[RBW] Re: Quick & cheap solution to clear the front derailleur clamp to mount a bottle cage

2018-04-08 Thread Dave Johnston
I use presta tube nuts or Aluminum spacers I get in the nut and bolt
section of True Value Hardware. My local true value has stainless steel cap
screws in M4, M5, M6 sizes in the common bicycle lengths as well. Although
for the load bearing bolts on racks, seatpost, stem you should use
non-stainless of excellent quality for the higher strength.

[RBW] Re: Quick & cheap solution to clear the front derailleur clamp to mount a bottle cage

2018-04-08 Thread ascpgh
I don't know if brass threads are up to the load? The cage is fastened to
the standoff by a screw that cannot extend into the frame braze-on so each
traditional bottle cage connection becomes a chain of two brass to steel
threaded connections.

I'll stick with longer M5 cap bolts and spacer ferrules, like this:

[RBW] Re: Quick & cheap solution to clear the front derailleur clamp to mount a bottle cage

2018-04-06 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
If one really wants to be fancy, one can buy some brass standoffs with M5
male and female threads. I got a handful off eBay
(<- not an endorsement, but a
sample) one time for a few bucks shipped. A small collection of these in
various lengths are quite useful for spacing that perfect fender line, as
well as spacing out that bottle cage. I've been known to grind almost the
entire length, from its hexagonal cross-section to circular (leaving just a
bit to tighten the standoff), and polish the entire thing for effect.
Certainly, these go well with brass ferrules and bells, especially as they
acquire a bit of patina. (*insert Leica brassing fetish comments here*)

Speaking of bottle cages, there are two kinds of design you can buy. I tend
to categorize them into the "Ciussi
"

kind that has a 1-piece attachment, and the "King
" kind that
has a 2-piece attachment. The King cages tend to impose less restriction on
where one can mount the front derailer clamp, especially if said clamp is
thinnish and no clamp shim is used.

Re: [RBW] Re: Quick & cheap solution to clear the front derailleur clamp to mount a bottle cage

2018-04-06 Thread tom coppedge
Valve stem nuts are a great idea! Comparing stem nuts to the M5 washers I
got, I did notice the washers are smaller in both outside and inside
diameter. But, for the Sam's bosses anyway, the inside diameter of the
stem nuts I have are appear to be small enough to still have enough contact
with the flats of the bosses. Thanks everyone.

2018-04-05 Thread Jeffrey Arita
In a pinch one could also use valve stem nuts. Inside diameter is good and
they are decent thickness. Can 'stack' them for rack mounting off-sets at
fork braze-on too.

I've found that a presta valve nut works perfectly as a spacer.
