Re: [RBW] Re: I raced my Riv.
The gravel in Flint Hills of Kansas is notorious for shredding tires. Its not unusual for people to get 6 flats during the race. Consider that the Native Americans used the flint for their arrowheads. [RBW] Re: I raced my Riv.
Tony, I hear you about the tunnel vision. On the car ride along the route back to Emporia, I realized I had passed several herds of cattle and not even noticed them. Maybe coming from a rural background I'm just used to being around cattle. The Sam handled the rough roads beautifully! I've even taken it out on some smoother single track and am surprised at how capable it is. I actually swapped out the albatross bars for noodle drop bars two days before the race. IMHO, the alba bars are hands down the most comfortable bars I've ever ridden, but it's hard to get a good aero position and I like the brakes out front when riding down the rough and lose hills. They seemed to be a better choice for the DK especially if the winds would have been stronger. I went with cork tape versus shellacked cloth on the drops to dampen some of the vibration. I figured either the Force Field Fatty Rumpkins or Schwalbe Marathons were the best options for riding roads covered in sharp flint. Not a lot of other options in 650b. I could not believe how many riders were flatting. I saw a least a couple people flat in the first mile or two. I will probably save the Rumpkins for next years DK and go with a lighter, faster, more supple tire. I was also running them at 45 PSI and probably should have gone lower. How did the roads in the DK compare to the Alamanzo and Trans-Iowa. I also should have used a Revelate type frame bag with a bladder and easy access to food. The Riv Boxy Bag I used for food and energy supplements swayed a lot and the zippers were hard to open while riding. I also would have preferred not to use my Camelback. Like you Tony, I went a little overboard and was too much stuff. Chad -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: I raced my Riv.
Chad, I can't believe I rode by without noticing your bike!!! I must have had the tunnel vision going with the road being so crowded early in the race. How did the Sam perform on the rough roads with your tire choice and mustache bars? I was amazed at how stable the Atlantis was in the rough stuff and how fast and far I was able to coast down the hills. The vibrations from the stiff tires with too much air pressure really wore on me towards the end of the race; I might wrap a layer of cork tape on the handlebars to see if it absorbs some of the vibrations. Fortunately the roads smoothed out for the last 20-30 miles. I am sorry to hear about your mechanical problems; you will have to give it a try again next year. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Force Field Fatty Rumpkins! Awesome. Way to thumb your nose at the Supple Zealots. Those FFFs are S for Stout, not S for Supple. I looked down and my crank was wobbling side to side so I wasn't able to use my big ring. I though a crank arm was lose and made sure both sides were tight. I tried to soldier on, but the grinding turned in to creaking and my left side crank arm was pushed over and rubbing through the lip of the bottom bracket and the drive side arm was pushed out and could be wiggled up and down and metal grounds were coming out. The BB was toast. I had never crashed or hit any objects with the crank. My LBS mechanic was at the race for support and agreed it was toast. It was the 107mm bottom bracket (Tange?)that came installed in my Sam when I got the frame from Riv and I had the bike shop prep and assemble the bike and thoroughly check everything during assembly and 2 days before the race. I was pretty upset, but can't really blame Riv or the LBS for a bad BB. I've attached pics of my Sam 2 days before (country bike version) and a day after the race (gravel racer). Tony, you were not the only Riv in the Dirty Kanza this year. I was riding my new Sage Green 650B Sam in the Half Pint and saw you pass me when we first hit gravel. I also saw your Atlantis outside the theatre Friday night and had to take a pic since I figured the Rivs would be few and far between in the DK. Unfortunately, I had to drop out at the water stop 28 miles in because my bottom bracket went out. I was really disappointed since I probably had less than 200 miles on the Sam and was just getting in to the fun part of the race. I will say the 28 miles I rode were tough and I'm not sure I could of made the full 111. This was my first endurance event, but definitely not my first time on gravel. My goal was to at least make it to the 59 mile checkpoint. The guys I rode with that finished were pretty beat up. I can't imagine doing 200. FWIW, most of the guys I rode with were running Clements MSO 40mm or Surly Knards and did not have any flats. I was running the Force Field Fatty Rumpkins and also had no problems. I used the small ring several times on the Almonzo because there was many more long and steep hills with my Garmin measuring over 5400' in 102 miles. