Re: [RBW] Re: Repainted and rebuilt low trail Hunqapillar
My question for you is on the shimmy... are you talking about a shimmy freehanded or a real shimmy. I only ask as of all our bikes none have every shimmied and we throw a wide mix of loads at them .. 61cm atlantis, 64 Bombadil especially... On my AHH and Ram depending on how I load them I am able to get a shimmy free handed at speed that quickly goes away as one slides a knee to the top tube. Or wind conditions... but I have NEVER had any type of shimmy withe a hand on the bar or even a high speed thing on fast descents. Anyway just curious ... The repaint and such looks great!!! My Bombadil is on the way home from paint so will be touring next week on the AHH .. good test come to think of it as I just put the tubus lowriders on the front. Later Kelly On Tuesday, April 2, 2013 4:55:59 PM UTC-5, René wrote: Well, I love how the low trail forks have improved the way both the Atlantis and the Hunapillar ride, especially when carrying a load on the front. That being said, I'll add that if riding the bike unloaded, the subjectivity of which geometry handles better is totally up to the rider. I fell in love and was completely won over to the Riv bikes when I first rode my Hilsen, which still retains its original fork. Before the repaint, I place a Pass Stow rack on the Hunqapillar with a Swift bag made specially to fit it. With its high load, I hated how the front wheel flopped terribly when the bike was stopped or on its dual kickstand, but also discovered that as soon as you started riding, the front load's effects completely disappeared. It was magical compared to riding it with the original fork and a similar front load (Platrack + PlatSack). Not that you couldn't ride it or get used to it, but they difference is felt more clearly and positively with a front load. After the repaint, I installed the Tubus Nova lowrider with a pair of Ostrich panniers and loaded them with the similar commute load I was using. The difference in how the low front load feels compared to the front high load is amazing. The steering is fantastic, as it was before, but with the low load the front wheel flop when stopped or on the kickstand has virtually disappeared. This combination makes riding the Hunqapillar with the low front load absolutely amazing. I have to try how the bike feels with a rear load only as well as combined with the front load. While I doubt that I'll ride it with just a rear load, I was getting shimmy with the original fork, especially with a rear load on my large SaddleSack. I haven't had any shimmy on either the Atlantis or the Hunqapillar so far with any of the loads I've used, which is very nice. On the Atlantis I would also get the shimmy with no loads. I haven't done any specific geometry measurements, but both bikes have low trail forks with the rake set at 70mm which gives roughly a 40mm trail. The difference is that I use 50mm tires on the Hunqapillar and 40mm tires on the Atlantis. For comparison, the stock Atlantis 61 has a rake of 45mm, the stock Hunqapillar 58 has a rake of 50mm and very telling (at least to me) the Betty Foy 58 has a rake of 55mm. The combination of the Betty's higher trail with the 650b tires make it the lowest trail stock Rivendell bike (among the ones I have) and I've often wondered if that isn't one of the qualities that make it so much fun to ride. Since I'm not planning (for now) to use front loads on the Betty, I don't really think I'll ever get a lower trail fork for it. It handles magically as it is now. Regarding the Hilsen, I'm still undecided as I like riding it with drop bars and a front Acorn Rando bag, but it's the one I ride the least right now. Another fellow from the list came down to Palo Alto with his 61 Atlantis and front load configuration as he wanted to get a first hand experience in the differences between the stock and low trail Atlantis with his load. We met and he rode both bicycles and although his had Albatross bars and mine had the GB Randonneur bars, he went home as undecided as he had come. I have no idea if he'll be ordering a low trail fork for his Atlantis or not, my point is that preferences are going to be totally subjective. Kelly, I was referring primarily to no-handed shimmy, but since I don't ride no-handed, it's shimmy that I noticed primarily when going on downhill slopes at more speed. I could control it but still felt it; fully established when riding no-handed. Nothing of the sort on both bikes as currently configured. Post pictures of your repainted Bombadil! Re: [RBW] Re: Repainted and rebuilt low trail Hunqapillar
