Re: [RBW] Ever get pulled over by police while on your bike?

2020-09-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Long ago I rode carefully, as usual, through a 4-way stop and got lights
and siren. I was annoyed; said, pompously: "I've been riding in urban
traffic for over 30 years (I think I was 35 at the time and I was 11 when
my parents first let me ride to school downtown -- but in sleepy if crowded
Bangalore of the mid 1960s); but I can't blame the cop, who wouldn't be as
aware of how safe this is on a bike, compared to a car, as a cyclist.

A pretty woman cop used her radar gun on me and yelled, "19!" ... but I was
married at the time.

I have to say that I've been let off enough times by cops with warnings
after Idaho stops or crashing yellows in cars to have gotten away with more
than I paid for.

When I was in grad school in St. Louis I learned to call that a St. Louis
stop. Can’t believe they actually ticketed you vs. a warning. Good luck
when this comes before a judge.

Re: [RBW] Ever get pulled over by police while on your bike?

2020-09-13 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
My wife, daughter, and I were coming back from a friends's house late one
Sunday night this past February in Brooklyn. My daughter and I were on our
Xtracycle and my wife was on her bike. Two cops pulled all three of us over
for running a red light—it was 10p and no cars on the road and we did an
Idaho stop (slowed down, looked all ways, and took a right on red, which is
illegal in NYC). The cops were adamant that they were pulling us over for
our own safety b/c there had been a spate of bicycle-car collisions in the
neighborhood recently. I mouthed off about that being cars' fault rather
than cyclists'. The cops were pretty much mum but still gave both my wife
and I summonses that totaled about $490. (I sarcastically asked why they
weren't giving my daughter one too; probably not a good look but I was
pretty upset at the ridiculousness of the situation.) We're currently
appealing and b/c of covid the case has been pushed back to next March. So
it will be over a year since the actual incident. Fingers crossed the judge
will throw it out or at least reduce it.

Re: [RBW] Ever get pulled over by police while on your bike?

2020-09-12 Thread Bill Schairer
I got pulled over with siren and lights in St Louis County while commuting
to work. I was riding on a frontage road that had a nice downhill ramp onto
a state highway (not freeway). The cop had somebody pulled over on the
shoulder of the ramp and I blew by pretty fast, for a bike, and must have
surprised him. Shortly thereafter I heard the siren and pulled over
expecting him to go by but he was pulling me over!? He claimed it was
illegal for me to be on that ramp (I can’t remember, it may have been
shared with a ramp off the freeway) which was nonsense - I rode it every
day. Anyway, he did not cite me.
