Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell riders use for tire pumps on the road?

2014-01-18 Thread Eric Norris
I generally favor frame-mounted pumps for high pressure tires. Various brands,
but Blackburn usually makes a good product.

However, I've had good results with the Quicker mini pump. It will pump up a
high pressure tire, and with a lower-pressure, high volume tire it works even
better. Fits easily into a seat bag to keep the frame free of unnecessary
clutter.

Rando tip: wrap reflective tape around your frame pump for extra nighttime
visibility.

Much like Joe Bernard, I hate carrying frame pumps in the along-the-top tube

most other alternatives.

As long as I can find an alternate position for a full size pump (behind the

size pump with me.

If I can't make an alternate position work for a frame pump, I'll toss a Road

A bike with long chain stays, like all Rivs, fit frame pumps pretty well
behind the seat tube. I use a shorter Zefal HPx2 on my old Nashbar (by
Maruishi) and Topeak Master Blasters on the Road and Ram. I do use a Road
morph with the little presser foot on the Saluki, but I've tied it to the
rear rack using a bungie cord.

Frame pumps. On every bike. For all the reasons set out on pages 110-111 of

2014-01-17 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I use the Topeak road morph. It pumps a lot of air, and the most
important thing for me is it has an extendable hose for the valve.
Alot of pumps including frame pumps connect directly to the valve, and
as you pump you can put stress on the valve. I've broken a tube that
way when I wasn't careful pumping. The road morph has a rubber tube
connecting to the valve and a little foot peg, so you pump down like a
normal floor pump.

I put the pump in the 3rd water bottle position under the downtube, so
it's easy to carry along with the bike.

I hope you don't need to use any pumps on the road! :).

#1: the old, all black HPX.

#2: the Planet Bike Roadie.

#3: the Lezyne Alloy Drive -- very good for high volume, low pressure, at
least, very good for a mini. The hose makes it much easier than many other
minis. It works with very fat tires (60+ mm, 20 psi) and medium ones (35
mm, 50 - 60 psi).

But the ne plus ultra, IME, for tires narrow and fat is the older, all
black HPX.

Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell riders use for tire pumps on the road?

2014-01-17 Thread Eric Platt
Varies between an old HPX, a Topeak frame pump and the Mountain Morph. The
only reason the Hillborne doesn't have a Morph is the double top tube.
Would work better with the 38 to 40 mm tires on that bike.

Nowadays, with the folks I know, 40mm is positively svelte for a tire.

[RBW] What do Rivendell riders use for tire pumps on the road?

2014-01-17 Thread C.J. Filip
Topeak Road Morph. Wish it would fit into hbar bag but for now it'll do and
pumps up my high pressure road tires with ease as well.
