[RBW] Test post: I'm RBW Owners Bunch!

2023-09-19 Thread RBW Owners Bunch
It looks like the latest Google glitch is that everybody's handle is "RBW
Owners Bunch", at least on my browser. It seems to be happening partially
on iBob also. How do you like your new username?

Re: [RBW] Test Ride Opportunities in the Midwest (Madison, WI)

2023-07-03 Thread Camden Powell
I'd be interested in buying either a 52 or *maybe *a 59, but I figure these
bikes are so unique that any test ride would do me good, even if it's not
my size.

Hey folks,

[RBW] Test ride 58cm Atlantis or Hunqapillar in New York City?

2018-01-21 Thread John W
Thanks Michael. I’m actually looking specifically to test ride the Atlantis (or
Hunq) to test the frame and fit qualities. I’d be a 58 in the Atlantis or
maybe an equivalent 53 in the Hunq for starters.

I have the 55 Appaloosa. I'll let you test ride it. The Hunq runs smaller. A 53

2018-01-20 Thread John W
Leaning toward the Atlantis, but Hunq curious, too. I'm 6' tall, mostly
torso, and I think a 58cm is a good compromise for a test ride.

If anyone has one I'll bring along coffee or beer in return for a couple of
laps in the park.

[RBW] Test Ride Tire Rentals in the Bay Area: Standard Rat Trap Pass

2015-09-30 Thread Bill Lindsay
So, in a fit of enthusiasm I bought a set of Standard Rat Trap Pass tires
for my Bosco Bike. Those of us who think a Bosco Cockpit is antithetical
to performance, might think it was stupid to buy $60 tires for a Bosco
Bike. But, hey, I'm a tire guy. I love buying tires and I think every
bike deserves nice tires.

Anyway the performance benefits for the riding I do on that Bosco bike were
noticeable but admittedly small. As a side-effect I suffered a big
usability hit. My Bosco Bike goes on the roof rack every morning and gets
ridden home every night. So the front wheel comes off and goes back on 5
times a week. My Bosco Bike has roller-cam brakes and steel fenders.
There is no good solution for getting the brakes open enough to clear the
2.3" tires. I have a plan for how to correct things, but it will take some
significant modification of the front brake setup. I'm going to push that
off to Winter Project land.

So, in the meantime, I will revert back to my Soma New Express 1.75" tires.
I will then have sitting in my tire box a pair of nearly new Rat Trap Pass
Standard tires. So, if you are in the Bay Area and want to try them out,
let me know. RBW listers can rent them for free (within reason). I do
have a list of tools I need for my new career as Team Mechanic for El
Cerrito HS, so if you want to sponsor a tool, I would accept. A voluntary
(tax deductable) donation to "Friends of El Cerrito Music" would help fund
the band and would also be appreciated in lieu of rental charges. I'm
thinking something like $10 per week is a decent recommended donation. I'm
not particularly interested in selling them outright, because I do expect
to eventually having a setup solution on my bike. If you really just want
to try them out for free I won't bad-trip you, I promise.

Anyway, if you want to try out Rat Trap Passes, let me know.

[RBW] Test ride Sam in Dallas?

2015-09-11 Thread Anne Paulson
I have an online friend who is currently riding an upright bike (some
Trek model, I don't know), riding 5 times a week, and wants to upgrade
to a faster bike. She's willing to spend a good chunk of money, $2000
or so. I'm figuring a Sam might be a good choice (you can get a built
up Sam for $2K, right?). Anyone have a smaller sized Sam in the
Dallas area that they're willing to offer up for a test ride?

As with most people we advise, she probably won't end up with a
Rivendell bike even though she'd be better off with one. But at least
I gave her the heads-up to make sure the bike she picks allows decent
width tires. So that's something. I was looking at bikes sold by
Richardson Bike Mart, which seems to be a good Dallas shop. There's
this Trek 7.7 FX, that's supposedly a hybrid bike that "rockets along
roads, cruises along bike paths, and even hits dirt roads." The thing
is shod with 25mm tires! Why?

-- Anne Paulson

It isn't a contest. Enjoy the ride.

[RBW] Test ride Sam in Dallas?

2015-09-11 Thread Pondero
The best I can do is a Quickbeam or a Hilsen in downtown Fort Worth. Both are
56cm. If either of these would be helpful, I'd be willing to meet her
somewhere.

Re: [RBW] Test Fit Rides

2015-02-23 Thread Kenneth Cote
Good Day.

I did the second test drive on the 62 Sam Hillborne this time. Nice fit.
Will go with the Bosco handlebars. It is being put together for me as I
speak. Now if my payment to the CC company goes through Riv can get their
money I will will be biking to work. Thanks to John in Portland for his
help guidance, and to you all for an informative and entertaining site.

