[RBW] Re: Riv Thumbie Options Question - And Give Away!

2013-06-22 Thread Dave Johnston
I would be interested in the left only shifter. I've never tried
retrofriction so would be especially interested in that. I have only tried
the silver levers, and regular Shimano barcons in 7-8 spd. I plan to
install a right Barcon and in the left bar end a mirror. I was going to go
with a downtube on the left, but putting it up higher will work.

What kind of bars are you planning on setting up with the thumbies? Drops
or something upright like albatross?

Riv offers Paul Thumbies set up to work with Shimano bar end or with Riv
Silver Shifters. Among my vintage hoard are more Simplex Retrofriction and
Campy DT shifters than any human should be allowed. Believe Campy and
Retrofriction will work with the Silver Shifter set. Anyone try this?

OTOH, am going with the Jeff Jones modified Shimano 9 speed to 6 speed
cassette. I understand indexing will work on the correct set up. What do
those using the Thumbie / Shimano combo think of the shifting?

Now for the give away - As you may have deduced from the preceding
paragraph, this bike will be a 1x6 (and 1 depending on where I use it).
Whichever combo I go with, I will not need the front thumbie. I suppose
someone out there is doing a 2x or 3x 1 set up and can use a front only
thumbie. Or maybe someone wants to shift the front from the top of the bar
and the rear from the bar end or DT. Or most likely, someone managed to
bust a front thumbie but the rear is working perfect. Whichever, when I
get my order will happily ship the unused rear thumbie free of cost to
anyone who actually needs it. ( I know all to well from personal
experience hoarding is a disease - I don't want to contribute to anyone
else's malady ;). I will be making my order soon, so can send the other
half soon (wonder if Riv would agree to mail to you direct?)

*Bike is not a Riv, but will be made by near to Riv builder Curtis Inglis.
I will be reposting build pics in the Velocipedesalon bikes section
Retrotec string if anyone is interested.

2013-06-22 Thread Matthew J
Dave - Sorry, I promised the spare to someone who reached me off line
apparently a few seconds before your post.

At least for the start I am going with the Watson Ti Revelation
bar: http://www.watsoncycles.com/Handlebars.aspx?ProductId=20 essentially a
longer titanium version of the Jitensha flat bar that I use on my light
tour bike. I do have a set of Albatross bars on the side (that hoarding
problem again) should the Watson prove insufficient for the job.
