[RBW] Re: WTB/T Nitto Tallux 5cm Stem

I'm going to bump this because I'm still looking. With all the bar swapping
going on around here, I'm hoping someone might have one of these that needs
a new home.

While I'm at it, I'm also looking for some Silver Shifters (1st gen) in
good shape.

Looking to shorten my reach a bit, and I'm wondering if one of you
might be holding a Nitto Tallux 5 or 6cm stem (25.4, 225mm). I'm happy to
purchase or I have an 8cm, 26.0 for trade.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: 50 cm Roadini

2024-05-14 Thread Doug H.
The 47 is the previous geometry, I think. I compared the two on Bike
Insights and there is quite a difference, more so than you'd think between
the sizes. The 47 has much less stack and the top tube is about 4 cm
shorter. I'd hold out for a 50 in the newer geometry if I were Leah. The
newer models can handle wider tires too.

Thanks John and Johnny. Great to see the pics.

John, some of those trails look pretty challenging, and like a blast.

Johnny, I remember that salmon/pink/not sure what to call it Hunq from pics
you posted a while back. It’s unforgettable for sure!

Thanks again. It’ll be nice to start a new “show us your Hunqapillar

I have a tubus logo evo in black. the 2-tiered system allows for lower
center of gravity for panniers, as well as no overlap between the panniers
and whatever you load on top of the rack, and the lower tier is off-set

The Dream bar was the classic standard drop bar made for Rivendell by
Nitto. If I remember correctly its what they offered prior to the Noodle.
It was sold along with the Noodle bar for a bit before they just dropped it
because the Noodle was the drop they would suggest over all others.

Where did y'all read these were a lightweight Nitto Noodle? They are
listed at 380 grams which is inline with other Noodles. My understanding
was they were 50 cm wide--two cm wider than the then widest 48 cm
offering. Then, Riv went all 7 minute abs and released the 52 and 54
centimeter variants. I recently had a conversation with someone at Riv
regarding the widest Noodles who said that Nitto is trying to deprecate
 the
26.0 clamp diameter. I personally have had 46 cm Noodles, the Fairweather
174AA short shallow Noodle in 46 cm, and this week I swapped the 54 cm
 ones
off my Hunqapillar in favor of the new Ritchey Corralitos bar which may be
my favorite drop bar for a longish top tube bike. I wanted to like the
Noodle, but they have too much drop for me.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Soba Handlebars

2024-04-27 Thread Conway Bennett
Bill,

Thanks for the clarification. My posts weren't meant to be adversarial,
just pedantic. I came into Riv via EcoVelo ~2010, and I didn't own my
first Riv until 2013, so the "Soba" predates me, and I thought that y'all
were using it colloquially for "So Bar"--the marketing content from Sim
Works makes references to literal soba noodles. I'm curious if the
contemporary "So Bar" is inspired by the "Soba".

2024-04-27 Thread Igor
Retro-Gression sells both the Noodle (Which is the M177) and the Dream
(M176). Both, per the description, are designed by Rivendell, and I notice
that the M176 is 26mm clamp, has a 140mm drop/90mm reach - is this the Soba
or something
else? https://www.retro-gression.com/products/nitto-m176-dream-handlebar

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Soba Handlebars

2024-04-26 Thread Bill Lindsay
The Simworks So Bar is a handlebar that resembles a Nitto Noodle but in a
wide width that was made in the late 2010s and early 2020s

The Nitto Soba Noodle is a completely different handlebar that was made by
Nitto and offered by Rivendell in the mid to late 2000s

Do not conflate the two. This thread and WTB is focused on the Nitto Soba
Noodle -NOT- the Simworks So Bar.

I think the So Bar came out in the fall of 2018. Here's the intro from Sim
Works:

https://sim-works.com/en/news/ramen-nope-i-take-so-bar

They also appear to have a sleeve. But I've never owned the So Bar, so I
don't know what the production model was like in practice. I had a 50 cm
Rando Bar from Velo Orange that I really liked at the time the So Bar was
released, and that's why I didn't buy it, but I love 50 cm + drop bars.

It seems as though there is plans for a new iteration of the So Bar. Sim
Works USA wrote, "These were a very popular bar that we've temporarily
discontinued while we make some changes to a new version."

I'm a bit of a Noodle/drop bar connoisseur myself. I currently in use the
Crust Nullabar on my Monstercross, Sim Works Wild Honey on my Lightning
Bolt, and Ritchey Corralitos on my Hunqapillar. I wish the Fairweather All
Road 174 AA bar was offered in a wider size, but my criticism of the 54 cm
Noodle is that it lost the back sweep that enjoyed in the Noodle as it got
wider.

When RIvendell sold them back in the day I think Grant said they were about
60g lighter than a standard noodle bar. That is right in line with what you
found, Bill.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Soba Handlebars

2024-04-26 Thread Bill Lindsay
"Where did y'all read these were a lightweight Nitto Noodle?"

