Well, I'd read hemorrhoid cream ads if you wrote them. Since discovering
Rivendell online I have soaked up all your words on websites, Readers, books,
wherever they were. I cannot wait for the next book, and chances are there's a
whole lot of other folks who feel exactly as I do. Self-promote away!!!

It's an option, but it would require more self-promotion than I'm
comfortable with. The original book plan has been modified, and there's
bike content for sure. I probably won't say much about it, to avoid a major
public belly flop...but *I *think it'll be a good one. It's taking forever
because it's another "nights and weekend" book.

2017-03-29 Thread Peter Adler
Let me Wikipedia that for you:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fop

Olof's got an excuse: "Fop", as a somewhat pejorative term for a
fashion-conscious dandy/dilettante, appears to be a primarily English
language term.

A "fop chariot", obviously, is a vehicle used to convey a fop around. Back
in the day, it was probably something like a hansom cab or a Berlin, driven
for the fops by some gin-soaked lower class lout. BSNYC's implication is
that now, it's an expensive shiny bike which is never ridden more than two
miles at a time: The distance from the condo to the hipster brewpub, or
Whole Foods, or that cool new Uzbek-Ecuadoran fusion cafe. In his area,
he's probably not completely wrong. He wouldn't be wrong in the Mission
these days; probably not in large parts of Seattle, LA, Chicago, Austin or
Boston, either.

For a bike/Riv tie-in, WP's See Also: list includes "hipster". Each of us
might examine our own conscience, to draw whatever conclusions are
appropriate.

supermarkets, right next to the fixies in

"We don't carry Dapper Dan. We carry FOP."
It amuses me greatly to refer to my "fop chariot:" Quickbeam, Brooks,
painted to match fenders and stem. It's apt.

“For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbors, and laugh at
them in our turn?”

I quit Bike Snob cold turkey about six months ago, about the same time I
turned off the email digests from this list. Seemed like there was more to
spend my time on every single day. Turns out there wasn't. :^)
I went through phases of reading the comments. In the old days, they were
funnier than the blog.

Maybe I'll read today's, and then who knows what'll happen? I may lose my
six-month chip.

Fop chariot is a pretty ridiculous insult; I've taken to calling my
handbuilt frames (and the machines I built around them) "bespoke fop
chariot(tm)"s (and a frame I replaced the rear triangle on as a sem-bespoke
fop chariot) as a tip of the hat to the snob.Admittedly, I don't go
quite as far down the rabbit hole as some of the bicycles as conspicuous
consumption people and websites do, but poking fun at my own bicycle
clutter isn't the most traumatic thing I've done to myself.

BSNYC/Eban Weiss is faltering; it has been 10 years and he has done well to
keep the blog as interesting and humorous, generally, as he has done. But I
can't see him continuing more or less daily for much longer.

Still, while he can obviously be a jerk, he is also in general mordantly
funny, and that is pretty rare.

I'm with Patrick and Bob B. here. I think the Snob's hilarious and read the
blog daily. Today's post got a few chuckles out of me. Luckily I didn't have a
class at the time or my students would've given me strange looks--even more so
than usual.

[RBW] Re: Grant coached Bike Snob on today's blog post

2017-03-27 Thread Bob B
I would respectfully disagree, Bill. I'm a daily reader (though I don't
bother with the commenting; by the way, the dumb podium "FIRST" thing is
not unique to his blog, but is rather common on blogs with lots of
followers and active commenters). Most of what's amusing about the blog is
his take on localized NYC-specific biking experiences, from dealing with
traffic, terrible bike lane design, bike culture criticism, and really
pleasant-to-read ride reports. Anyone who rides a bike for transportation
(like me) in New York City probably gets more out of it than the west
coasters here, so I understand why the blog doesn't have much of an appeal.
NYC bike commuting is... another animal compared to California riding, and
that's what the blog is about.

I'll also say that if you actually bother to read it, it can be super
funny. And he shares Grant's penchant for taking a critical stance on bike
industry marketing trends, often extending that commentary in the form of
irreverent "product reviews" of ridiculously overcomplicated cycling
accessories marketed on Kickstarter accounts.

Most people who "don't read him" use the truly Yogi Berra - esque
justification: "I never read Bike Snob, because Bike Snob is never funny"
