[RBW] Re: Ottolock Initial Reviews???
I purchased one from the fine folks at Rivendell shortly after I made the initial post. Over the last week or so I have used it daily. *Things I like (:* 1. It is light weight! 2. Seemingly better than a cable lock or a intricately wrapped and tied Johns Irish Strap 3. I like that it is small and fits into my bag or on the bars. 4. 30" of lock has been adequate for locking both the rear wheel and frame around typical u-lockable pole shaped objects. When I use a U-lock for the rear wheel, 30" has been more than adequate for locking the front wheel to the frame. *Things I don't like ): * 1. Ergonomics. I feel like the button is on the wrong side when pulling the strap through the lock.I feel a little like i have to contort my body to lock the lock, I think this is just from me not being completely familiar with the lock. 2. The squishy silicon strap doohickey that keeps the lock wrapped on itself. I got rid of it immediately. I just double coil the strap and lock it. *Words of caution:* I did manage to replicate the failure people had where the strap will pull through the lock, even after the combination has been changed. I did this by inserting the strap with the correct combination then stopping in between ratchets. It was repeatable but required some care to achieve. I discovered it shortly after locking it onto itself. From that point, I have always pull tested the lock before leaving. Overall, walking away after locking my bike with the Ottolock does not leave me warm and fuzzy like a quality U-lock. However, I feel the security of Ottolock does allow for what it is designed for which is quick trip inside the store. It should prevent anyone with a pair of bolt cutters or snips from quickly grabbing your bike and riding off. Thanks everyone for your input! Hey Christian, I've got a 30" that I've been using for a couple of months now, and I like it just fine. Long enough to wrap around a post, rear wheel and seat tube, and I cinch it up nice a tight (per the instructions). It's super light for a lock and I really only trust it for quick stops. I watched the video posted by tc and cannot relate to the videomaker's experience as my lock seems tight and solid when locked. For more heavy-duty security I use an ABUS U-lock mini 40; not as light as the Ottolock, but pretty compact and seemingly bombproof. I like mine! So small and light, perfect for its intend purpose. We can lock up 2 bikes w/ the 30 no problem. 3 bikes if you pile and don't lock to anything. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. I got one from the kickstarter. After a while, it started stick when unlocking. They sent me a new one for free, and itb has been working fine. I wish the dials were bigger and less finicky for my big fingers. Jon Ellicott city, MD -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Ottolock Initial Reviews???
I bought a 30" Ottolock pretty much as soon as I saw them available mailorder. My first one was replaced quickly and easily by Ottolock, because the default combo didn't work and it was impossible to set a new combo. The replacement has been flawless so far, though I haven't used it a ton. Even if it provides only modest security the combination of light weight, small size and ease of use makes it a winner in my mind. BTW, for me the Ottolock replaced a luggage lock and seat-leash cable combo, which is far less secure and more fiddily to use, though lighter. WRT the linked video ... I do think Ottolock has (or at least had) a QC issue and feel for the guy who got 2 apparently defective replacements. I'm very unconvinced by his shim pick test though, since he did the test on a defective lock where the pawl wasn't engaging the toothed strap. The fact that he was able to slide his defective lock open even without the shim makes me wonder how difficult we should have expected it to be to slip a shim between the unengaged pawl and the toothed strap. I wish he would have asked Ottolock to send him a lock they had tested as working properly when he asked for a replacement. That's what I did and they were very helpful and quick about providing my warranty replacemnent, even paying for all the shipping charges. -Jack K. I was going to order one, seems like a great idea and worthwhile lock when they get the bugs out. But I'm not sold yet for anything longer than a 5 min lockup period. [RBW] Re: Ottolock Initial Reviews???
i have a newer one. i got the extra short one just to be ultra-minimal and light. this is great for locking up your bike for sub-5min jaunts to the liquor store in a nice neighborhood, or supplemental to a fat U lock as a front wheel or saddle lock. i just met someone who has one who someone tried to cut through and it didnt work (they were unable to cut through it quickly). this is a good sign that a bolt cutter is probably not enough, but i'd still use caution. [RBW] Re: Ottolock Initial Reviews???
I use Ottolocks and like them. I have several, short and long. Generally the short works fine for me with a single bike and locking to a rack or thin pole. Longer for multiple bikes and/or bigger poles. I don't know how easy they are to defeat -- I view them as a theft deterrent, not prevention. I have significantly more substantial locks for use when needed. Even with a good lock, I will often use the Otto to lock a wheel or just a second lock and added bit of deterrent.
