David, I run the new Ultegra short cage on my Ram with 44/30 11-28 9
spd set up with DT friction. It is the best shifting setup I have used in
35 years of cycling, an that includes Ultegra SIS.

Before folks jump on the why are you limiting yourself to such a small
range of gears train of thought, I will say most, if not all, of my riding
will be in and around the greater Chicagoland area, which is flat in the
most literal sense of the word. A small range of gears is what I need and
 will use.
 Drivetrain will consist of:
 42t ring up front
 12-23 8-speed rear
 Friction dt shifter.

What is still up in the air is what rear derailer to use.
Any recommendations for a short cage derailleur? I have a couple long cage
types I could use, but it seems unnecessary.

Thanks in advance. Redwood build is coming together and should be done
 soon.

2014-04-03 Thread Ron Mc
I ran a Shimano 600EX on 5-8-speed friction applications and really loved
it. When I widened my rear, I found a NOS Cyclone GT. It's in a spanish
cedar cigar box in my garage now - Many miles, but still works great. I
had it on my Moser before I found a Campy Chorus. At 190g, the Arabesque
is lighter than anything except the carbon Campys, and then only 10g
heavier.

2014-04-03 Thread Joe Bernard
I've used various silver shortcage Shimano derailers from the mid-90's
onward which work well, look nice, and can be had for not too much money
(as long as you avoid new-in-package from crazy people who think they're
vintage and rare). A search for Shimano 9-speed road will bring up a
good selection.
