[RBW] Re: New to me Roadeo

2018-07-27 Thread JohnS
Thank you Eamon, Patrick and RichS, I feel very fortunate to own it!

RichS, I have three bikes set up with Mustache bars, so I clearly fall into
the love 'em bucket, something about the different hand positions work for
me compared to drops. I'll post a pic when I make the conversion. Waiting
on long shift cables from Riv before I get started.

Well the Roadeo does have room for fenders and has eyelets for them, so I
probably will. I did this ride two years ago and completed just before it
down poured. I was lucky.

Any bike I bring to the Covered Bridge Classic will have fenders. While
the ride is no Seagull Century of TOSRV in terms of how often it rains
during the ride, it's rained a number of times that I've done it and as
you point out, horse droppings on the road make for some nasty splashes.

The Hillborne won my heart with its reliability and robustness. I

The Roadeo, on the other hand, has awoken the part of me that loves the
tactile experience of cycling and being at one with a bicycle. It throws
the sensibility of racks and bags and a kickstand out the window. It
instead rewards with responsiveness to pedal and steering inputs that is
both sensual and sensational, and really brings out the joy of riding in a
puritanical way. It is very pleasurable to ride, even if wearing a

with strength and purpose on it. I had thought this type of riding was no
longer for me, but the Roadeo suggests otherwise!

I will still put on fenders and the Bagman support with the Carradice
Nelson when they arrive in the mail though, and hope they don't affect the
character of the Roadeo too much. If I still lived in Chiang Mai or a
 place
with some dirtish rides or possibilities of camping, I'd build the
Hillborne again in a heartbeat, because Sam is perfect in those
 situations.
In Singapore though, it is either mingling with the road traffic or
aggressive XC trail, so having just the Roadeo and my hardtail mtb fit the
 bill well.

How the Roadeo compares to a Lyon or Boulder though, not something I
 might ever know!

I love the Sam on off roady tires and had 40c marathon extremes on it for a
long time, taking it out on many trails in Chiang Mai with those tires...
however I also managed to break the HT/TT lug joint doing so! Later on I
got a Soulcraft Option 3 (pic ) and riding trail
is much more fun on that, while still having some BoBish qualities in the
build.

I expect that later down the road I will put the bosco bars on it with
every racks and baskets on every boss possible and have the most useful
bike in the world again.

Added some pics of the Roadeo to this album .

Congrats on the new ride. The Hillborne is a lot fun if you put 45c Smart Sams

If my stable were limited to a Roadeo and a Sam Hillborne, I'd happily keep
and ride both. Set up the Roadeo as a gofast only bike, and keep the Sam as
a loaded commuter/errand bike with tires fat enough for at least firm dirt
and gravel. (How fat a tire will your Sam take, anyway?)

Puhleeze! Don't put a kickstand on your Roadeo!

I can attest to the lovely ride of Compass 32mm extra-lights; I have them
on my Riv road and they're excellent tiresbut probably not the best
choice for commuting. In 2016 I also tried the McClure Pass tires...26.. X
1.5. They look similar to Paselas ; they are lighter and more supple , but
I had 2 or 3 flats with them on my X0-1 last summer. Tradeoff when you're

[RBW] Re: New (to-me) Roadeo!

2017-01-08 Thread Paul Y
Thanks for all your comments. I am indeed loving this bike even more after
a few days of commuting on it and a couple of recreational rides, I don't
feel the need to have both this and the Hillborne in the stable, so I will
probably put the Hillborne frame up on the wall and appreciate that I have
a great backup if needed.

The Hillborne won my heart with its reliability and robustness. I marvelled
at how I could ride it on trail yet join club rides when necessary, then
shop for groceries on the way home. While I'd never complain about its ride
and handling, I couldn't say I really enjoyed it either. With the Hillborne
I loved the maturity and sensibility of design. The Roadeo, on the other
hand, has awoken the part of me that loves the tactile experience of
cycling and being at one with a bicycle. It throws the sensibility of racks
and bags and a kickstand out the window. It instead rewards with
responsiveness to pedal and steering inputs that is both sensual and
sensational, and really brings out the joy of riding in a puritanical way.
It is very pleasurable to ride, even if wearing a backpack with a hefty
lock and change of clothes, one feels like an athlete, moving with strength
and purpose on it. I had thought this type of riding was no longer for me,
but the Roadeo suggests otherwise!

I will still put on fenders and the Bagman support with the Carradice
Nelson when they arrive in the mail though, and hope they don't affect the
character of the Roadeo too much. If I still lived in Chiang Mai or a place
with some dirtish rides or possibilities of camping, I'd build the
Hillborne again in a heartbeat, because Sam is perfect in those situations.
In Singapore though, it is either mingling with the road traffic or
aggressive XC trail, so having just the Roadeo and my hardtail mtb fit the
bill well.

How the Roadeo compares to a Lyon or Boulder though, not something I might
ever know!

Paul, you'll enjoy the Roadeo. It's just a lovely bike, light and
comfortable as can be.

I have a 61 in that same grey/burgundy color scheme, and it's one of my
favorite bikes - I drag it all over the place:

Nice Roadeo

Surely you're not ditching the Sam? But sounds like you may be...

I get that you are using the Roadeo as a brevet bikeso fenders,
lighting and luggage carrying ability is important...I'd still keep Sam for
commuting though, then you would have the best of both worlds

Re: [RBW] Re: New (to-me) Roadeo!

2017-01-03 Thread lum gim fong
Congrats on the new bike! I am also looking for a lighter snappier bike like a
Rodeo or Boulder bike.

If I got a rodeo I would ask them to put on rack hanger barrels on the fork
though.
They allow the option now I think. But that's buying new.

Last July I traded my Sam frame for a Rambouillet frame and it is a much
snappier lively ride than my Sam or Bleriot. I think the rodeo has a little
thinner tubing than the Rambouillet so that should be even snappier.
