[RBW] Re: Nice Try, Assholes!

2020-04-06 Thread Jason Fuller
I live in a high bike-theft city, so choosing an extra sturdy rack,
checking it that it's in good shape, making sure to lock to the right part
of the rack, using two locks (and going around at least one wheel) is just
part of normal lock-up. I also always try to lock up in front of a cafe or
somewhere there'll be an idle audience (and potential that me, the owner,
is keeping an eye) versus somewhere secluded where there are less
witnesses. Also, ensuring said place will be open until I get back to my
bike is key.

I cannot bring myself to lock up the Hillborne out of sight for any length
of time, but I do use the Clem as a lockup bike as long as it's not a
particularly rough area. I use my old Raleigh Twenty for parking in bad
areas of town or for extended periods.

I'm a fan of using a Krytonite U-lock from top tube or down tube to rack,
and then a Abus link lock around the seat tube, rear wheel, and bike rack.
I also have Pin Head wheel locks as well as little press-in inserts in my
seat and stem bolts (forget the brand)

Ball peen.

Hammer the end of the threaded stub into a rivet retaining the nut, bike
rack, locks and bike. Three accurate strikes of a fair sized one should do.

Caulk and similar goop is easily removed, oftentimes by merely backing the
nut out. What is needed are tamper-resistant nuts/bolts. Or weld the darn
things onto the rack; it's not as if these racks get moved often.

I used to see this in the Bay Area sometimes, store owners/ public works would
put some type of heavy glue/ caulk/ rubber cement on the top of threads on top
of the nut to keep it in a fixed place and it seemed to be a pretty good
deterrent.

Maybe we could use the subject line to give a hint as to what the post will

I tell my ten-year-old, cursing, most of the time, is just lazy; think of a
more creative way to express yourself! (Unless the wrench slips when you're

course, where cursing is creative. It's often in reference to itself, like

[RBW] Re: Nice Try, Assholes!

2020-04-02 Thread Bill Lindsay
If the rack can be disassembled with a wrench then there is no benefit to
pre-loosening the bolts. Even if they are tight, the thief can still
disassemble it with a wrench after you park your bike.

In fact leaving it tight is better for the thief because you won’t notice that
it’s easy to take apart the rack

Obviously these guys planned ahead. Probably set up more bike racks in the
area the same way. Sheesh, one more thing to check before leaving your
bike.
