Re: [RBW] Re: New bike siting: Cheviut/Cheviot/Chevrolet?
Just finished building up my Cheviot. Its a fantastic bike, smooth ride. Wheelbase is longer than the Hillborne and bars can be even highe. Altogether luscious. One surprise however - - not shown in any Rivendell photos. The decal on the left side of the bike says Cheviut not Cheviot. When asked about this, GP he says he did it to prevent people from giving the bike a French pronunciation. Claims this happens a lot. Personally I love the bike and find the phonetic decal amusing. Francophakes who walk into their LBS asking for a "Jion" are not dissuaded by a decal that says Giant and would not change affectations for an extra T at the end. These folks will now see Cheviut and ask for a "Shevioot" (except they won't see it, since Riv does not picture "Cheviut" in ANY photos. BTW, what if francopretenders don't always approach the bike on its left?) Funny thing, but my Rambouillet decal did not say RambooYay in the left side, nor did I once long for a phonetic spelling as people tortured the pronunciation of its name. Bottom line: really a great bike and a great name for a bike. The decal is now worth a million laughs, so I'm good. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I rode the 60cm Cheviot yesterday for a short spin (Esteban: I must've just missed you!). The Cheviot was a really nice ride. A bit more stable and steady than my Gomez; due to the longer wheelbase and the engine an inch towards the back design evolution. It's gonna be a great bike. The RBBH shop is pretty special. I love the lugged rope ceiling and the hatchet display, and of course the interesting conversation w/ Keven, Will, and Vince. -nathan On Sun, Jan 5, 2014 at 11:05 AM, Esteban proto...@gmail.com wrote: 50cm version in RBBH: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25671211@N02/11781162905/ On Friday, January 3, 2014 5:25:59 PM UTC-8, Don Compton wrote: I was lucky to ride an Appaloosa at Riv HQ and, for me, the handling was so similar to my Roadeo, even though the grips on the bars were so far behind the front wheel. Re: [RBW] Re: New bike siting: Cheviut/Cheviot/Chevrolet?
Nathan, everything you wrote was exactly my experience at the shop last Thursday. I should have taken a photo of the lug ceiling; it's classic Riv cleverness. The day I was there, the Cheviot had not been moved down to the store yet. That sample with the Bosco bar and sprung saddle is sweet; that seems to be the ideal incarnation of this new bike. There is now a page on the Riv site under Frames devoted to the Cheviot, and this sample is the one shown. It looks great. I didn't test-ride the 60 cm Cheviot that was at Riv Headquarters, which is probably a good thing. -Jim W. On Jan 5, 2014, at 11:21 AM, nathan spindel wrote: The RBBH shop is pretty special. This is with an aluminum fender and the Compass 26x1.75 tire. Nevertheless, I don't consider equidistant bridges (albeit with excess space) to be misplaced. Nor do I. Maybe it's because of all the extra padding on my person, or maybe it's because of my bum knees, but I can't step through the Betty Foy frame. (After all, consider the whole zip-tie the fenders on thing...) I haven't paid too much attention to this parameter on other Rivendells, but at least on my two (including one Atlantis), the bridges were equidistant to the dropout. Particularly on the Atlantis, there is so much built-in space around the wheels that I had to use 25mm standoffs on both seat stay and chain stay bridges to get a good fender line. This is with an aluminum fender and the Compass 26x1.75 tire. Nevertheless, I don't consider equidistant bridges (albeit with excess space) to be misplaced. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Not sure if anyone has pointed this out, but the orange/blue was in the first run of the Hillbornes (I have one downstairs). This bike is a flatter orange instead of pearl, but i like the combo--in fact thats why i have blue hb tape on mine! i like the small details like the two spellings on either side. the blue fill of the heart, not so much, but it's hard to top the betty foy. i'm not sure that it's necc. to have an alternative to the betty foy, it seemed like that bike had plenty of cross-over between men and women. and they could've just used a different color on the next run or do the same thing with the decals (like a siamese twin, different names on either side). so waiting to hear from grant what this bike offers over the betty foy beyond aesthetics. too bad about the orange for me, but it's been a few run of bikes in the blues and greens so i guess it's due in the rotation. Re: [RBW] Re: New bike siting: Cheviut/Cheviot/Chevrolet?
I think the new Mixte will be a winner, for riders and for RBW. The longer chainstays fit in with the unracer mindset, and the color is fantastic - no one does Orange like Rivendell. RBW gets to retain the lugs they've already invested in, which can't hurt. Re: [RBW] Re: New bike siting: Cheviut/Cheviot/Chevrolet?
Is that Grant's thumbprint as a background? Italian pen maker Krone had a limited edition Lincoln pen which included a bit of the dead president's DNA in a hair-strand encapsulated in the cap assembly. Maybe that's a precedent? With Cheviot coming, something else will be going, which is very Riv-ish other than for Atlantis 2. If you see something you like, BUY IT because it may not be there. In just a few years, that discontinued whatever will become the stuff of lore and legend with incorrect tubing, paint, production location, or geometry information and lengthy threads about where it belongs on the RBW family tree. I'll have to see the bike before I know if I like it, but I prefer the lamb I have to the lamb I don't, headbadge-wise. YMMV.
