Re: [RBW] Re: Wrong Kind of Tire Tread

2013-04-16 Thread Steven Frederick
I know what you're talking about--I've had this problem a couple of times
with fatter (38+) tires. If I run the front pressure too low, it feels
darty when turning--the front dives into the turn too quickly and feels
unstable. Tracking in a straight line is affected, too--it comes off it's
line too easily and feels unstable. Usually adding 5-10psi is enough to
resolve it without too much impact on comfort...

Have to adjust slow-speed line more often. Can't ride hands-free at high
speed (still okay at medium). Fast downhill left-right turn transition
feels much less solid. I think raising the pressure would deal with some of
this (had similar issues with 33.3 JB's until I raised psi) but that
negates the benefits of fat tires.

So still playing with them and like a lot, but at this point, high
volume/low pressure has some trade offs.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I've been holding out to buy
another set of 40mm Supremes from Riv but their arrival keeps getting
delayed and now I'm painted into a corner to pay for 2-day shipping to buy
them elsewhere online... and I'm cheap. I imagine there's a LBS around
portland that has them in stock but I've checked a couple shops near me and
all I get is we can order them.

I've been tempted to go with the 35mm Mara Supremes, but have had such good
luck with the 40mm on dirt and with loads that I'm hesitant to change
course. The Nomads are appealing 'cause of the added width, but maybe
that's overkill. Maybe Riv will get the 40s on Monday... not going to hold
my breath.

my buddy had a mud flap turn underneath his Conti Grand Prix 4000 tire -
the tire chewed up the mud flap.

I've been tempted to go with the 35mm Mara Supremes, but have had such
good luck with the 40mm on dirt and with loads that I'm hesitant to change
course. The Nomads are appealing 'cause of the added width, but maybe
that's overkill. Maybe Riv will get the 40s on Monday... not going to hold
 my breath.

[RBW] Re: Wrong Kind of Tire Tread

2013-04-14 Thread Mike
I wouldn't use the 35mm Supremes on a loaded bike. I think Revolver might
have the 700x38 Schwalbe Marathons. Also check Clever Cycles and any places
that sell electronic bikes. Like Doug said, it's worth it to have
dependeble tires for a tour.

Shortly after I posted earlier today I decided that I've put enough energy
and time into worrying about tires and shelled out for the quick shipping
on a set of 40mm Supremes.
Tires... check.

[RBW] Re: Wrong Kind of Tire Tread

2013-04-14 Thread Mike Schiller
I'm super happy with my new 37 mm non-TG Pasela's. They measure at 37.2mm
on my 23mm rims. They have more tread depth than the 35mm and smaller
sizes of Paselas. Been running them at 40/45 and they are smooth and
straight running. And according to the BQ roll down test, as fast as
Hetres.

Andy:

Good call. I've used both 35 and 40 mm Marathon Supremes in all sorts of
conditions (loaded touring, off-road, etc) and prefer the 40s. Even though
they are only a bit bigger, the wear measurably longer. My last 40 mm
front went over 11,000 miles with no flats. Likely that's sheer blind
luck, never to be repeated.

Looks like tire thread. You got the last miles out of that one.

Well done. I'm always proud of wearing out a tire.
