My wife, daughter, and I were coming back from a friends's house late one Sunday night this past February in Brooklyn. My daughter and I were on our Xtracycle and my wife was on her bike. Two cops pulled all three of us over for running a red light—it was 10p and no cars on the road and we did an Idaho stop (slowed down, looked all ways, and took a right on red, which is illegal in NYC). The cops were adamant that they were pulling us over for our own safety b/c there had been a spate of bicycle-car collisions in the neighborhood recently. I mouthed off about that being cars' fault rather than cyclists'. The cops were pretty much mum but still gave both my wife and I summonses that totaled about $490. (I sarcastically asked why they weren't giving my daughter one too; probably not a good look but I was pretty upset at the ridiculousness of the situation.) We're currently appealing and b/c of covid the case has been pushed back to next March. So it will be over a year since the actual incident. Fingers crossed the judge will throw it out or at least reduce it.