62 Hillborne. This is because the Hillborne's top tube slopes up 6 degrees

Using Albatross's adds some flexibility in the sizing.

 I have a 93 cm PBH, and I enjoy my just-a-hair-too-big-for-me 62 cm
Hillborne with Albatross bars. It's pretty amazing actually.

I once rode a 67 AHH for a few minutes, and it is too big for me. A 65 cm
AHH is just about perfect for me, and my 64 cm Rambouillet is an ideal drop
bar bike for my size. Obviously, I'm only giving you some crude numbers to
compare to, since we only have PBH for comparison.

Have fun! You're gonna settle on a great bike.

Re: [RBW] Test Fit Rides

2015-02-01 Thread John Bennett
Dear Ken (and anyone in The Great NW),

The 62 Sam has arrived from RBW HQ in Walnut Creek and is now part of the
Portland Test Center Fleet, along with a 55 and a 58, and every size of
Cheviot (50-55-60).

The 62 is set up with Bosco bars, a B67 saddle, and fenders. Extremely
comfortable and practical for winter riding.

Email me (john-at-rivbike dot com) if you want to come by for a spin. As
Ken will tell you, it's mostly our garage at this point, but we're sprucing
it up in the coming weeks.

Cheers,

John

more seat post. I ride both with Alba's but used to have mbars on the QB

Bigger, up to a point, really is better.

Good luck and I'm sure John will get you fitted just right.

Re: [RBW] Test Fit Rides

2015-01-31 Thread James Warren

When one of the 6-degree sloping bikes is the right size for the rider, it is
going to naturally show more seatpost than a 2-degree sloping bike would when
fit right to that same rider. 62 cm Hunq and 66 cm Quickbeam both being the
right size for the same rider fits the math perfectly. The Hunq's top tube
slopes 6 degrees and the Quickbeam's top tube slopes 2 degrees.

[RBW] Test rode the 48cm Hunq'a

2010-05-03 Thread Ginz
Hello all,

I stopped by to visit Rivendell on Thursday while passing through on
my San Fran vacation. I was lucky enough to take the 48cm gray and red
Hunqapillar for a spin around the parking lot. I'm 5'4 and I'd say my
76cm PBH (barefoot) was about as low as I'd want to be on that bike.
Any smaller and I'd probably have choose the Atlantis. The bullmoose
bars had a great, comfortable, heads-up feel. I'll have to think hard
about whether to replace my techno hardtail with a Hunq'a...

Is anyone planning to use a Hunqapillar for touring? I'm interested to
hear about your setup and plans.

Eric

[RBW] Test rode a Sam today

2010-04-28 Thread rcnute
Dang, that bike was fun! It really shone on a brief patch of gravel/
dirt. I was sorely tempted to buy it right there.

I also rode a Soma Saga. Nice enough but the Sam was the better
handling bike by far.

Steel's what you want for a messenger bike. Weight. Big basket up front.
Not cardboard with some crazy aramid shit wrapped around it, weighs about as
much as a sandwich.

Nice work, Jim. Good spread o' pix. I was wondering f you have the time to
expand a bit on your impressions of the Foy and the Amos? I've had my eye
on a Foy for a some time. How do you think it would ride with straight bars
and thumbies, or even Bullmoose and thumbies?

I'm not sure I could definitively extrapolate to straight bars - my bias
would be towards something with a bit of sweep - the new bullmoose bars have
an excellent position for my wrists - a good chunk of sweep.

The albatross bars were a bit enlightening. I've ridden moustache bars and
find there's a specific angle below horizontal where I can position my
wrists comfortably and pull up pretty strongly for hills. The albatross
bars were set in precisely the correct angle for me. Then I was able to use
the forward curve to mimic a straight/mtb bar position.

It seems like I move my hands a lot more now than I used to - not sure I'd
ever be comfy with just a straight bar again.

Hope that's of some help,

- J

[RBW] Test Ride-O-Rama

2010-03-28 Thread cyclofiend
Went over to the RBWHQL to pick up my Rich-built QB replacement
wheel, and had a grand time bumping into folks, chatting with Grant,
meeting Harry in person (FINALLY!) and enjoying a series of loops and
circuits around the local streets on a variety of bicycles. Sam
Hillborne, Betty Foy, SOMA San Marco (Amos), and the Roadeo. Each had
their personality, but all had the Rivendell Ride. Also got to check
out the newly painted Hunqapillar Prototype frame, looking resplendent
in grey and orange.
