[RBW] Re: How Much Tape is Too Much Tape?

2009-03-18 Thread Angus

Perhaps it is a hand size thing...

I have large hands and find larger diameter bars more comfortable. My
Atlantis has two+ wraps of un-shellaced cotton which I find more
comfortable than the single wrap on other bikes. I also prefer wider
brake lever hoods.

Oury's are my favorite MTB grip; it appears they make a glow in the
dark verson now. :-)

You might take a bit of a test ride with a double-thick cork wrap before you
shellack it down. I've found that thicker grips actually are really tiring
 to my hands.

For example, I tried Ourey mtb grips for a couple rides, but got hellacious
hand cramps with them and went back to thinner grips.

I think Cyclofiend was refering to two layers of cork wrap not cloth
wrap, and yeah, I agree the OP should try the two layers of cork first
before shellacking.

One other consideration is how much padding your gloves may have, if
you wear them.

[RBW] Re: How Much Tape is Too Much Tape?

2009-03-18 Thread Joe Bartoe

I'll chime in here as well. I usually re-use old bar tape to pre-wrap the tops
of my bars starting at the brake hoods, working toward the center sleeve. Then
I wrap the whole bar with the new bar tape. I generally use cork, but have
lately been using the fizik tape as the top layer.

I double-wrap the handlebars on my wife's bikes and she likes it a lot. The
last time I re-wrapped the bars on her Cross-Check, I just left the base
layer in place and re-wrapped the top layer. I've never shellaced cork tape
before but I'm sure you'd still be able to notice a gel pad or an extra
layer of cork.

[RBW] Re: How Much Tape is Too Much Tape?

2009-03-17 Thread Big Paulie

Another option I've used with success is to remove the old tape, and
use strips of that used tape in lieu of gel. The thin but noticable
addition of padding takes out some of the harshness of a single taped
bar (if indeed that's your perception of same). It also doesn't add as
much to overall diameter compared to a double taped bar.

I shellac cork tape on my bikes. It has no effect on the cushioning.
It does provide a smoother surface and makes them easier to clean.

I've never had shellac'ed bars before. Will they still have the give

 underneath?

[RBW] Re: How Much Tape is Too Much Tape?

2009-03-17 Thread Esteban

I've used shellaced cloth over cork. You get the qualities of both -
the cushion of cork with the durability of shellac'd cloth. I usually
wrap the cork very tight, and with little overlap. This helps remedy
the fat-bar effect.
