Re: [RBW] Re: Practical Racing

2013-09-16 Thread Robert Barr
Patrick, my commuting colleagues and I have a variation of your race that
we do fairly often. On stormy days we watch the storms coming in on weather
radar and time our departure for home based on the storm arrival. We almost
always procrastinate just a bit too long and end up with a sprint to home.
Earlier this summer I was racing a storm line that was getting darker and
noisier by the minute - I ended up with lots of wind and some too close
lightening - it was a wonderful ride! Bob

Each time I was able to glimpse them between the trees and hills it was
rapidly closing in. Yes, I has rain gear with me. But dealing with traffic
on the state highway when it's dark and raining is hardly fun. 7 miles to
go. Who would win? Thunder rolling all around, the updraft of the storm
behind me creating a headwind that greatly slowed my descent. I made it
into town still dry, with half a mile to go, surrounded by dark and fog and
near constant thunder. I crossed the finish line into my garage as the
first drops fell. Got 'um at the tape with a lean! Grin.

 With abandon,
 Patrick

Great fun, Bob. I figured I wouldn't be alone in playing with storms that
way. Grin.

With abandon,

Re: [RBW] Re: Practical Racing

2013-09-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Fun topic. With me, whether I win or lose depends on whether I have fenders
installed. If I don't, I lose -- guaranteed. Pedaling furiously, I manage
to get far enough from home and into an area where there is no shelter, and
have to plod away wetly thereafter until I reach my destination.

Funny: after a very wet July (we've been in 3 or so years of severe
drought) the sun came out for three weeks, so I concluded, Monsoon over
and removed the fenders from Ram and 03. Sho' 'nuff, immediately, a week
of record-breaking rain. So, Sat, put the fenders back on the '03. Sho'
'nuff, it's been sunny since.

Patrick I squander my racing urges in vainly trying to chase down young
40-somethings on the bike path Moore, gasping for air in ABQ, NM.

Love it! On the other hand I've also found myself overtaken... or

 storms this summer!
