2016-10-21 Thread René Sterental
That is a custom (and expensive) rack that Steve Rex does for his custom
frames. I got one (plus his custom front rack as well) on my 650b custom.
They're not available off the shelf, but I'm sure he'd build you one if you
wanted.

Schmidt uses their own electronics. Also, they use a heavy co-axial wire to
connect the hub and headlight, as well as the headlight and taillight. Even
15 years ago, when they were selling Busch & Müller headlights, before they
started making their own, they modified the Lumotecs with the same heavy
duty co-axial wiring they use on their own lights today.

2016-10-08 Thread Jeremy Till
As a mechanic I've worked on and installed a lot of dynamo lights from B,
Supernova, and various OEM (read: cheep) brands, and I've always really
liked the supernova stuff. It definitely doesn't win on size and
brightness of beam (B is winning that these days, as others have noted),
but in my book it wins in terms of the quality and beefiness of the casing,
mounting hardware, and wiring. It feels quality, is easy to adjust, stays
adjusted, and can take a few knocks. There are a couple of tricks to doing
the tailight wiring splice properly, but they are all outlined in their
instructions and once it's made, that's a really beefy connection. The
wiring has thicker protective casing against rips and abrasion than the
stock stuff on B lights. Yes, proprietary taillight, but it's a really
cool taillight that probably wins on the wide angle visibility to size
ratio.

I haven't worked on the Schmidt stuff that much, so I can't compare, but
that sounds like it combines good quality hardware with the electronics and
wiring of the B stuff.

I recently got a deal on a couple of Luxos U's, so that's what I'm running
currently, but I got a Supernova for my wife's bike, who loves her bike but
is not the most gentle with it.

I have the IQ-X on two bikes. Super bright with a very nice beam pattern. I
have mine adjusted so the leading edge of the lighted area is about 150 feet in
front of me—it’s that bright, but also very well focused to avoid blinding
oncoming riders and motorists. And … if you need, the mount rotates to use in
the “upside down” position.

Yea, when I switched from 1st gen Supernova to the 80 lux iQ Premium Cyo T
Senso it was a pretty big difference in the real world. The beam was too
narrow on the Supernova for riding in the dark at high speeds. I would
usually stay behind someone with a better light on downhills when doing
Rando rides. The IQ Premium is much better.. I don't blame you for
wanting the IQ-X, that's another 20lux or 25% brighter again than my light.