They were already out of production when I came in 2009. If I type "Nitto
Soba Noodle" into the googler, I get hits to bike forums in 2007 discussing
them. At that time they are talking about how the regular Noodle mod 177
is the heavier cheaper version, and the Soba Noodle is in Nittos
"ultralight" flavor.

There are 9 of them in my garage right now. 8 are on bikes, and 1 is
loose. 7 are Mod 177 Noodles, and 2 are the Soba Noodle. The shape is
identical. I guess you'd just have to take my word for it. I'm kind of a
Noodle zealot. Most of the 9 in my garage are 460mm and a couple are
440mm.

The loose bar is the model 177 regular Noodle. It has 460 stamped in the
end and it measures 460mm center to center. The Soba Noodle that went on
my new Roadeo had 460 stamped in the end and it also measures 460mm center
to center. The regular Noodle has a "sleeve" in the middle, with embossed
Nitto graphics into the metal of the sleeve. The Soba Noodle has a bulge
in the middle, and the Nitto graphics are black ink or similar printing on
the metal. My build notes indicate I weighed the Soba Noodle at 310g. The
loose regular 460mm Noodle weighs 372g on the same gram scale just now.

Look at Bill just strolling in and flexing about his super stash of these

It looks like I might have a line on one but I agree that they would knock

[RBW] Re: WTB: 700c wheelset (135mm rear) for Homer

2024-04-26 Thread Bill Lindsay
Maybe?

Several years back I sold a Complete Toyo Atlantis to a neighbor. I sold
the whole bike for $1900 and now looking at it through a 2024 lens, I gave
it away. I reached out to my neighbor to see if he'd sell it back. My
neighbor indicated he lives overseas for now, and that he sold the frame
set for $1400 a while back. The build kit is still in his garage, around
the corner from me. I've asked him to sell me back the build kit, and I'm
awaiting his response on that. If I procure that build kit, the wheel set
would be sensational on a 700c Hilsen. Nothing is assured quite yet.

I've got three of them in my stable, and would buy several more. I've told
Grant at least once that if he got Nitto to make 200 of them, and he did a
presale at $150, that I bet he could pre-sell them before any of them
actually get made. That would be a nice $30,000 cash flow exercise. I'm
sure there are barriers to doing such a thing that I don't know, but the
$140 MSRP on Rene Herse bars certainly suggests that $150 is a price point
that would make sense for all involved.

you get the 19 % VAT deducted when shipping to the U.S. so the

[RBW] Re: WTB 26" Front Wheel with Generator Hub

2024-03-28 Thread Ian A
John,

Since 2013, have bought from bike24.de, rose.de and bike-discount.de in
Germany. All have been excellent. My last order was in 2020 from Rose
Bike, when I couldn't find what I needed locally. Things have changed over
the past 10 years or so. There are quite a number of restrictions by
manufacturers as to what can leave the EU (in order to protect local North
America vendors, which makes good sense) and things like batteries now fall
under restrictions for dangerous cargo. Rose removed the cycle computer
from my order because of the single CR2032 battery couldn't be shipped
outside of the EU without extensive paperwork!

Naturally, with this being the RBW list, look for local options first.
Maybe a list member is holding just what you are looking for. :)

2024-03-27 Thread Ian A
Just be aware that is a fairly low end dynamo in the Shimano range.
Slightly heavy and draggy in comparison to the higher end Shimano and SP
products.

Some shopping around on the German sites might get you an SP hub or an
LX/XT hub built into a wheel. Shimano does have a restriction on allowing
the export of their products from Europe to North America. A complete wheel
might be excepted from the restriction.

I have bought a fair bit of stuff over the years (Tubus racks, B lights,
Brooks Saddles, Ortlieb panniers and handlebar bag, tires, spokes and
nipples etc) and quite a few of those items are now restricted for export.
Xxcycle in France doesn't seem to observe those restrictions (yet). Maybe
they do now, my last order was while back.

My main reason for ordering from Germany is because the economy shipping
option comes through the regular postal system and gets delivered by Canada
Post on this end. Canadian consumers will have horror stories of shipments
delivered via UPS and FedEx due to the brokerage fees for customs entry.
Also, shipping tends to be faster to Canada from Europe than from the USA.

[RBW] Re: WTB 26" Front Wheel with Generator Hub

2024-03-27 Thread JohnS
Thank you Mathias, that looks like a good deal, I'll have to check to see
what the shipping would be. I may go that route if isn't too expensive and
I don't hear from someone on the list.

Hello NYCBikeGuy, sorry to give the impression that I know how to build
wheels, I don't, but I've heard swapping rims isn't too hard, so I was
going to give it a try if needed.

[RBW] Re: WTB Riv Canti/Vbrake Frame in 54/55/56

2024-03-27 Thread Drew Fitchette
Figure I’ll throw one last shout on this thread before I resign myself to
the next batch of Sam’s or Appa’s coming later this spring/summer.

