Re: [RBW] Re: Recommendations for front and rear lights to use with dyno hub

2010-10-27 Thread Rene Sterental
Checked the Spanniga Plateo rear light on my morning commute that starts in
the dark. The light definitely turns on automatically on the Senso mode as
soon as you move the bike and then stays lighted for around 30 seconds or so
once you've stopped. I didn't time it, so it's just a guess. I'll time it
tomorrow.

The Edelux on Senso mode keeps turning on even in bright morning daylight,
so I'm not sure when it won't. So far it seems to me that on the Senso mode,
as soon as I roll the bike the light turns on. Am I missing something?

Nope. I have it on the front of the Nitto Mini rack and the small TurnkSack

As far as I can tell, there is no interference with the light. BTW, where is

Update - I no longer recommend the dyno tail light with the Supernova
E3. It is very finicky and loses the standlight feature easily. So
the Nitto rack again has the PB Superflash mounted. Upside, the Sam
Hillborne looks nicer without the extra wire snaking along the bike.

Really makes me think the Cyo is probably the best deal out there
now. If the E3 hadn't been such a large investment would swap it
out.

Re: [RBW] Re: Recommendations for front and rear lights to use with dyno hub

2010-10-26 Thread Rene Sterental
I just installed on my Atlantis a SON 28 Dyad 36 wheel Rich built for me
with SON Edelux and rode it for the first time today. It wasn't fully dark
so aside from enjoying how good it looks, and the Senso function, I'll have
to wait until it gets ligher later in the mornings and/or darker earlier in
the evenings to fully assess it.

I paired it to a Spanninga Plateo Rack Mount Battery Tail Light that I bough
from Velo Orange that also has the Senso function so even being battery
operated, when the bike is moving (not when it's stopped) and it's starting
to get dark, the tail light also lights up automatically. I have yet to
fully test it to understand for how long it stays lit (if at all) once the
bike stops, but I could assert today that when off, it will turn on when you
roll the bike.

It has a huge reflector and seems to be pretty bright, but it doesn't have a
blinker setting, which I've read is better as blinkers tend to draw the eyes
and where the eyes go the car goes, especially if the driver is impaired by
alcohol. I don't know if that is true, and for extra visibility I also carry
a PB super bright rear light clipped to my Sackville Medium Saddlebag.
Sometimes I set it up to blink, sometimes not...

Anyway, this being my first ever dynamo setting, I'm feeling pretty excited
and will be happy to share my experiences. The front/rear Senso feature is
awesome as it means I don't have to remember to turn the lights on or off,
just go riding... and know that if it starts getting darker they'll turn on
automatically.

We did a 42 mile offroad epic Saturday night (complete with flat tire,

flawless. If money is no barrier, that's a great light indeed... But
for my second bike I may try the IQ Cyo on Patrick's recommendation.

I have a 4D tail light that I haven't set up... the battery lights
work so well, they're inexpensive, the batteries last a long time, and
NO WIRING... amen.

I agree. I have the Radbot (as well as several SuperFlashes), and I would find

Carry a couple of extra AAA batteries in your bag and you'll have more than

I have one made by an Australian company called PedalPower, which I got from
Peter White. Used it to keep my iPhone charged on a camping tour (on my

could use the phone as a GPS, by day, and make calls at night. It's quite

It's easy to justify-- many front headlights are designed to be run
with a rear headlight. If you don't run the rear headlight, the front
headlight burns out faster. And those front headlights are expensive!

2010-10-19 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
I think LEDs have such long lives, this doesn't end up being meaningful -- or
so Peter White intimates on his lighting pages. But that being said, I run
wired taillights on my dynamo bikes, and the wires seem unobtrusive and
unobjectionable (to me). I do supplement with a battery blinkie, or the
DiNotte (BRIGHT!!!) 400 taillight.

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for front and rear lights to use with dyno hub

2010-10-19 Thread EricP
My Sam Hillborne has a Supernova E3. Very bright, although less
focused that the IQ Cyo (which is on a non-Riv bike). The E3 from my
experience does need the specific wired tail light to work best.

For bang for the buck, the Cyo is my favorite. Although it does get
smacked around easily by things such as cables. (Crown mounted, no
more discussion as it is a non-Rivendell bike).

Two of my bikes have wired tail lights. They are convenient. But I
still do not feel confident. So a blinky is usually carried as well.

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for front and rear lights to use with dyno hub

2010-10-19 Thread Oliver S.
The Seculite Plus rear light is around ~$25. Why not hook it up if
you've invested in the hub and will buy a (more expensive) front
light? It is such a joy to not have to do anything when locking your
bike or heading out at night. Supplement it with a battery-powered
light if you want, but having both lights wired, mounted, and ready to
go at any time is great.

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for front and rear lights to use with dyno hub

2010-10-19 Thread amoll68
I have the Edelux on two bikes, and think it's worth every penny. I
also have the IQ Cyo on another bike, and it's functionally quite
similar, but isn't as elegant. The BM Seculite is my favorite
currently available fender mounted tail-light - and it has a built in
red reflector to comply with many state laws.

Here's a pic:

I also supplement with flashers, front and rear, and have a helmet
mounted headlight. I'm pretty sure I'm more visible at night, than I
am during the day.
