Re: [RBW] slipping Silver shifter

2011-09-12 Thread Rex Kerr
Whoa... After hearing all of the praise heaped upon the Silvers I thought I
was the only one suffering this problem. Seeing the response here makes me
feel less alone. I've been having severe difficulty shifting the rear of my
AHH since day one (and I've been doing friction, and only friction, for
years)... I was going to stop in at Riv to ask them to look at the shifter
(since I've basically swapped every other part with my other bikes trying to
find the source of my problem), but they were closed the Saturday that I was
in the area for the Labor day holiday. I'm even more convinced now that I
just ended up with a bad shifter. :-(

Re: [RBW] slipping Silver shifter

2011-09-12 Thread Brian Hanson
There is a good way to set up the Silvers - beeswax on the screw threads -
only put grease on the inner silver washer - not the threads or anything
else - scuff up the plastic washer a bit for some friction. I still feel
that the derailleurs make a BIG difference. The ones I have tried with
lower spring tension seem to work really well with friction shifters. My
newer model road derailleurs have never worked too well.

YMMV

Re: [RBW] slipping Silver shifter

2011-09-08 Thread Horace
I had this problem with the silver shifter on the downtube, no matter
how much I tightened it.

I finally traced the problem to the fact that the square-hole washer
that sits on the frame was slightly too thick for my shifter boss. I
sanded it down a little bit with a Dremel tool, and that solved the
problem.

Re: [RBW] slipping Silver shifter

2011-09-08 Thread William
The Suntour Sprint, which the Silvers copied, came in the box with two
different thicknesses of flat washer that slides onto the boss right BEFORE
you slip the shifter onto the boss. There's a 'standard' thickness one, and
an extra one that is slightly thicker. Some bosses are a hair longer, so
the stack up of the shifter assembly is a hair too short, even when
tightened completely. The slightly thicker washer corrects that.

The Silvers I assume do not come with a choice of base flat washer, so
you'll need to replace it or augment it. I'd pull off one shifter, get that
base flat washer, and find a replacement at the hardware store that matches
the inside diameter and the outside diameter and is EITHER a little thicker
(a couple tenths of a mm will be fine) or is very very thin. If you find
thicker ones, replace. If you find very thin ones, add them in.

Re: [RBW] slipping Silver shifter

2011-09-08 Thread Brian Hanson
I had the same problem. After trying two sets of Silver shifters on both
bar ends and down tube mounts. I finally replaced my modernish DuraAce
front (7800) road triple derailleur with an older XT circa 1989ish. Fixed
the slipping problem, and the shifter is smooth and light. Big difference.
My observation is that the modern derailleur has a heavier spring and pulls
the shifter more. Tightening it down hard doesn't work.

What modern front derailleurs have a moderate spring tension/leverage?