I like the reverse brake levers a lot on the Bosco bars. The whole straight back section is now clean and you can place your hands anywhere on it, all the way up to and including the curves. The great benefit of the reverse brake lever is that pretty much excluding the curved section, you have access to your brake levers if all of a sudden you need to slow down. For me, from all but the most forefront section near the curves, I can reach the brake levers with my pinkie and annular (ring) fingers. When additional braking power is needed, I move my hands closer to the brake levers. In this regard, the Tektro 4.1 reverse brake levers were more user friendly than the Paul's, since the lever is a bit longer. However, I found them to be really squishy and remove a lot of the braking power, which was really noticeable on my Betty with the Racer/Silver F/R brakes. I first installed them on the Hunqapillar as well, and with the Neo-Retro/Touring brakes the effect was still there, so I changed to the Paul's reverse levers and the braking immediately improved and now feels comparable to how it felt with the MTB like brake levers. This weekend I'm installing the Paul's on the Betty as well. (3 sets of Tektro 4.1 levers will be up for sale soon) Bottom line, unless you insist on having bar-end shifters on either Bosco or Albatross bars, or any other bar that accepts them, I think reverse brake levers is the way to go. Rene, your builds are always a treat for me to look at and I'm sure many others here. Ryan On Sunday, March 24, 2013 10:36:16 PM UTC-7, René wrote: Hi all, After spending all weekend in the delicious task of rebuilding my newly painted Hunqapillar with its low trail fork, I'm happy to report that I'm mostly done and share the photos that proved I worked hard and loved every minute of it. Pictures to prove it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/ Afterwards, I took the bike on its maiden ride to test everything around the paths in Stanford University and stopped for a beautiful sunset moment in the garden outside the Rodin museum. I did several updates to this build: - Went with a 175mm 26/40 Sugino crankset, but will likely replace with a 172.5mm 24/38 I just converted. I've had some hip issues and seem to handle the 172.5mm better, although the Betty has the 175 and I've been doing fine with it. Go figure. Maybe the repeated attempts to stay on the Low Carb/High Fat diet with progressively shorter relapse intervals is working... The 24 will definitely help me in the climbs, at least until I lose significant weight, and for the same reason, the 38 may be a bit more friendly on the flats, especially when riding loaded or on a headwind. - Went with the 55cm steel Bosco handlebar instead of the previous 58cm Bullmoose Bosco. While the Bullmoose is awesome and very stiff, after riding it for a while before the repaint, it seemed a bit too wide. Riding the much narrower GB Promenade handlebar on the Betty has made me realize I prefer narrower handlebars than what I used to ride. While the Promenade may be too narrow for the Hunqapillar, especially off-road, the 55cm Bosco seems like a perfect middle ground. I've also noticed than as I've started riding narrower handlebars, my shoulder and neck pain have also significantly improved. Even when riding the GB Randonneur bars on the Atlantis with their more forward position. Another improvement I chose is to use reverse brake levers in order to get the full smooth sections of the Bosco bar while improving the hand positions that still allow me access to the brakes. I currently have a set of Tektro 4.1 reverse levers, but will try a set of Paul's reverse brake levers as they provide more versatility. The Tektro reverse brake levers also seem to provide a very flexy braking experience, so I want to see if the Pauls work better. - After much thought, I decided to not mount the Pass Stow rack that I had before and instead, mount the Nitto Mini + Tubus Nova that I first used on my Bombadil. I'm still keeping the Pass Stow rack and may install it again, but I didn't like the Porteur bags so much and will try using front panniers instead. - Decided to try a pair of 50mm Schwalbe Big Ben tires, and I have to say I'm quite impressed. They roll very nicely, and on the dirt and rough pavement provide a definite cushy ride. Did I say I'm quite impressed? - Still pending is the taping of the handlebars. I'd like to experiment with the full leather sewn-on bar cover that Velo Orange sells, but may also end up using Brooks leather tape or the super cushy Cinnelli gel-cork tape I'm using on the Atlantis. I really like it. I'll probably end up taping the handle bars next weekend, once I'm sure everything on the cockpit is the way I want it. Happy riding and planning an S240 soon, since I couldn't make it the last one organized through this list.
