2018-11-13 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Looks a lot bigger than a 54!

P.S. Try as I might, I just can’t love a TIG-welded frame. Call me
old-fashioned, but a steel frame should be either lugged (preferred) or fillet
brazed (second choice). I do have one TIG-ed frame, and it’s just fine, but
it’s a bike that’s built for utility rather than beauty.

[RBW] Slightly OT: Route 66

2018-07-19 Thread masmojo
My son & I are a few days away from a road trip to the West Coast. We are
taking our bikes & my plan is to do some riding!!!
Heading out of Dallas I plan on hitting Palo Duro Canyon, Santa Fe, Sadona,
gradually making our way up to the Fresno area & then a few days in the bay
area. Including Repack, Rivendell, etc.
On the way back we might come back via Reno & Colorado way?
My question is; does anybody have a recommendations for trails, or routes?
Ideally 15 miles trail or 20 miles road without excessive climbing (unless the
view is really worth it!). We are doing this real loosey goosey, but generally
the plan is drive to town, get hotel, sleep, wakeup, ride then pack up & go to
next destination. Riding is more of an excuse to site see then serious biking.
Ideas?

2018-04-14 Thread iamkeith
I just stumbled on this video, and think many of you might enjoy it.
Especially if you tend to geek out on history & manufacturing techniques like I
do.

Takeaways:

I clearly need to find better a terminology than "bottom bracket" for
describing the spindle/bearing/cup assembly or cartridge that the crank arms
attach to. Funny how you adopt commonly accepted language over time, even when
you once intuitively knew that it was incorrect.

Likewise, is it accurate to say that "lugs" are simply "brackets" that are
investment cast?

Mud guards are important accessories, a frame is ready only after pinstiping, a
tool bag completes the bike, expert tire fitting girls and more, all from a
single factory.

[RBW] Slightly OT: Motorcycle Riding and Bicycles

2013-07-20 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I know there are a few motorcycle riders out there... I'm curious what kind
of motorcycles do bicycle people ride? I'm fairly new to motorcycling
(within the last 2 years), and I honestly can say I got interested in
motorcycling because of my appreciation of bicycling (and therefore all
things two-wheeled).

So forgive me for introducing motorized 2-wheelers into this forum, but I
think there are definite parallels between bicycling and motorcycling.

My favorite bike in my stable is my Bombadil (with front and rear racks and
Bullmoose bars, lights, and a saddle bag). This is a go-anywhere, do
anything (albeit at-a-slower-pace) kind of bike. I also have a 1986
Schwinn Cimmaron set up pretty much the same way as my Bomba... And I also
have other bikes for different purposes; a SimpleOne that's purely for
pedaling, mostly around town, a StumpJumper or 2, Rockhopper, (Dutch)
Gazelle, Raleigh Olympian, Nishiki Prestige... mostly lugged, Rivish-style
setups.) So my taste in bicycles tends to gravitate towards well-made,
practical and utlitarian bikes with a certain proven (and respected)
history.

As for motorcycles, my tastes run similar. I have two motorcycles, both
BMWs. The first is an older 1977 R60/7 Airhead, which is just a beautiful,
classic bike. When I ride it through New Hope PA, which on a typical
Sunday is overpopulated with Harleys, I get all kinds of looks and smiles.
My other bike is a 1993 K1100LT, which I like to think of as a "Riv-ish"
workhorse of a touring bike... It's a go-anywhere bike with plenty of
storage to haul enough gear for a 1-2-week getaway. It's equally
comfortable on back roads or highways, and its upright position gives you a
great command of the road ahead. It's a real pleasure to ride, and its
exactly what I would expect the perfect touring motorcycle to be.

Best thing about these bikes is that there are lots of them out there on
the used market for less money than many of us pay for bicycles, and these
classic motorcycles will (like our Rivendells) likely outlive us... I like
that...

So what are YOU riding?

