Great ride report. If goose poop is the worst thing on a ride... it was a
pretty good day. Thanks for sharing.

[RBW] Coffeeneuring on A Stolen Clem

2019-01-31 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
1. You give new meaning to “Ride it like you stole it!”
2. You need friends with proper clothing.
3. Achieve #2 by informing them there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad
clothing.
4. Great scarf! I have to recalibrate my expectation that a scarf in January
might not be heavy wool knit.
5. Thanks for another great vicarious urban adventure, in which goose poo in
January was a factor. Still scratching my head. Grin.

Re: [RBW] Coffeeneuring on A Stolen Clem

2019-01-31 Thread Patrick Moore
When I saw the headline, I thought that a friend's Clem had been stolen.
Then I began reading and thought that you had borrowed the Clem and that
*it* was stolen. Now I see that all that happened is that you borrowed the
Clem and had a good ride. Relief all around.

Personally, I keep a couple of Rivs so that I can steal one from myself if
I get tired of the other one. I've gotten so used to setting up my bikes
just so that I don't enjoy others' bikes as much (tho' Ryan Watson's old
Herse felt so good when I first got on it that I bought it).

I've developed good relationships with my most frequented area stores over
the years and they seem quite happy to let me roll a bike around in place
of a shopping cart. I did ask a couple of employees at the nearest, and
newest, Sprout's if I could do that; they were taken aback (I was on foot,
having come in a car) but said, "Sure, why not?" I try to do this only when
the business is not too busy, though.

How cold is "cool" where you are?

Thanks, Andy and Lum. Andy, one of the ways I estimate temperature is the sound
of the snow underfoot. I’m not a sound engineer, so I’m unsure of the technical
way to describe it, but the “sparklier” it is the colder it is. -20˚F sounds
very different from -10, 0, 10, 20, and 30. When I’m able to confirm with a
thermometer, I’m accurate to the closest five degrees.

Lum, here we just call it weather, no crisis. Grin.

[RBW] Coffeeneuring 4-7

2017-11-27 Thread Deacon Patrick
Hey Stephen,

I like the Gunflint for 1) the big side pockets; 2) it is soft bottomed, so
when I bikepack I can load it less, squich it forward, and carry my tent,
sleeping bag, and pad on top of the rack nice and solid (strapping it atop a
SaddleSack is floppy and I never figured out how to change that). The top opens
up wide and is a non factor.

I have my doubts how long it will survive. The panniers have a few holes in
them for a year of use, whereas my TourSacks have no holes from multiple years
of rougher trips. Weather (snow, sleet, rain) is a concern as the closure isn’t
as well thought out as the SaddleSack. I just keep stuff in there that is fine
getting wet, but it has been fine so far. I’ve debated the medium SaddleSack
and if it would leave me enough room to strap on my tent et al.

Hope that helps.

Patrick

Patrick,
I attempted to send you a private message but I apparently have no idea as
to how to accomplish that. That being said I thought I'd just ask on the forum.
Question: How do you like the Frost River Gunflint? Pros? Cons? How does it
compare to the medium Saddlesack? (If you've had experience with the sack). It
seems to me that the Saddlesack would be easier to load/unload with the large
opening. It seems to me that the inner flap of the Saddlesack is "more thought
out" than the Gunflint. It seems to me that that the saddle attachment points
at the far rear of the Saddlesack would be superior to the mid-of-the-bag
saddle attachment of the Gunflint. But then, the Gunflint just looks WAY
cooler! Anywho, just wanted to hear/read your two cents.

Re: [RBW] Coffeeneuring Ride on Redwood.

2015-10-05 Thread David Banzer
I had some concerns when I was riding with Hetres (40mm or so, didn't give
them a chance to stretch) and recently when I tried the 1.75" Pari Motos
(actual 38/39mm). Mostly just brushing a shoe when I forgot going around
tight corners, usually at a slow speed. With the VR Speedsters (actual
47mm) there really isn't a concern at all. I think I figured it's the same
overall diameter as a 700x28c tire.

Re: [RBW] Coffeeneuring Ride on Redwood.

2015-10-05 Thread David Banzer
During the conversion of the Redwood, I finally came to the realization
about overall wheel diameter. Granted, larger tires will have more tire
drop so that will affect overall bb height during riding. However, consider
the overall wheel diameter of a 700c wheel with a skinny tire - 700cx23mm
is the same overall diameter as 650bx42mm. It'd be silly to run a 700x23
tire on a bike with clearances for larger tires, but I doubt many would be
concerned about bb height as the original wheel size is preserved.
In short - try it out for sure.
I actual prefer the handling of this bike with the 47mm tires rather than
the 40mm tires as it gets the overall wheel diameter closer to what the
bike was designed for.

Re: [RBW] Coffeeneuring Ride on Redwood.

2015-10-05 Thread David Banzer
Redwood fit 35mm 700c tires, could possibly squeeze in fenders, but it'd be
really tight. I believe it would fit Compass' Barlow Pass tires just fine.
I was content with it set up as a 700c road bike, but I had parts on hand
to experiment with. I'm riding it a whole lot more with the 650b wheels,
and will leave it like this indefinitely. I have SKS fenders as well that
need to be installed. Plenty of room for those.

I have a custom Riv with 80 mm bb drop and 177,5 mm cranks converted to 650B
(Pari-Motos, 39-40 mm). No long stretch to the ground, but no problem. You can
always go back to your old wheels, but don´t hesitate to try.
