[RBW] Re: Sweating on your chain=rust=WD-40?

2014-07-01 Thread Garth

Well, wd-40 is a lubricant, but it is very light. Apparently too light for
your conditions ! You likely could use something heavier.

I sweat alot too here in East, and to keep it off the bike I 1. wear a
Headsweats cap to absorb some sweat, and 2. carry a small microfiber
cloth(or a regular hanky) in my pocket to wipe off sweat before it drips.
It's so thin I just end up riding with it in my hands though on humid
days. In days of yore I would have been too self conscious to do this, but
now I don't care ! It beats sweating all over the bike !

No, WD-40 plus my usual lubricant, seems to be what's working better to
prevent rust. I didn't use WD-40 before the recent rust problems.

I may try bar chain oil, I have it on hand because I own a chainsaw.

[RBW] Re: Sweating on your chain=rust=WD-40?

2014-07-01 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
You have to understand that I get this visceral reaction to anyone using
WD40 on anything ;^)

I'd probably amend your lube procedure to cover more links. If you are
just lubing 6-8 links, you are probably missing the majority of your
drivetrain. If you have enough humidity to get corrosion on your chain
(not the case in CA, except in winter or if you live in SF), you want a
reasonably tenacious formula and it wouldn't hurt to leave a bit on the
outside. You might experiment with something other than FL Wet. You might
also experiment with lubing the night before you ride, then letting it get
tacky overnight, then wiping lightly the next day - or just wiping up the
drips. As long as you are lubing the pivots and plates rather than the
rollers, you shouldn't cause too much of an issue. If you are getting
surface rust on the rollers, that will probably disappear before you are up
the street.

Hope that helps!

I have a big container of FL Wet, that's why I keep using it. Trying to
get value for my money. You're right though, I am probably not putting
enough on. I've always gone on the light side for drivetrain cleanliness,
but that probably needs to be re-examined in light of what's happening with
the rust.

I agree with Jim's feelings about WD-40. It's something I might use as a
substitute for Liquid Wrench to loosen jammed up fittings, but not as a
lubricant.

And I'd go further still in suggesting the oiler drops lubricant on more
than 6 or so links. I'm a drop-a-link guy who prefers over night drying
prior to wiping excess lub from the outside and sides of the chain (that's
three surfaces).

Whatever your normal lube, keep a thin film on the outside as well. Do too
good of a job wiping the exterior chain and rust will appear. I haven't
decided it the runst is a problem or not -- but in Colorado it's not likely

My normal maintenance regimen has been a complete cleaning every 5-700

Finish Line wet every 100-200 miles using same procedure, until next

Well now my chain is getting rusty with this regimen. So in desperation I
coated the chain in WD-40 the last two times before I rode, wiped off the
excess, and then applied some Finish Line, but only on to 4 links this
time, and rotate drivetrain again, wipe off excess, and ride again. So far
this seems to be working better, and I am still sweating onto my chain.

Maybe it really is Water-Dispersant 40. And extremely salty
 Water-Dispersant 40 at that.

 Anyone else had similar experiences?
