Re: [RBW] Re: Wrong Kind of Tire Tread
I know what you're talking about--I've had this problem a couple of times with fatter (38+) tires. If I run the front pressure too low, it feels darty when turning--the front dives into the turn too quickly and feels unstable. Tracking in a straight line is affected, too--it comes off it's line too easily and feels unstable. Usually adding 5-10psi is enough to resolve it without too much impact on comfort... I think raising the pressure would deal with some of this (had similar issues with 33.3 JB's until I raised psi) but that negates the benefits of fat tires. Hey Andy, I say, if you can afford it, pick up a pair of 700x38 Schwalbe Marathons that Rivendell sells. They're durable and I have yet to get a flat. Sure, they're not as smooth as your Supremes but they're a great tire for riding a bike with a load. [RBW] Re: Wrong Kind of Tire Tread
Andy: New tires are cheap insurance. If I have any doubts about the condition of what's on the bike, I install new tires before any long tour. If the old ones have some life left in them, just change them out when you return home, and squeeze those last few miles out on home turf. A tour should be fun, and flat tires are a needless distraction. dougP On Sunday, April 14, 2013 1:01:41 AM UTC-7, Andy Smitty Schmidt wrote: A buddy and I are headed out for an 8-day ride around eastern oregon in less than a week. David: The Marathon Supreme in 40 mm starts to feel mushy around 40 psi, and I'll guess the MS is stiffer than the Nomads. I generally run 50 front / 60 rear, and add 10 psi for a tour load. Re: [RBW] Re: Wrong Kind of Tire Tread
I'm slowing working up the pressure... started @ 45/30, now @ 50/35. Probably going to flirt with 50/40 for next round. Marathons of any variety are definitely stiffer that the Nomads. I'd say the Nomads might even be a little flexier than Jack Browns. Possibly even in Eroica territory, but with wire beads. I want to try out a set of 35mm ones as well for just that reason! Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I've been holding out to buy another set of 40mm Supremes from Riv but their arrival keeps getting delayed and now I'm painted into a corner to pay for 2-day shipping to buy them elsewhere online... and I'm cheap. I imagine there's a LBS around portland that has them in stock but I've checked a couple shops near me and all I get is we can order them. I've been tempted to go with the 35mm Mara Supremes, but have had such good luck with the 40mm on dirt and with loads that I'm hesitant to change course. The Nomads are appealing 'cause of the added width, but maybe that's overkill. [RBW] Re: Wrong Kind of Tire Tread
Andy: Good call. I've used both 35 and 40 mm Marathon Supremes in all sorts of conditions (loaded touring, off-road, etc) and prefer the 40s. Even though they are only a bit bigger, the wear measurably longer. My last 40 mm front went over 11,000 miles with no flats. Likely that's sheer blind luck, never to be repeated. dougP On Sunday, April 14, 2013 5:05:22 PM UTC-7, Andy Smitty Schmidt wrote: Shortly after I posted earlier today I decided that I've put enough energy and time into worrying about tires and shelled out for the quick shipping on a set of 40mm Supremes. Well done. I'm always proud of wearing out a tire. On Sat, Apr 13, 2013 at 8:19 PM, dougP dougpn...@cox.net wrote: Looks like tire thread.