Peace,
BB

Re: [RBW] Slightly OT: Motorcycle Riding and Bicycles

2013-07-20 Thread BSWP
I ride a 2000 BMW GS 1150, and before that rode a 1987 BMW R80. Are they
Riv-ish motos? Maybe, sort of, but don;t obsess on that. Bicycling and
motorcycling are entirely different, share much of the same qualities, and
utterly complement each other. Leaning into turns, looking through the
turn, knowing which brake to use, on and on... doing both makes you
appreciate doing each on its own, all the more. Like today, when I rode the
LongLow from Berkeley out to Walnut Creek to see an old friend, get some
bits at RBW, and ride back. Claremont and Fish Ranch, in both directions...

[RBW] Slightly OT... FS: Old Schwinn steel children's bike (24" wheels")

2012-04-10 Thread Rex Kerr
I know this is slightly off topic, but I suspect that people on this list
would appreciate this bike more than some random person on CL.

http://imgur.com/a/Fv8rq

I bought this bike some number of years ago, cleaned it up, and give it to
my kids... it's been through two kids since then and is looking a bit rough
again (mechanically it's fine, just showing surface rust/cable wear/etc
again), but the style is in line with the interests of many Rivendell
riders... since RivBike doesn't sell any kid's bikes this size I figured
that it was worth posting here. My kids really enjoyed this bike and would
always come back and tell me how much better it rode than their friends'
bikes, and they used to manage as much as 20 mile days on it. It's only
because they've both outgrown it that it's for sale.

39 cm seat-tube, 45.7 cm top-tube, ~66 cm standover

The bike is in Folsom, CA (near Sacramento). I'd rather not ship it, but if
you're near an Amtrak station they make it fairly easy to do, so I'll
consider it. I can deliver it to the SF bay area, but it might be a few
months before I go next.

Price? Well, I don't really know what to say that it's worth, but I'll
consider any serious offers.

[RBW] Slightly OT: "Renaissanced" Bicycle Google Group

2010-10-14 Thread Bryan @ Renaissance Bicycles
While Riv-ish pursuits occupy a lot of our time at Renaissance
Bicycles, we are also interested in tinkering with and upgrading
classic bikes. Anything from 650B conversions to reviving old Raleigh
3-speeds. These bikes may not always be the most "desirable" bikes to
the masses (just like Rivendells), we see the untapped potential in
vintage beater forgotten by others.

And based on the number of questions we receive regarding "how-to's",
we suspect there are enough interested "renaissancers" out there to
provide a proper community. Hence, we have created the "Renaissanced"
Bicycle Google Group:

http://groups.google.com/group/renaissanced-bicycle-group

This group is not intended for just our customers, but rather for
anyone interested in reviving a classic bike with modern components.
In other words, it is a place for comradery, assistance, and a shared
interest in reviving classic bicycles. Likewise, it is not intended or
restricted to one type / category / model of bicycle -- everyone and
everything is welcome.

Visit, join, contribute.

[RBW] Slightly OT: S24O in Adventure Cycling

2009-12-22 Thread doug peterson
In the current issue of Adventure Cycling magazine, Aaron Teasdale
writes about a series of S24O rides this last summer. As a resident
of Missoula, he can ride out his back door and be in the forest in 25
minutes. IIRC, Rivendell had an S24O article in the RR years ago.
While probably not a unique concept, ACA now has mention of it on
their website as well. Teasdale takes his kids on a couple of the
overnights and they have a wonderful time. The Rivendell ripple
continues to expand.

I think riv should just put out catalogs more often and the reader
more regularly - or make the reader more like the VO blog.

I think Fisher's product clout comes from having a much more serious
marketing budget from Trek.

I think breezer's marketing only picked up in the last year since fuji
bought them out.

I think it would be pretentious for anyone to call themselves the
"father of all-rounding".

