Re: [RBW] My Riv-ish Burley Tandem Build

2014-07-15 Thread L Mark Finch

I concur that it’s older than a ’93. My wife and I bought ours when we got
married in 1993, and the graphics are different and it has 700s. The only
things on ours that are different from stock are the seats, tires,
handlebar tape and rear rack. I do like the idea of mustache bars, since
that's what I have on two other bikes.

My Thanksgiving '13 week C-list impulse buy and supposed 'winter' project
is finally rolling in style! I'm rocking dual Moustache bars, original
Nitto's for the captain (me) and flipped XO-3 MTB diameter ones for my
wife. That is newbaum's over one layer of inner tube, 2 coats of shellac
(done yesterday so the color is as brilliant as it'll ever be! Other
Riv-ish details include the MUSA steel frame of course, Suntour Barcon's
(the whole bike came w/ a Suntour XC group), dual Brooks Flyer saddles and
some Nitto stems. Last weekend was the ~18 mile WOD trail shakedown ride
with unwrapped bars and today we did ~27 miles to Mount Vernon and back via
the Mount Vernon Trail and Old Town Alexandria. Both were unqualified
 sucesses.

I'm still getting used to the handling and braking responsibilities for
two, my trail etiquette today could have used some fine tuning but I'll get
smoother. I was impressed how well the bike responded to heavy pedalling
up some of the sharp, short hills on the way to MV. I'm hoping to get in
alot of tandem riding for the rest of this year!

Re: [RBW] My Riv-ish Burley Tandem Build

2014-07-15 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Mark,

Great looking tandem! Thanks for sharing the picture and helping with the
dates. I like the bend in your fork, much nicer looking than the straight
one on mine. The basic frame design does look extremely similar though
including the continuous bend chain/seat stay. I guess that must be
straight guage tubing?!?

I'm really thrilled with ours, and the moustache bar build with brooks
flyer saddles has opened up the comfort considerably. Now I just need to
rig some kind of overhead hooks on a pully so I can store it in the garage
with less impact to floor space.

Looks fantastic! How do you both find it riding together?

Having tried moustache and albastache upside down, I'm also curious how your
wife likes her wrists, elbows being bent inward rather than outward?

With abandon,

Re: [RBW] My Riv-ish Burley Tandem Build

2014-06-30 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Thanks Patrick! The bike rides very nicely. We have only sampled two tandems
so it's hard to be very authoritative... The size seems very good which is
hugely important. I can easily and safely take one hand off the bars to adjust
or grab the water bottle without much thought for stability which is nice.

Not sure if it's the greater combined rider weight or the narrower (32mm) tires
but we take bumps alot harder than in my single bikes. Leaning and steering
with the hips is going to have to develop over time as we learn to anticipate
each others behavior.

For now it seems like we spend a bit more time either 'to fast' or 'to slow'
with fleeting, in sync, powerful and rhythmic middle areas. It feels great to
ride when we're chugging along a near flat section that has gentle or no curves.

As for my wife's hand-elbow angle i'm not sure, I'll have to have someone get a
picture of us riding to see how she's using the bars better. We're still
playing around with angle and extension on her bars.

You definitely could be right about the age... I've not found alot of good
information about years and product listings for Burley. On my ride today we
did have a great conversation with a couple who recognized the burley and told
us about touring the world with their kids on a pair of burley duets... Very
friendly people.
