Gabe suggests a good couple o' routes - are you starting from the city? If
so, you'll have to climb and ride a bit to hit Bolinas Ridge Trail. From
Ridgecrest (Seven Sisters) where it connects with Bofax, it starts wet and
sloppy, then gets rocky for a bit, then opens up and is more of a farm
road/firetrail. Before it connects with SFD, there is a trail which drops
down to the Cross Marin Path, which is the bike path that parallels SFD and
goes to Samuel P. Taylor State Park. You can follow the path and then
continue on an unpaved road all the way to Inkwells Bridge, which puts you
back on SFD (and you can then head back through Lagunitas and Woodacre to
Fairfax.
You probably won't find Bofax on a map, but that is the Bolinas-Fairfax
Road. Also, SFD = Sir Francis Drake Blvd
55's will probably cover anything you are likely to find on the mountain,
though the top end of Eldridge Grade (where it connects with East
Ridgecrest just below the East Peak Parking lot - not really on any route
suggested here) is pretty rocky.
There can be some pretty good climate changes in the bay area. Layers and
a shell/vest is good.
If you wanted to roll up RR Grade out of Mill Valley, then cut over on Old
Stage Road, you can pick up the road at Pantoll Ranger Station. Head up
Ridgecrest (which I think is actually Pantoll at that point, then cut
left on (West) Ridgecrest when you get to Portrero Meadow. That would get
you Bolinas Ridge Trail. Once you commit to Bolinas Ridge, you are on it
for a bit until you reach the trail mentioned above.
You could bail out onto Bofax Road, which will eventually drop you back
down to Fairfax (after a climb or two - you'll drop steeply from the ridge
to Alpine Dam, then continue around the watershed lakes, over another
smaller ridge and then drop down past the golf course.
Going through Fairfax, there's Gestalt House on (what becomes at that
point) Bolinas Ave. Also Iron Springs Brewery on Center. Expanded natural
foods store right there. You're probably an hour from the city at that
point, via a well-travelled but not-always-obvious route. The cue sheet
for the 200K from SFR is helpful.
http://www.sfrandonneurs.org/route-archive.htm (the populaire and
lighthouse 200K follow the same roads out of Fairfax.)
Hope that makes sense.

My brother and I have been talking Bolinas Ridge or perhaps some Mount Tam
fire roads heading generally north via dirt and then riding Drake to get
back south this Wednesday. Anyone interested in coming or want to offer
improved route ideas?
I'll be riding 700x55's.
