mentally so it takes
constant and conscious attitudinal adjustment focus on where I am now and
see my current limitations as changeable with extra work.

Having to switch to a mixte frame won't stop me from riding.

When you stop and think about it, it makes one wonder why mixtes and
ladies frames *weren't *the standard for bike frame design all along for
both sexes and why top tubes even came along.
It is only natural for a human to need a frame that has total clearance
between the legs. That would make the most sense for mounting/dismounting
 and emergency dismounts.

Good question... I wonder.
Maybe limited by 19th century metallurgy they weren't as strong, so had to
be seriously overbuilt. Then the racer-set didn''t like them, so the were
relegated to utility bikes, and then to utility bikes for people with
skirts. I'm just making that up of course, but you're right, had to be some
reason for the design to not be popular.

Grant has often talked of the natural engineering unity of a diamond frame
-- more strength for less weight. I can't remember the bibliographic
details, but it came up often in the RR.

When you stop and think about it, it makes one wonder why mixtes and
ladies frames *weren't *the standard for bike frame design all along
for both sexes and why top tubes even came along.
It is only natural for a human to need a frame that has total clearance
between the legs. That would make the most sense for mounting/dismounting
 and emergency dismounts.
