Wonder how they will compare to the schwable big ones that are roughly the same size. Can't imagine they could be much lighter than those. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Seen on My instagram: 700x55 Compass slicks
I'm just guessing like everybody else of course, but I can't imagine this not fitting on the Atlantis or even Tim's Appaloosa. The Rat Trap Pass comes in at quite a bit under the labeled size so, if the same hold true here, it shouldn't even be close. The Hunquapillar and Clem, on the other hand, easily fit the even-larger but similarly-targeted schwalbe super moto/big one/g-one. To me, the existence of that tire is what makes this one curious indeed. As noted by others, there's a relatively small, niche set of bikes that could use it. Even though I have the schwalbes and am happy with them, I strangely feel almost obligated to buy this tire at some point, just to reward Compass for doing such cool stuff. I've had Compass on three bikes and I can't imagine buying any other tire (except maybe for a total city workhorse/grocery getter). This will fit on the new Atlantis and other RIv bikes with the 2.2 / 55cm clearance? I am a big believer in Compass tires now that I have spent some time with the Barlow Pass on my Sam. I was initially really excited to see the 700x55 version coming out but I now wonder if they will even fit my Appaloosa. I think the Atlantis and Hunqapillar clearances are a little more generous. I will definitely buy them if I discover that they will fit my bike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Seen on My instagram: 700x55 Compass slicks
I kinda doubt his views have changed on what is optimal for his style of riding, but I know that some folks on the internet have been asking for this tire. Also, check out how many different 700c sizes are available. Maybe he wants folks to be able to run the fattest supple rubber they can squeeze into their less-than-optimal frames. All speculation of course! It definitely is a funny size. Too big for most monstercross frames (assuming the tire measures true to size), kinda small for a 29er. I see folks around here bringing 29ers for gravel rides, so maybe that’s the target audience? In the Riv world, pretty exciting for the Hunq and maybe the Atlantis and Joe. Definitely superniche. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Seen on My instagram: 700x55 Compass slicks
I think it's simply that his market demands this sort of tire. And I think that there is a rather big demand for fat, supple 29er tires; I predict these will be best sellers. I both agree and disagree with Jan's views on wheel size, tire width, and handling, meaning that "optimum" in reference to handling is a word that has to accommodate so many different preferences. I can certainly tell the difference between a 26er with light 55 mm tires, and my Matthews with 29 1/2" tall, 61mm actually wide tires; but given that these last seem to me to handle sand (and small bumps too) better (Jan disagrees), I choose the less nimble handling larger wheels, and find that these are really not bad at all. On the other extreme: very light, 24 3/4" (559 X 29mm) wheels on my Riv Roads: is the handling of these wheels less "optimum" than 650B X 42? Perhaps to some riders; perhaps even generally, in some theoretical way; but in my own experience over very many different bikes over almost 50 years of assembling or modifying (and certainly buying and flipping) my own, they set a benchmark for good handling -- Grant designed the frames to accommodate such light and short wheels. He certainly did say that at some point. I think that was even prior to the 700x44 came out. Maybe his views have changed. Apart from Rivs and monstercross-type bikes, what else would these tires go on? 29ers? Seems like a very niche-within-niche product. Re: [RBW] Re: Seen on My instagram: 700x55 Compass slicks
Well, it seems you do miss some things when you forgo social media. I'll be interested when a description (and a photo! I wonder if it will seem as pneumatic as the Rat Trap Pass?) appears on more retrograde platforms. Jan mentioned a tire like this some time ago, but when I inquired late last year about any forthcoming >=50 mm Compass tire, I got no response, so I went ahead and bought some Big Ones. I'd almost be disappointed, were the Big Ones not so delightful (one rolldown test showed the BOs faster than the road tires tested, and this with tubes). But I'd be interested to learn more about the Compass 29er tire On Mon, Apr 9, 2018 at 7:40 AM, John Phillipswrote: > 700 x 55 Compass tires?!?!
