Re: [RBW] Re: More jewelry from Nitto

2014-06-05 Thread Matthew J
The problem with nylon, or using the King / Nitto without straps as a fancy
half clip, is the rider can flatten rather than get the foot into them when
accelerating from a stand still such as from a traffic signal.

The BG half clips especially paired with White platforms but also on such
diverse pedals as vintage Campy Record Stradas and MKS RX-1 is so natural.
Perhaps half clips not optimal for pure speed or beach cruising. I find
them very good for touring. They hold the foot in place well enough on
long stretches but allow me to quickly get my foot down when stopping with
a loaded bike.

Sure, could do the same clipless. But clipless means bringing a second
pair of shoes for off bike portion of my tours, something I really do not
like doing. Walking shoes take up too much space in the panniers for me.

I rode toeclips for 15+ years and I don't have problems with flattening the
cage. So I think it's a matter of what you are accustomed to and
proficient with. I see people struggling to get into clip-ins all the
time, so I don't think it's that different.

I still ride toeclips on my tandem. I like to wear normal shoes and
toeclips are the best way to ride with what you brung, if you want to be
attached to the pedals.

The rest of the time, I do ride flat pedals because I don't think I am
losing that much by not being attached to the pedals. Most of the time I
am able to keep up with all but the fastest rando riders on the long
distance rides I do. If I am not able to keep up with the medium pace
group, the foot/pedal interface has never been the problem. It's usually
not having had slept enough, eaten enough, drank enough, or something else
going wrong with the engine.

My reference above is to using the nylon and King / new Nitto style without
straps. In my experience the straps themselves provide an assist to
getting into the pedal. Even with fairly thick shoes and socks the rider
can tell almost instantaneously whether properly in the cage or not.

Riding half clip without straps you really do not feel the clip until
putting full weight on the pedal. When hurrying from a traffic light on
crowded streets that can result in misplaced feet squishing the half clip.
At least for me this never happens with the BG half clips.

Maybe I just don't get how capitalism works, but the way I understand it is if
you make a commodity and supply is outpaced by demand then other suppliers
enter the market and stimulate competition. You can either increase production
and compete on volume or raise your prices and hope that your brand is
stronger. Novel ideas are awatded patents. You can't whinge that somebody
copied your idea that was a copy of sombody else's in the first place. If
competition isn't youre thing get a patent or consider setting up shop in North
Korea. I hear there's a brisk market for custom touring bikes there.

My take as well. Convert the linked price in pounds to dollars the savings
on the MKS version is not all that much. Benefits working directly with a

[RBW] Re: More jewelry from Nitto

2014-06-04 Thread Mike Schiller
... for most of the cycling world the toe clip is long dead. Either ride
flats or clip in.

Now that tire ... one of the best designs ever and still used by a wide
variety of riders. ( not just retro-grouches)

Either ride flats or clip in.

Says you.

I am a huge fan of Bruce Gordon half clips. They are on all of my bikes.

Re: [RBW] Re: More jewelry from Nitto

2014-06-04 Thread Ron Mc
I think the BG half-clips really look fine, but my daughter rides
half-clips on one bike and hers are nylon, we both ride Ale's on our
go-fast bikes, and I ride Grip Kings on my utility bike. Maybe one day
I'll have the bike for them.