[RBW] Slightly OT: The Men Behind the Machines / Marketing

2009-12-22 Thread Bryan @ Renaissance Bicycles
As it so happens, I came across both the new Breezer website (via
Alan's post about his latest photo adventure --
http://www.ecovelo.info/2009/12/21/breezer-catalog-and-website/) and
the new Garry Fisher catalog on the same day.

What I found interesting was the striking difference between the
marketing of these two "fathers of mountain biking":

Gary Fisher's words and images are all over the Fisher catalog --
http://fisherbikes.com/gary -- and he kinda looks like somebody's
crazy uncle who takes his fashion cues from Hawaii Five-O.

In stark contrast, on the Breezer website there is not much mention of
Joe Breeze -- http://www.breezerbikes.com/index.php/about-joe-breeze.html
-- who (based solely on the website photo) could easily pass as your
friendly tax accountant.

Like Grant / Rivendell, both men are really big proponents and
advocates of Utility / Urban / Practical / All-Rounder kind of biking,
but I would guess that your average cyclist would not tie any of these
names to cycling for transportation / utility.

So, this leads me to a bunch of questions (which I will limit to 3-
ish):

(1) Do you think Rivendell should include a little more Grant Petersen
in their catalog?
(2) How much of Fisher / Breezer's product clout comes via their
perceived personal "legend"?
(3) To my knowledge, there really is no "father of all-rounding" ...
should it be Grant / Riv? What about Rene Herse or Alex Singer?

Thanks for letting me put my musings into a somewhat coherent form,

Bryan

[RBW] Slightly OT - riding with a herniated disk

2009-10-21 Thread nathan spindel

Forgive me if this is too far off topic, although it's related to
Rivendell's concerns of proper bike comfort, fit, etc.

After cycling 100-200 miles/week for 4 months on my Romulus I managed
to get a herniated disk. I'm not positive it was caused by cycling,
but it seems quite likely (my doctor thinks so too).

In my research I've found that some people with this condition
continue to cycle. After not riding for the first two injured months,
I began riding a little bit to keep sane and have found my pain
sometimes lessens while riding. Two doctors I've consulted with said
it might be okay to cycle if I'm okay with it, but they seem hesitant.

I'd like to hear any anecdotal stories you have about this (or
healing/treatment as it pertains to cycling). I really have grown to
love riding bikes and would hate to stop (but of course I'll stop when
appropriate). Feel free to reply off-list.

[RBW] Slightly OT: Washing Wool Knickers

2009-10-06 Thread Larry Powers

It's an amazing day. I just found my old Woolrich wool knickers. I think
these are early to mid 80's, so well over 20 years old. I bought them when
they were discontinued and only used them a couple of times before my middle
aged spread rendered them unwearable. I tired them on today and they fit
again.

I would like to clean them. They are 85% wool and 15% nylon and say dry clean
only. My daughter says wash them by soaking in the tub with her super special
wool cleaner (she weaves and knits and only works with wool). I wash all my
riding clothes including my Wooly Warms on the delicate cycle in my front
loading machine using Ivory Snow. Of course all washing is in cold water.

Any opinions on the best approach?

Wool Rules.

[RBW] Slightly OT: Any LBSes have White Ind. Pedals yet?

2009-04-09 Thread JoelMatthews

So far my LBS does not have any of the new White Ind. pedals in
stock. The on line merchants who carry White products do not seem to
have them either.

At least one blogger has flickered photos of his wonderful White Ind.
pedals. I am thinking perhaps they are shipping to the West Coast
first?

In case you have not seen them, here is a link:

http://urbanvelo.org/white-industries-pedal-sneak-peak/

They would look great on a Riv. And I think match well with the way
most of us ride.

I think the Whites will work great on my city bike. It currently has
a wonderful set of MKS RX-1s fitted with a Bruce Gordon half clip.
The MKS look good and have very smooth bearings. They are just a tad
small for my size 10 feet. Whites look a bit larger and are designed
for half clips. Guess I need to be more patient.
