Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell BBH visit

2013-11-07 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm beginning to think that the best option, for me, is the $1/month plan
from that club and a decent brush with Costco Dove clone soap slivers. I
must first use up my bags of cheap razors and my tube of gel, so I have
time to ponder this life-changing decision.

OTOH, I did try to trim the pony tail yesterday, only to get it so lopsided
that now it's too short, and the big question now is grow it out or cut it
back to corporate accepted, cubicle slave style, short back and sides. (No
buzz cut for me.)

Patrick bobbed Moore in ABQ, NM, who is *not* soliciting advice about his
hair cut.

I've used it daily (mostly) since I got it, and it looks and works exactly

I have a shaving mug, which is just like a regular mug, but with little
nubs in the bottom to hold the soap, and I just throw all our old soap
slivers in. They lather up beautifully, and if you're showering with soap
you like, you'll like the soap you shave with. Every year or two I scrape
the mug out and start semi-fresh.

I never got used to more than 2 blades on a razor. The Schick Slim Twins

 Here's some fun reading:
 http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/Gillette%20Rasierer.htm

Funnily, the razor that preceded The New was The New Improved.
The easiest way to distinguish The New from previous models is that it
was the first Gillette not to have the two vampire teeth blade centering
pins on the underside of the razor.

To me, The New was the pinnacle of Gillette technology, better than the
very aggressive razors that came before it and better than all the later
solid bar (i.e. not open comb) razors of later decades.

Patrick: When you say you seek the best cheap blade or disposables, do
you mean basic modern cartridge-style blades or do you mean old school
double-edge blades and the like? If it's the latter, I imagine you can
spend hours (days?) skimming through the Badger Blade forums. But if you
want decent disposable cartridge blades, plus handles, I recommend Dollar

I have no affiliation with them. Am just a customer. And I like their copy:
The Humble Twin keeps it simple. It wields nothing but the truth.

2013-11-03 Thread Philip Williamson
I've been using a brush for years and years. Since I was a teenager, I
think. I got two brushes at a garage sale - one is stiff and terrible, and
flips soap at the mirror while making a latherless mess. The other is soft
and fantastic, creating lots of bubbly shaving foam with very little work.
I've used it daily (mostly) since I got it, and it looks and works exactly
the same as it ever did.

Re: Topics later in the thread. The blades I use are Gillette Mach 3(? 5?)
Three I think. The older ones that go for weeks. They aren't cheap, but I
don't find I buy them very often, either. I used to cut my own hair until
about 5 years ago when my vintage clippers died and the new ones I got were
just TERRIBLE. Now I just go to the barber, and they do a better job than I
could.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell BBH visit

2013-11-03 Thread Roger
Open combs like that nice Merkur are nice razors. They shave nice and
close, and don't clog so easily when one hasn't shaved for several days.

For Patrick and others, shaving is a regressive technology (now geared
primarily towards marketing advances) and many believe that unless you want
to go all the way to a straight edge, that the double-edged razor blade is
the next best thing.

Great razor blades can still be bought as cheaply as disposables (10 cents
to 50 cents a blade that will last for perhaps 5 to 10 or more shaves), and
the razors themselves (essentially blade holders) from the 1910s to 1970s
that one finds in antique stores and thrift stores can be as good or better
than those made today.

My two favorite razors are a refurbished Gillette open comb at least 50
years old, and a Merkur Slant razor I bought in an antique shop in Luling
Texas. I think it was made in Germany in the 1930s.

As for blades, each brand is slightly different: some too sharp, some too
dull, some quite stiff, some flexible... I like 7 o'clock most of the time,
but go for the Kai or Feather if I really want to...carefully... shave
really closely.

Roger, here's my grandfather's Gillette open comb:

don't know the age of it, but probably 50 y.o. at least. Works 100%

FWIW, I do a good shave once on a week on the weekend, then a quick
dry scrape daily. I hate shaving, but dislike a beard. It's
complicated being me.

Ironically, your photo is called The Old but I believe that was a razor
that debuted in 1929 and was named The New

Here's some fun reading:
http://www.mr-razor.com/Rasierer/Gillette%20Rasierer.htm

Funnily, the razor that preceded The New was The New Improved.
The easiest way to distinguish The New from previous models is that it
was the first Gillette not to have the two vampire teeth blade centering
pins on the underside of the razor.

To me, The New was the pinnacle of Gillette technology, better than the
very aggressive razors that came before it and better than all the later
solid bar (i.e. not open comb) razors of later decades.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell BBH visit

2013-10-24 Thread grant
It's a new experience for us...who are used to people trying to find us and
knowing something about the bikes before they come in. Now we get rare
curiosity seekers who don't know or care what a lug is, and mostly
ask, what's with the hatchets?, which of course is an excellent question.
I addressed that on a page I taped to the front door window, but not
everybody sees it, and--at least they're in the store. Our 3 day sales have
been $752, $412, and up to 7:30 tonite (we close at 9, but I left 730),
$316...and half is from friends-who-are-local customers already, and
relatives, and the landlord bought two hatchets today (he lives in a
spaceship house in Taos, is a retired carpenter, and needed them...he said).

We're going to start having events, like storytime for kids, how-two for
bike riders, and maybe even some ride, like Learn the Local Trails. It's
pretty clear that we can't just be cocky or even confident based on any
history we have already. This saturday will be interesting, since --
saturday shopper traffic, or something. Anywayit's been great to see
friends there..

I think there are pix on the BLug, and I'll make more.
