[RBW] Re: Saluki Brake / Rack Mating Question
Perhaps have a mechanic friend look at how they are set up. I have them on two bikes, 4 years on one, 2 years on the other, with zero adjustments since the initial set up. I love these brakes. In case it matters to your decision making process, the mini can probably carry a lot more weight. [RBW] Re: Saluki Brake / Rack Mating Question
Thanks Phil, but I can't open that link. I'm currently finishing up a big home improvement project then expecting to be away for two weeks, so not moving forward on bike projects with any speed. For now I have implemented the spacer solution. When I return from vacation I will offer my Ebisu for sale with a small Nitto rack. If it doesn't sell as a whole i will break it up into pieces, put the nitto on the saluki and sell the VO rack. I'll also be selling my '83 Trek 620. [RBW] Re: Saluki Brake / Rack Mating Question
Michael, sorry I can't help, but you've helped me. I have the same brakes and rack on my daughter's bike. I don't like the Tektros much, because they seem to require too much attention - they have to be adjusted every time the weather changes. I was thinking about the Pauls, but you've convinced me to live with the adjustments. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Saluki Brake / Rack Mating Question
It would be cool if you could get the canti-post struts separately so you could run a Mark's Rack with the canti-post mounting, but still had adjustable struts so you could accommodate high-stack brakes, like the Pauls. Unfortunately, it looks like you can only buy those struts in 70mm an 120mm lengths, which is not going to be long enough. That would have been a slick setup. http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main_page=product_infoproducts_id=7978 On Sunday, March 17, 2013 8:25:33 PM UTC-7, William wrote: I would advise ditching the Paul brakes. [RBW] Re: Saluki Brake / Rack Mating Question
Thanks for all the help; it both clarified the issues and lifted me out of a stuck place. I had thought about the spacer solution, but living out in the boonies I thought tracking down an M5x35 allen head bolt and a 20 mm spacer seemed unlikely. As luck would have it, I had to go into town ( 45 miles round trip) today and much to my surprise Sticks and Stuff actually had the parts I needed! Jetising the Paul's was never really an option, one because they are the easiest cantis to set up and live with ever and two because I owe them my life, literally. (Stopped alive in front of the dreaded right hook.) Anyway almost all my bikes have Paul's brakes - the Ram has Racer Ms and the tandem studed Racers. Only my old racing bike has Chorus, and my wife's has Superbe. Anyway things are back together, but I am still wondering if I wouldn't be better off swapping the rack with the Nitto Mini ( I misspoke when I wrote M12) which is now on the Ebisu I am preparing for sale. One bolts to the fork and one to the brake. [RBW] Re: Saluki Brake / Rack Mating Question
Oh, yes! If your 'luki has the mid-fork braze-ons and you have a Nitto Mini rack already, absolutely go that route. [RBW] Re: Saluki Brake / Rack Mating Question
I tend to fall in the if it ain't broke, don't fix it camp. I would keep the Tektros and put the Pauls on something else. It also has a set of VO AL fenders which are bolted to the fenders. I wanted to swap the brakes for my Neo Retros, which first required a new mounting bolt, which I obtained from Pauls. But when I mounted them on the bile I found that the rack no longer mated with the fender. Apparently the Paul bolt is beefier and longer than the VO version. As a result the rack sits about an inch or more above the fenders. This presents me with some options A: Can I bend the rack to fit? This doesn't look easy. B: Ignore the problem and the connection between the rack and front fender. C: Sell the rack and use an M12 mounted to the fork braise ons, which will probably create a different contact point on the fender. D: Abandon the Pauls brakes. Help wanted.
