Re: [RBW] Re: SFR Lighthouse brevet. Roll call?
For the most part my sandbagging turned out to be accurate. My wife and kids had a fancy-ish dinner trip planned last night and I had made a mostly-binding promise to reach the finish before dark. So, when I got to Point Reyes Station I decided to skip the out and back leg to the Marshall Store. As I made the turn off the Pt-Reyes--Petaluma Road onto Nicasio I almost regretted my decision, because I felt great, but then I attributed that to the strong push of the tailwind. I got to the finish at about 5:10, allowing the volunteers to account for me safely. The finish control didn't close until 8:30, so I definitely could have done the whole thing, but clearly I wasn't up to the distance yet. It was a 185km day in the sun for me, but a DNF in the Big Book. So it goes. It was a lovely day out, and for me a nice kickoff to the year despite the DNF. Fairly windy? A little rough? Understatements of the year perhaps? (it's early in 2013) :) The rollers to the Marshall store didn't end up being rollers as we had to pedal to keep moving on the flat sections. No momentum was carried at all from the downhills. I was crawling in my granny on 4% grades. Of course, the same stretch going away from the Marshall store was a joy as I felt like Cancellara. Dude, do the populaire. It's only $5 and that mileage is easy if you eat a lot and take breaks every 2 hours or so. That will be my strategy as I have essentially been totally sedentary since the awesome Mt. Wow, you guys are off to an early start. OR Randonneur's 200k isn't until 03/30. Have fun and be sure to take pictures and post them here. I've done that ride multiple times, although not as a brevet, and while it's beautiful, the wind can make it really difficult. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: SFR Lighthouse brevet. Roll call?
Was considering it but didn't want to take the day off work, plus January mileage has been down. Looking to do the Two Rock 200k on Feb 17th, which is a Sunday one. My Salsa just got a bit rando-ified: I added a Mark's Rack and Sackville TrunkSack, so it's well prepared. A buddy of mine is close to pulling the trigger on a San Marcos, so maybe hill be there in February too. On Thursday, January 24, 2013 1:13:47 PM UTC-8, William wrote: I'm signed up for the Lighthouse 200k on Saturday. For those interested it starts at the Golden Gate Bridge, head up through Marin to Sir Francis Drake Blvd in Fairfax. Then the course follows Sir Francis Drake all the way through Samuel P Taylor Park until it hits Highway 1 in the tiny town of Olema. Then there's an out and back to the Pt Reyes Lighthouse. Then you scooch around and up Tomales Bay to Marshall. That leg is another out and back. Then you go through Pt Reyes Station and go around Nicasio reservoir to return to Sir Francis Drake Blvd, head back to Fairfax and through Marin the way you came. The weather report says cloudy but no rain, high of 54. I'm pretty badly under-prepared, but I've done this ride twice before, so I'm determined to get 'er done slow and steady. I checked the signup sheet and see Manny and Esteban are signed up to do it as well. Are there any other listers planning to do the Lighthouse 200? Or the 100? You guys are all textbook sandbaggers! It's not even Friday and all I see are claims of unfitness. This totally reminds me of the start line at the races. :) I'll be there with either my Atlantis or Indy Fab Club Racer, weather-dependent because the Atlantis has full fenders (even courtesy rear flap) and the IF doesn't. Both have fat tires for the horrible roads in the Samuel P. Taylor state park. And yes, I too have horrible fitness so I'll say hi when I pass. :) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. You got it Will. I'll be there, I'm hoping the there will be a break in the weather and sun will poke out. But doesn't look like it. My motivation is taking shots of people riding back from the light house. There's BBQ oysters at Marshalls!? I was told to get the Chowder. But the oysters sound amazing! I'm willing to jump on this Rivendell wagon for the 200k. Looking for a good solid pace with great company. @Eric - If I get the chance to see you on the road I was wondering if I could pick your brain about your PBP experience. I have this crazy idea of going to Europe and riding the PBP. But don't know if I want to commit to wanting to riding it fixed. Anyone willing to carpool? I'll in San Leandro and planning to drive into the city. Was looking to grab some Tpumps in San Mateo afterwords the the best Milk tea ever. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: SFR Lighthouse brevet. Roll call?
Manny, To clarify, PBP only happens every four years. The most recent one was in 2011 so we all have a bit of time till the next one to decide if and what bike to ride. In my opinion, the route and scenery are not the main reasons to go do PBP. It is riding with thousands of other randonneurs from around the world, and experiencing the overwhelming support and camaraderie from people along the route. Sure, any riding in France is great, but if you just want to go ride in France, there are tons of more interesting or challenging routes to do than trying to recreate PBP on your own. Do PBP as PBP. To rivramble or whatever, you have the whole country for that. All that said, I will be doing the 200k on one of my Pelicans. See you all out there.
