[RBW] Re: dogs on Rivs

Your dogs are so cute! My work schedule doesn't work for having a dog
right now. I would love to have one, especially a dog that liked riding in
bike baskets :)

Well isn’t that the cutest and the sweetest? Your new pal is just adorable. I’m

Getting a new dog is the most exciting thing - a Christmas present, perhaps?

John’s Irish straps might be a good idea as well, but I will leave you with

[RBW] Re: Dogs on Rivs -- leash "wand"?

2018-07-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Apparently you're not meant to use the device to walk your small child.
Over 18, that's fine.

* Its not recommended the use of the walky dog for children under the age
of 18 years old or children weighing less than 45 kg/100 lbs. The use of
walky dog by children must be done under strict supervision of adults. *

[RBW] Re: Dogs on Rivs -- leash "wand"?

2018-07-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Update: I did indeed buy the "Walky Dog Exerciser", installed it, and have
used it. It works well, certainly better than holding the leash stiff-armed
in right hand while trying to control a fixed gear bike with only brake
lever on right side of bar. Perry (20-25 lb purebred mutt) is quick on the
uptake and quickly got used to keeping out of the pedal's and front tire's
way.

I installed on the right side, of course, to keep dog between bike and
curb, so I have to be careful not to trip over the hardware when
dismounting; must practice left-side dismounts.

The device is well made and the quick release works and appears secure.

I could not use the dropout attachment bracket because it appeared to be a
bad fit with track nuts and an axle near the end of the track end. But
vendor handled the return and refund very well.

Anyway, product recommended, at $60.

[RBW] Re: Dogs on Rivs -- leash "wand"?

2018-07-05 Thread Rick
I use the Walky Dog thing linked above for a medium-sized pit on my
Atlantis, but found the seat post thing to be less optimal than this:

https://www.amazon.com/Walky-Dog-Rider-Attachment-Accessory/dp/B009SMLTT2/ref=pd_bxgy_199_img_3?_encoding=UTF8_rd_i=B009SMLTT2_rd_r=9bba0a78-8080-11e8-8137-95af0e3aa013_rd_w=X7dwx_rd_wg=bF4ro_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER_rd_p=3914568618330124508_rd_r=HC7QTJ1C407DASAY35QF_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims_rd_t=40701=1=HC7QTJ1C407DASAY35QF

which puts him a bit further back and is considerably more stable.

I was much lampooned a while back for posting pics of my pvc dogwalker
invention, which went through the rear triangle of the nitto large rack and
had a lead off each side for my (now departed) golden retrievers. It
worked ok, but a dog on either side means you need quite a bit of space. In
truth, though both me and the mutt enjoy our rides, the biggest liability
of any of these devices is the random occurrence of squirrels.

Rick.

[RBW] Re: Dogs on Rivs -- leash "wand"?

2018-07-05 Thread John Coffey
The Bike Tow Leash is what I use. It works great, attaches low at the rear
triangle which is important for me with my 80 lbs athletic lab/hound.

http://www.biketowleash.com/

I bought it at the Dog Outdoors, they have lot's of good dog stuff and also
carry the other style which mounts high on the seat post but that would not
work for me and my hound.

https://www.thedogoutdoors.com/

I have it mounted on a mid eighties Miyata MTB with Bosco bars and a
setback post...the old adjustable one with lot's of setbackso I can put
all my weight on the back wheel and my foot on the outside pedal when I
need to ground him in place. But he has pulled me over from a stand still
when he was a bit younger, he is all muscle and was very enthusiastic as a
youngster...well come to think of it he still is the same in his middle age
but we are both smarter now. He loves it and it works wonders. Funny thing
is though that we also have an 11 lb terrier mix, the maker does not
recommend its use with small dogs but she insists and she loves it just as
much. It took some getting used to with the small dog but the clever device
really does work well at keeping the dog in a safe place.

[RBW] Re: Dogs on Rivs -- leash "wand"?

2018-07-05 Thread GAJett
Training, training, training. No wand needed.
Approached a woman on bike with dog on leash from behind on a paved trail
through a wild area. Large dog on right. About 15 feet ahead a large jackrabbit
broke cover from the right, crossing the trail pactically under the dogs nose.
I briefly wondered if I had my first-aid kit to deal with the certain
disaster... But the dog simply hesitated to watch the rabbit cross. It's all
about the training.
Cheers!

