[RBW] Re: Indexing Schmindexing!
I have a set of those Simplex shifters, and will gladly sell them along to anyone who might be interested (along with the Silver stem mount where they currently reside, if you'd like). They're the most beautiful downtubers ever, but I think Silvers shift better. JB On Saturday, June 21, 2014 4:40:43 PM UTC-7, Matthew J wrote: This time it is great. I prefer friction. Maybe because it's what I cut my teeth on but to me it's simple, feels good and the end results are the same. Joes spot on on this, the Riv shifters are smoth. Ratchet or not, I'll take friction. But that's just me. On Saturday, June 21, 2014 11:58:51 AM UTC-5, Tim wrote: I've been fighting with the shifting on my Hilsen for months now. I'm admittedly not the best mechanic in the world but I built up my girlfriend's Sam and it shifted just fine, even after switching out Mustache bars w/bar ends to Albatross w/thumbies. I built my Hunqapillar up with less than stellar shifting. So last spring I put on a new chain, cassette, chain rings, and cables. It's never really been great since. It slipped and skipped, especially in the lower gears (which, of course, made it really inconvenient when climbing steep stuff.) I changed cables again recently with the same middling results. It wasn't unrideable but it was pretty annoying. I have my first 400k coming up next Saturday, so last night I started from scratch. I loosened the rear derailer cable (the front has always been fine) and used Sheldon Brown's method of setting up on the third smallest cog and getting the cable snug, with both barrel adjusters one full turn back from all the way tightened. I went on a 75 mile, hilly route today with similar results. It was a wee bit better but it still jumped around, mostly in the lowest gears on both the middle and small chainrings. I tried going both ways with the barrel adjusters to no avail. I would shift a notch but still have to try and trim a half notch or so to get it right. So finally I stopped and took the shifter out of index mode and into friction mode. Viola! It shifted like butter! What a wonderful relief. I had tried index mode once before but only briefly. This time it is great. I'm not sure if the indexing is wearing out on the shifter or what. I would tend to suspect my not so great mechanic ability, but the great thing is, it doesn't matter. Re: [RBW] Re: Indexing Schmindexing!
FWIW, after using Simplex Retrofrictions on the new 9 speed Dura Ace 74XX drivetrain on the Ram for a couple of months, and after having used Silvers (bar end) for several years on the Fargo, both 7 and, for 18 months or so, 9, I have to agree that I find the Silvers more precise and easier to use with 9 speeds. I have to agree that I find the Silvers more precise and easier to use with 9 speeds. That may explain our different experiences. The largest rear cluster I've ever had is 7. Have never had a triple crank. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Have you checked rear derailleur hanger alignment? This might be the problem with indexing. Otherwise friction isn't that bad. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Indexing Schmindexing!
If you like Shimano index, you'll *love* Silver Power Ratchet. That sorta-clicky thing it does when you pull back/up on the shifter somehow magically gets you to the next cog with almost no trimming. Ride that for a while then hop on an index bike, and you'll feel like you're shifting by hitting the derailer with a hammer. I still like and use both, but Silvers are swell. Joe Bernard Vallejo, CA. I had pretty much the same experience with the tandem. shimano BEs After replacing the rear derailler and chain it would hang up in the middle gears and then jump two cogs. After a few rides and much tinkering I switched to friction and rarely miss a gear. Much faster now too.