Interested in any Riv suitable for a 835-840 PBH!

Bill's question and suggestion to clarify was pretty insightful then.
I suffer from the same handicap as you: short legs/ long torso. (6'2" w/
 87 pbh in my case.)

Knowing what I now know after many years of figuring it out, I'd
suggest making sure you get the biggest frame you can possibly stand over.

Especially with the older models that tended to have proportionately
shorter top tubes. They might still only be marginally long enough, but
the good news is that there was likely a size increment that worked pretty
well. The later, expanded-sizing models don't come in as many increments,
but the good nees here is that if you DO happen to find one that maxes-out
your standover height it is likely to be the most no-compromise, best-fit
bike you've ever owned. Just don't settle until you find it.

Also, FWIW, the very first run of sam hillbournes (canti versions in
metalic orange or sagey green wihout creme headtubes and with gold decals,
I recall), which were among if not THE first to use the expanded sizing,
had longer top tubes than later versions. Im always on the lookout for
 one
of those, even though i don't "need" one.

I'm in Atlanta GA, but I travel all over the East coast for work. Also
have shipped plenty with bikeflights and happy to talk to folks from
 wherever about what's available!

 Thanks for the thoughts Bill!

My saddle height is 74cm and the Atlantis I just got rid of is a 53cm.
I'm 6' with a 840 pbh, so pretty long torso and shorter legs.

Budget is fairly open depending on what the Frame is/how rare it might
 be.

older models if the sizing works/they're in good shape(Hunq, Saluki,

Figure this might be a long shot, but better to make it known here

[RBW] Re: WTB: Bosco and JJJ Bars

2024-03-26 Thread Paul Donald
I have a set of the VO Granola Bars and a set of the chromo Bosco's at 52
width. Both in silver.

Was thinking about keeping the Bosco's for a Riv that I'm in glacial-paced
negotiations about but i think I might prefer something with a lot less
rise. Message me if you'd like and we can talk price.

I'm in LA so that might make shipping a little affordable.

Hehe, knew that comment was coming the minute I posted Bill!

Yeah, makes sense! Would love to test ride a few models In the greater
Atlanta area if folks have stuff from 54cm and up.

The bikeflights/traveling still Applies in the case that someone has
something interesting to sell.

 Thanks for the thoughts Bill!

My saddle height is 74cm and the Atlantis I just got rid of is a 53cm.
I'm 6' with a 840 pbh, so pretty long torso and shorter legs.

Budget is fairly open depending on what the Frame is/how rare it might
 be.

I think you missed the tactical objective of my suggestion: If somebody
near you has a bike that may be a good candidate, they may let you test
ride it, even though it's not for sale. If somebody in Atlanta lets you
ride their 60cm Platypus, then you might conclude: "hot DAMN! That's

Nobody is going to ship you a bike to test ride :)

Bill's question and suggestion to clarify was pretty insightful then. I
suffer from the same handicap as you: short legs/ long torso. (6'2" w/ 87
pbh in my case.)

Knowing what I now know after many years of figuring it out, I'd suggest
making sure you get the biggest frame you can possibly stand over.

Im always on the lookout for one
of those, even though i don't "need" one.

I'm in Atlanta GA, but I travel all over the East coast for work. Also have
shipped plenty with bikeflights and happy to talk to folks from wherever

"Figure this might be a long shot, but better to make it known here before
starting to dig too deep into the corners of the internet."

It's a great move to post here. Good luck with the search. Some of the
models you mention are "expanded" with more of a TT slope vs others like
the Saluki which is flatter in TT slope, so the numbers associated with the
sizes are kind of different. Maybe to normalize it all, you should list
your Saddle Height, and/or the size Atlantis you got rid of. Like, I'm a
75.5cm Saddle Height and I'd use a 54 Hunqapillar and maybe a 58 or 60
Saluki. Finally, I've had "shaking bikes loose" that weren't previously
"for sale" by stating my budget. Just a suggestion. Many people think
it's crazy to actually say what you are willing to spend.

Sorry to hear it's been discontinued! A list member came through and I'm
all set. I see that Ben's Cycle is all sold out now too. Such a bummer for
a well functioning piece by Nitto. There doesn't seem to be any equivalent
either. One of the nice things about this too is that it can lower the
attachment point for the bag (which I need on my Ram).

[RBW] Re: WTB: Campeur Front Rack

2024-02-26 Thread Matthew Rebmann
Nitto's stuff is top notch but it's not *quite* what I'm looking for. That
all being said, if I just can't find what I'm looking for then I'll likely
end up buying the Nitto rack. I'm just stubborn and figure I might get
lucky if I'm persistent lol.

I particularly like the integrated decaleur the VO Campeur rack has, along
with the mirror finish (rather than Nitto's satin nickel) and it'll match
nicely either VO's Campeur rear rack which I intend on buying soon. I'm
honestly pretty surprised they discontinued it.