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-rzETNadtcyU/U44VzYpBDLI/AC4/wqcyfxur0Kg/s1600/photo.JPG I rode the Duremes because they were already on the bike and I had heard horror stories of the razor-like flint cutting tires to shreds; I saw scores of cyclists changing flats. Before the race, I had thought about buying a Rawland Stag and using some of the parts off of the Trucker to make a dedicated gravel grinder, but I think I will upgrade the wheelset on the Atlantis and try some of the new gravel tires that are hitting the market. The Clement MSO was by far the most popular tire and I will seriously consider these when I get the new wheels. Just out of curiosity, did you see many people running MTB handlebars rather than drops? On Monday, June 2, 2014 9:21:13 PM UTC-5, Tony McG wrote: My Atlantis was not the only Rivendell in the Almonzo 100, but I am pretty sure that there was not another Riv in the Dirty Kanza 200 or Half Pint. The bike performed flawlessly except for my sloppy friction shifting. About a year ago, I drove up to Spring Valley, MN and rode with Jim Thill and a bunch of country bike cyclist on the Almonzo 100 course. After that experience, I decided that gravel was a lot safer and more scenic than riding on pavement. I built a Surly LHT into a gravel grinder and started riding with Guitar Ted on Saturday mornings for a 3-hour gravel ride. I found the Atlantis on this forum and realized that it was a much nicer ride than the Trucker; the Surly has been hanging in the garage since. I wasn't out to win, just finish. I haven't heard where I placed in the Almonzo, but I finished the DK Half Pint in the top 1/4 of the starters and the top 1/3 of the finishers. I carried too much stuff, and should have run lower air pressure in the tires. I was afraid of pinch flats on the cattle grates, but I was able to wheelie or hop the bike over most of them. After the race, one of the more experienced riders suggested 35# in the front and 40# in the back; I was running 45# in both of the Schwalbe Dureme 700cX40. I am looking forward to trying the Half Pint (111 miles) again next year, but I doubt if I will ever do the 200. After 8 hours of gravel, wind, hills, heat, and sun, I am ready to get off of the bike. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-JlyB_Hn0W2E/U40w_8fY_OI/ACk/U43mvfA3SuQ/s1600/DK_1225-%28ZF-0500-46390-1-001%29.jpg I love this bike and really love passing guys half my age on carbon fiber 'cross bikes... -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Chris, I would guestimate 25% of the bikes had MTB bars. Most of the bicycles were 'cross bikes and Salsa Vaya, Fargo, or Warbird. There were several x-country type MTB, some hybrids, a few fat bikes, off-road tandems, and regular road bikes. Jim M., A lot of the serious gravel racers that I know run tubeless. They tell me that they can run lower tire pressures and not have to worry about pinching the tube when they hit something harsh. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Tony: Congrats on a great ride. I'm a firm believer my Atlantis can do things I shouldn't be doing anyway so is the perfect bike for my needs. Sounds like yours is close to standard Riv spec you enjoyed the ride didn't suffer for lack of equipment. Good to hear confirmation that lower pressure chubby tires can survive sharp gravel. I love 40mm tires but haven't tried below 50 psi. The 35f/40r suggestion is worth a try. dougP On Tuesday, June 3, 2014 2:29:35 PM UTC-7, Tony McG wrote: Chris, I would guestimate 25% of the bikes had MTB bars. very cool Tony. Sounds like you had a good time. I would also suggest a more supple tire like the Clement MSO next time, the Duremes are bombproof but make the ride a little too rough I think. ~mike Carlsbad Ca. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. That is just so awesome, Tony. I am quite the fan of the homegrown gravel race/ride scene. I think it's a really healthy infusion of sensibility into bike culture. Cheers, David it isn't a contest. HA - good one! I forgot to mention one snide remark from a fellow asking where my racks, bags, and panniers were. Pretty sure I kicked his ass. I also meant to point out in my original post that I'm NOT a racer. Don't have the knack for it, not good at it, don't really enjoy it, haven't really raced anything since college days more than two decades ago. I much prefer to just ride, but I'm also not totally averse to riding hard once in awhile. And this mixed surface course was pretty fun to ride. This event is a bit different, though. I think one of the S2S slogans is more than just a race. As you can sense from the pics, it was a fun boys weekend - hanging out, joking and laughing with a bunch of colleagues as another school year draws to a close. The top teams recruit racers from all over the world, and they get national, olympic, and worlds caliber athletes (thus the S2S nickname Bellingham Olympics.) Those teams finish hours ahead of us. My team is mostly 40ish guys in better than average (USA) shape, that somehow find the whole event (weekend) fun. One guy is a triathlete, but I think he's the only racer in the bunch. Still, we finished 144th out of nearly 500 teams - many of those teams finished hours behind us (and they had fun, too.) I think these sorts of events are becoming more popular, and they are pretty laid back and fun. So if you get an invite - consider it.