Not a direct response to your question but I have biked with my Golden on a
leash that I held onto while biking. The only bike I feel comfortable doing
this with is my Brompton. With the lower step over and just kind of more open
bike, it just felt safer should he try to do something other than trot along
beside me

[RBW] Re: Dogs on Rivs -- leash "wand"?

2018-07-03 Thread Glen
I used a walky dog with my last dog and she loved it. A 15 to 20 minute run
at about 10mph every morning kept her very happy (i.e. less destructive)
and forced me to get in some saddle time before work. She was a 65 pound
very active shepherd mix who wanted greet any other dog she saw so I had to
keep alert to any distractions. When I saw another dog it was interval time
as she wanted to run and see the other dog and I had to make the run more
interesting for her. As we passed the other dog she would try to run
perpendicular to the bike's path so be prepared to counter lean against the
pull.

It did do some cosmetic damage to the downtube sticker so I ended up
wrapping the tube with handlebar tape. You will want to use a harness that
allows the leash to attach between the dog's shoulder blades.

One other caution is you need to get out early in the day as the road gets
hot and paws don't take to heat.

I will train my next dog to use it, Molly loved it so much and got so

[RBW] Re: Dogs on Rivs -- leash "wand"?

2018-07-03 Thread WETH
Patrick,
I sent you a private email, but I will elaborate here. I own the Wally-dog
device in your Amazon link. I used it half a dozen times for a strong 70 lbs
Labrador. It worked well and as advertised. It kept him from getting under
wheel. Some training is needed in getting your dog to “heel” and “stop”
especially big dogs. In the end, my dog was too strong physically and stubborn
for me to safely use it with him. For a smaller, better trained canine, it
would work well. I clamped it to my seatpost with no problem.
Thanks,
Erl

Would prefer a device that has a removable "wand" with a small bracket that
can bolt to the seat or chain stay, so that the wand can be removed.

Has anyone used this? Will it clamp to a fattish seat or chain stay?

https://www.amazon.com/Walky-Dog-Exerciser-strength-Paracord/dp/B003OYIAW4?tag=tdt01-20

Of course, they don't bother to tell you the largest and smallest diameters
that the clamp will fit.

[RBW] Re: dogs on Rivs

2018-06-23 Thread Brad
I don't think I've ever seen someone cycling with a bag that's actually
made to carry dogs (or kids). Usually, they look like they're wedged into a
typical backpack or messenger bag. Neither the dog nor the rider
looks uncomfortable, but I'm sticking with the basket.

You mean like this? This just looks so uncomfortable to me. And it is too hot a
solution (at least in my estimation).

That said, I bought a used kid backpack off eBay and retooled it into a dog
backpack. All because on one hike when I lived in northern California, my dog
lay down on the trail and refused to go further and I carried him for an hour
in the fireman’s carry back to the car. I’ve used it once since then. Turns out

definitely helpful to be able to talk to my dog to keep her calm (or at

The animal is never wrong.

Also agreed. While have a good, solid carrier is important, riding with
your dog is 95% good training and conditioning.

Here in NYC, it's not uncommon to see people ride by with dogs stuffed in
their backpacks/messenger bags. It doesn't look comfortable for either
party, but I don't think it could be possible to get an uncooperative dog
in a backpack.

And finally, my dog would love the Buddyrider. I could give her head
scratches with my chin while riding!

Re: [RBW] Re: dogs on Rivs

2018-06-22 Thread Ray Varella
Jim S.
Some key things to consider when working with any animal to perform any task.
The animal is never wrong.
Set up the environment so the only possible outcome is for the animal to be
successful

If the dog isn’t ready to stay in the basket, the worst thing you can do is
force the issue. This can have unforeseen consequences.
I would start by desensitizing the dog to the basket before installing it on
the bike.
Depending on the dog, this could take one session or several days, don’t rush
it. Reinforce the closest approximation of your desired behavior. Do not
reinforce any undesired behavior.
Once the dog is willingly going in and out of the basket you can install the
basket on the bike.
Start by just straddling the bike and little by little, increasing the amount
of time.
Next go to a location with no distractions or safety hazards. An empty tennis
court or baseball field or indoor gym would be good.
Gradually raise the criteria.

Feel free to contact me offlist, you’re welcome to call.

Cheers,
Ray
