[RBW] Re: New to me Atlantis
Tony, my recallection of those hollow, plastic lowest-end SIS thumb shifters is their palpable flex when being shifted. My mind knew I moved them enough, but my ears and feet telling me it has't happened yet. I would have volunteered a set of NOS XC Expert thumb shifters to the purp-aluki to improve the experience, albeit in friction mode. They would be a tactile improvement as will the Paul's Thumbies. [RBW] Re: New to me Atlantis
Tony, I considered the thumbies and the stem shifter approach together. When Bill posted his stem shifter photo in the other thread, it nudged me in that direction and the order was placed. The other factor is when I installed my SA three speed shifter on the stem of my Quickbeam, I liked it quite a bit. So stem shifting is the first round, and thumbies are a backup plan. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: New to me Atlantis
Andy - Thanks for the thought on the NOS XC Expert shifters, I'm sure they would improve the experience a ton. I was willing to use those cheapie SIS's because I knew it was temporary but I'll start messing around with it again after Christmas. Chris - Sounds great, I picked up on the stem shifting thread after my last post. I definitely like how stem shifters minimize the cable run and open up the bars. I wish I like downtube shifters like you have on the Saluki but I can't get used to the reach down that far. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: New to me Atlantis
Chris I admire your commitment to the single handlebar, I wish I could get myself to agree on one! For shifters have you thought about thumbies? I did a pair of thumbies on my GAP trip w/ the purple-luki and liked it pretty well. I mounted them close to the stem. Granted I didn't shift a whole lot and the particular SIS thumbies I used are pretty unappealing but it is a configuration I'd consider again. It did minimize the shifter cable run if that matters to you. Picture below. When I reconstitute the Saluki I'm leaning towards albatross with 1x8 so a right hand paul thumbie mounted silver shifter in the conventional (close to the hand grip) location. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fNQeLeAcgSQ/VHVWN2cm4lI/F6o/R0zCW87_4oM/s1600/DSC_3466.jpg -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Thanks, gents, for the encouragement. Philip, I wish I would have asked you BEFORE I ordered new parts. In fact, the day after ordering I come here to find others offering bits I needed. If only I could have been more patient. In the meantime, I'm back to obsessing over shifter configuration. I'm leaning toward bar ends, but my usual downtube orientation would be cleaner. [RBW] Re: New to me Atlantis
I love the simple look of that bike. Pedals and cables will add to the functionality, I guess, but it won't be as sleek. I really do love the look of the single top tube, horizontal, with bars at seat height. It is what so many of us grew up looking at, I guess. Not too much seat post or stem, either. I remember reading Grant once saying something about the distance from the front tire to the dt should be the same as the rear tire to the st. Symmetry is beauty, in the eye of many beholders, me included. I know of the functionality of longer chain stays on Riv's newer bikes, but you lose that one little detail. Post more once you clutter it up with cranks and whatnot. Edwin -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Congrats Chris! You just can't beat the look of an Atlantis. And I like how it sits on those fat 26er's too. So what's the handlebar plan for the Riv-threesome now? I think that I remember you dallied with some noodles on the AHH earlier this year. I have a similar situation between my single speed XO-3, Saluki and Bombadil... Right now I have Alba-XO3, nothing on the Saluki, super wide 48cm noodles on the Bombadil. I think I could be very happy going Alba's all the way across to be honest and just have a set of noodles on standby to swap out when required but I'm not sure. I expect to leave things as is till the Saluki comes back on line (the fork is in, probably going to wait till after Christmas shopping is done to get it coated though). Glad you're enjoying your new ride. One of the fun things about the Atlantis is going to the gallery seeing all the variations.
