The trip detailed in that link (Portland to close to Reno) was 10 days including a 1.5 rest stop in Ashland to see Hamlet and drink beer. I wish I knew exactly the route we took from Portland to hit the ACA route. It was lightly used highways that were spectacular. We camped the first night next to a stream with amazing canopy. Hey an Ashland question for all of you who have done tours in this area and stopped there. Is there a good place to stay for the touring cyclist? Was reservations needed? If one showed up on a Monday or Tuesday (which it's looking like I will) is it easier? How about tickets to the plays? I haven't been to Ashland since the late 80s and it was always busy then, can't imagine it's any easier. I've been happy staying at Oak Street Station BB. I've stayed there three times now, and always felt welcomed and fed. I just happened on it the first time; I arrived in Ashland looking for a place to stay, got a recommendation from the lodging recommendation place, called up Oak Street Station, and they said, I'm just baking cookies, what kind would you like? Sue and John, the proprietors, are also good about play recommendations. When I follow their recommendations, I like the plays. The one time I saw a play they didn't think too highly of, I didn't like it much either. They are perfectly happy to host touring cyclists, and they give you indoor storage for the bike. http://oakstreetstation.com/ On Fri, Aug 1, 2014 at 8:36 AM, Robert Kirkpatrick spiralc...@gmail.com wrote: Hey an Ashland question for all of you who have done tours in this area and stopped there. Re: [RBW] Re: week long tour ideas in Northern California or Oregon
Two thoughts/questions - completely unsubstantiated! 1) does Amtrak offer boxed bikes (or better, roll-on) service through to Dunsmuir (where, when running on the advertised, you'll arrive in the middle of night)? 2) I've heard Amtrak offers bus connections (w/ through-checked luggage i.e. bike box!), I think all the way up the 101 / Redwood Highway. If I understand correctly, some / a short train connection is all that's requires - e.g. Jack London Square to Emeryville. =- Joe Bunik Walnut Creek, CA On 7/31/14, Jim M. mather...@gmail.com wrote: The train is cool but Greyhound will take you from Oakland to Eureka. I would just second the idea of one way car rentals which can often get you exactly where and when you want to start and are pretty reasonable compared to Amtrak. I love the romantic notion of the train/bus thing but sometimes if you are on a schedule a rental car saves so much in the way of headaches. Good suggestions so far. My thoughts, either Eugene to Eureka, or Eureka to San Francisco. Both are about right for distance, with lots of small detour opportunities. I'd be nervous about relying on campgrounds during the peak family outing season of the year, but my understanding is that hiker-biker campsites usually have room for one more. Plenty of opportunities for discrete camping. Lost Coast is a GREAT idea. Eugene is served by Amtrak; Arcata-Eureka is not. For something different and easily accessed, there are possible loop opportunities out of Santa Rosa -- Cloverdale-ish -- Stewarts Point-ish -- then south-ish. But Eureka - Lost Coast is the best idea that I've heard. Peter -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. If you're contemplating doing the dirt part of the Lost Coast, pay attention to water. I'm pretty sure there is no water to be had south of Wailaki campground, until you get to Westport: no faucets, no creeks. At this time of year, with this drought, Usal Beach probably has no water other than sea water. [RBW] Re: week long tour ideas in Northern California or Oregon
Kurt: For a week, either Eurika / Arcata to the Bay Area or the Oregon coast. But they're each a week at a touring pace. I've done both feel that section of the northern California coast is more interesting than Oregon. Maybe because on my Oregon trips that was toward the end. Their both well worth doing. Oregon actually has better camping options as they have more state facilities with hiker-biker sites. NorCal is pretty un-populated (part of the draw) but not as extensive camping options. Lots of big trees provide plenty of cover if you need to be creative. Mike's one-way car suggestion is the easiest logistics provided you can get a decent rate. One-ways are dependent on the car agency's need to get surplus cars from one place to another, usually between airports. The airport at Eureka is small so not as many agency options. But check it out. I've done lots of one-ways and you have to make lots of phone calls to get the best deal. Bus service will mean boxing your bike on Greyhound. Amtrak is a lot more flexible. They have a policy that says bikes be boxed. But I've seen people talk to the driver wind up stuffing their bikes into the luggage bin after all the other luggage is loaded. A bit of a crap shoot. Up to the driver and today's load. Any time near the start of classes at Humboldt State they'll be busy. The time I used Greyhound we left Oakland mid to late afternoon, arrived in Arcata near midnight. We knew that going in, so no surprise. We kinda forget how much of California there is north of the Bay Area. IIRC it's around 300 miles Greyhound stops a lot. You meet some interesting characters on Greyhound. dougP On Wednesday, July 30, 2014 10:19:19 PM UTC-7, Kurt Manley wrote: I'm looking to do a 1 week solo tour on the proto Hunqapillar the week after next and could use some help picking a route. The Unknown Coast (Mattole Road to Honeydew, then over Panther Gap) is fantastic. And there is water at Honeydew, and AW Way is a good campground that has water. The route is steep, but I highly recommend that loop. I still have not done the Lost Coast. I planned to do it last September. I called the rangers about water, and was told there was no water at Usal Beach. My friend and I were going to do it anyway, and carry water, but then when we got to Eureka it started raining and raining and raining. Water wouldn't have been a problem any more, but we were warned that we'd find the roads impassable in the mud. [RBW] Re: week long tour ideas in Northern California or Oregon
Anne, I'm looking into some routes from that area. Thanks! Micheal, I just put an ad on craigslist looking for a ride, thank you! I was hoping to take the coast down to avoid the inland August heat but the train runs pretty far inland. If I get off at Dunsmuir it looks like a 6000 ft climb in one day in an area thats likely to be near 100 degrees to get towards the coast. More than I want to bite off. Maybe I'm wrong? I've just een [lottting routes on MApMyRide.com. Maybe someone knows a better way? If I get off in Oregon it might be too far to ride back to the bay area in a week? I'm probably good for around 60 miles a day. I like to stop and explore and would love to fish along the way. I'm open to different routes, areas, or modes of transpo to get up there (wherever that might be) but would love to hear from some folks who have toured in far Northern Cal or Oregon. Maybe I'll take the train further north, ride for a while then take it back. It just cuts into my riding time with that much train travel. If you have a good week long route that I can get to via train or bus that won't be crazy hot in August and don't mind sharing I'd love to hear from you. Thanks! [RBW] Re: week long tour ideas in Northern California or Oregon
So much good info here! I had not thought of one way car rental. That might be the ticket. I put a rideshare ad on craigslist, we will see what happens. Gabe messaged me off the list and said it's likely I wouldn't be able to offload my bike from the train in Dunsmuir as there is no luggage ramp there. Thanks so much for all the advice!!! Super helpful, please keep it coming.
