[RBW] Re: Ultra Romance and his Rivendell Atlantis.

2019-01-09 Thread Tim Bantham
The two Rivendell models that I most covet are the Atlantis and the
Hunqapillar. When I was considered buying my first Riv I found a review on
the Atlantis that Benedict had done along with Bikepacking.com. For those
who may remember this spread it featured photos of him making coffee
outside alongside this gorgeous Atlantis. My exposure to that review really
finally convinced me to sell off my carbon unitasker bikes in favor of a
lugged steel bag toting machine that could carry me and my stuff off into
the wilderness. I balked at the price of a MUSA Atlantis and decided on a
complete Sam as my gateway into Riv. I have since purchased a Appaloosa as
my second Riv to serve as my touring rig. I love the Appaloosa but
sometimes wish I waited just a little longer until the MIT Atlantis became
available. It wouldn't make any sense for me to replace my Appaloosa with
the Atlantis now because they do exactly the same thing. I have nothing
against 2TT's but I do like the appearance of the truss style 2TT on the
Atlantis slightly better than the Joe. I am hoping that Rivendell also
decides to do a MIT Hunq at some point.

Looks swanky, though personal preference for me is flat bars with cushy
grips when it comes to rough off-roading; having my hands in the hoods
while i'm getting bounced around at any noticeable speed just isn't
comfortable for me and my thumb wedges.

The idea of just riding your bike with what works and not always looking at
what the trends are or what the "best" bike/gear/tech for a situation seems
very Riv.

Happy riding everyone,

I met Bene in northern New Mexico in what was the low point of my Great

something along the lnes of "my son makes the best bike bags so you should
buy one". Any commercial you remember is an effective one. Kinda fun, too.

Is there some sort of history with Ultraromance co-opting queer culture or

[RBW] Re: Ultra Romance and his Rivendell Atlantis.

2019-01-08 Thread Chris L
The new Hunqapillar is sort of an anomaly. It was always RBW's true
expedition or off-road bike but the new versions actually have short
chainstays, compared to other new Riv models. I believe the 56 cm Hunq has
chainstays that are only 49 cm. I also believe that the Gus Boots-Willsen
is somewhat a stand-in for the Hunqapillar and it appears to have very long
chainstays. It would be interesting to hear RBW's thinking on where the
new Hunqapillar fits and why they kept the chainstays on the shorter side.
It would also be interesting to hear why it's currently on hiatus. Maybe
they plan an MIT version? That would be spectacular.

[RBW] Re: Ultra Romance and his Rivendell Atlantis.

2019-01-08 Thread jack loudon
Hmmm... Ultra-romance is called a 'Rivendell sponsored rider and mobile
dealer". Does this mean Ultra got a free frame plus revenue on (his) sales
in exchange for promoting Rivendell? No negativism intended, as it sounds
like a good move, that will potentially expose Rivendell to a younger
hipper market.

I just put a deposit down on my drop bar mountain bike: a 56cm 650B
Atlantis. That's going to be SUPER fun!

Coincidentally, I just shaved my beard, too. Benedict and I have a growing
list of things in common:

We both have ridden a 650B Atlantis as a mountain bike
We both think that a mountain bike is a bike you ride in the mountains
We both shaved our unruly beards off
We both are fans of Rivendell
We both think that the handwringers wring their hands too much over
geo-charts
