I use the Velox. It does have a habit of slipping forward off the
back so I run mine inside out and it stays in place. But I wouldn't
leave the bike out in the rain without additional cover.

Google bowl covers or saran bowl covers or plastic bowl covers and

Try something similar from Vermont Country Store. They're highly

[RBW] Re: leather saddle rain cover

2009-05-05 Thread Jim Cloud

I don't know if taking your fenders off your Quickbeam will work, but
I think putting fenders on my Riv works here in Tucson. We've had
1.66 of rain year-to-date.

I had a set of Honjo hammered fenders around that I'd taken off my
Paramount Moustache bike after I fitted some Campy Record sidepulls on
the bike. The rear brake Campy sidepull only fits with a drop-bolt
(originally used by Schwinn to fit this type of brake to Paramounts
that didn't have full frame customization for sidepulls). The drop-
bolt has a protrusion on the underside that leaves too little space to
fit a Honjo fender. So, I fitted the Riv up with the fenders (you
don't see many bikes with fender in Tucson, but I liked the way they
look).

[RBW] Re: leather saddle rain cover

2009-05-05 Thread J. Burkhalter

Hey Will,

In my experience, the Velox cover is a nice fit, but is not very
durable at all (outer covering began to flake off after a few uses).
The Aardvark is much more durable, but the fit is less than snug on a
B.17 and will not stay in place with a saddlebag attached to the
loops. For me, it's hard to beat the bonnet from Riv (or the nearly
identical one from Carradice) in terms of fit, durability, and stay-on-
the-saddleness. If you don't like to slip a plastic bag under yours,
you could try and seam seal those stitches on the cover with some seam
sealer (as used on tent floor seams and available from any self
respecting outdoor shop).

Hope this helps,

Also, I make sure to pull the sides of the bonnet down and under the edges of
the saddle, and then tie the eyelet straps together under the saddle.

The B-17 bonnet also works on a Selle Anatomica Titanico, although the
watershed version of Selle saddles doesn't really require much protection.

I use my butt as a saddle cover when I ride in the rain.

Works pretty well for me, as my B-17s have quite a few very wet miles
on them.

Obenauf's every 6 months or so helps too, I think.

I use the Velox. But if you use the Velox when you ride it likes to
slide off between your thighs when you stand up. I've lost a couple
like this. Though I try to avoid riding on saddle covers, sometimes
they end up living on the saddle for a few days...

So now, I put the otherwise-worthless Brooks cover over the Velox to
keep it on when I ride. I can then use the Brooks cover to store both
the Velox and the Brooks cover under the saddle when I'm not using
them. I stuff the velox into the nose of the brooks cover, roll it
up, stuff it under the saddle and lash the velcro tab around the
seatpost.

I have a couple Truant covers, which were the best, and as such, are
no longer made. But Jandd has a new one that appears to be nearly as
nice.

Wallbike sells the Jandd, the Velox, and the Brooks:

The Brooks cover is not so rain proof, as others have noted. I sprayed
mine thoroughly with a water repellent spray, but have yet to test it
out in rain after spraying it.
As to elegance- some might argue that something that functions
perfectly is innately elegant. ;)
I always keep one of those infernal plastic grocery bags in my Little
Joe saddle bag. Not only does it make a great rain cover (and the two
handle loops can tie below the saddle to cinch it in place) ...but it
also comes in handy for just about any odd thing you might have to pick
up or carry home. A surprise bonus of morels or a puffball perhaps? I
once found a baby painted turtle in the middle of the highway with no
water in sight, so I put him in the bag and later released him into a
pond with others of his kind. I sure didn't want turtle pee all over
the inside of my Little Joe! (hmmm...where else but a bike list would
you hear a sentence like that? ...and has anyone ever even uttered that
sentence before in the history of mankind?)

Over time, water seems to penetrate these too if you are out for
hours. The best thing that I have found is a use for recycling a
small plastic grocery bag. Wad it up inside the Brooks cover for
storage, use the integrated velcro strap to hold the cover and bag up
inside the nose of the saddle. Spread the plastic bag over the saddle
for protection and slip the Brooks cover over the top to hold
everything in place.
