[RBW] Re: Orr Springs Road, Mendocino County
But don't look at a map and say, Oh Fish Rock road looks like a good way to get over to Hwy 128 from the coast, unless you are prepared for one of the hardest unpaved steep up-and-down days of riding ever. I had a bad map and didn't realize it would be dirt. It turned out to be a very good day to be on an XO-1. Atlantis would be even better. If I ever try that again, I'll know what I'm in for and bring enough food and water. Unfortunately, my friend was on a more traditional road bike, RB-1 with stock gearing. That was tough, but he was studly and road all of it. I was using 24x28 all day. Crashing at the motel in Cloverdale concluded this day of riding. -Jim On May 2, 2009, at 9:02 AM, franklyn wrote: Beth, Mendocino is one of the nicest place to ride. You can start from Mendocino proper. Go out of town and go inland on Ukiah Comptche Road. Take that all the way to Comptche. Take Flynn Creek Road toward HWY 128. Come back to HWY 1 on HWY 128, then ride up the coast back up to Mendocino. $40 miles of road bike heaven--decent pavement, redwood forest, awesome coast view, rollers and moderate hills. Another option is to start in Mendocino. Go up north on HWY 1 to Fort Bragg (8 miles one way). There is an abandoned rail road bridge that got converted into a pedestrian bridge. That is beginning of a 3-4 mile beach front trails that take you out of Fort Bragg. Once you are off the trail, continue on HWY 1 north. You can go as far as you can toward Westport. About 5 mile out of Fort Bragg there is a great beach to hang out. From Fort Bragg to Westport is 20 miles. I can post bikely route later. Franklyn et. al.- Interesting area. I'd like to loop Orr Springs with Low Gap but after having looked - it may be a bit ambitious given that it totals 45 miles and 6500' of climbing. Out on dirt, back on pavement? Is Running Springs Ranch Road a public road? Is it paved? Are there any other loops in the area that offer dirt or dirt/pave combinations? For people interested in this area, I recommend that you find Lonely Planet's Cycling The West Coast. I used it to learn some good rides down in Sonoma County. I've read in that book about a loop that included Ukiah, but haven't had a chance to do it yet. It's a good book for getting ideas, because the writers have ridden on only some of the really good roads. Others are waiting to be explored. The book is really good for the Solvang area down south also. -Jim -Original Message- From: Eric Norris campyonly...@me.com Sent: May 1, 2009 6:57 PM To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: [RBW] Re: Orr Springs Road, Mendocino County An interesting and challenging route would be to start in Ukiah and head out Orr Springs to the coast, then down past Mendocino and Albion to Hwy 128. [RBW] Re: Orr Springs Road, Mendocino County
I have done some cycling in the area. I have done the out-and-back from Ukiah to Mendocino on Orr Springs Road/Ukiah-Comptche Road. I have also ridden Mountain View Road from Booneville to Manchester (just down the coast). Highway 128 is OK, but has moderate level of car traffic, especially on weekends. The Orr Springs/Low Gap road loop is cool. I know it's a lot of climbing. I'd recommend going out on Low Gap in the morning, then loop back on Orr Springs in the afternoon. The eastward climb to Ukiah is slightly gentler and more covered (only slightly) than the westward one. I will be going out there over memorial weekend, and then again in July, to train for the Shasta Summit Super century.
