I believe the "Riv Rally," refers to this list, the Riv list, since it was organized for and by list members. I can't imagine anyone being turned away for lack of a particular brand of bike... Just from chatting with the participants, I believe everyone on RRE 2012 could have ridden a perfectly suitable and very appealing non-Riv bike. Maybe we need to do a non-Riv Riv Rally! -Original Message- From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Montclair BobbyB Sent: Sunday, April 29, 2012 8:37 PM To: RBW Owners Bunch Subject: [RBW] Re: Riv Rally East Miraculously Escapes Weather Debacle! Thanks, it's all good. As long as I continue to be involved, Riv Rally will always be Riv Rally (I promise), and it will remain open TO ALL who embrace the Riv philosophy, REGARDLESS of whether you own a Riv or some other bike. In fact, at the next rally I plan to ride either my '85 Stumpy, my 86 Cimarron or my 80-something Mongoose. I'm lucky to own some pretty awesome Non-RIV bikes, but I CAN tell you (with no hesitation) that RBW has had a profound impact on how I built up these bikes as well as fueling my passion for the bicycling lifestyle, in general. I suspect this is probably true of many Riv owners. I'm proud to be a Rivendell Owner, not just for owning and riding one of their extraordinary bicycles, but also for embracing the Rivendell philosophy of supporting all that is good and worthwhile in bicycling. I think the Riv Rally is a fantastic idea, and I'm amazed at Bobby's ability to bring an idea like that to fruition. I associate it in my mind with classic auto rallies, like the Austin Healey rally that came through my town a few years ago, or the dozens of MGs I saw on my drive down the East side of the Sierras last Summer. As an outsider, I thought that was cool. I talked to one guy on the AH rally who was driving something else, but he came out to see his friends and the countryside. I used to be into hearses, and the Professional Car Socieuses would put on rallies and meets. I didn't consider it pretentious - it was a way to meet people you only knew online, check out their amazing stuff, and do something together. I won't apologize for making auto connections in a bike forum, since I think it's a valid comparison. We are into something that's outside the mainstream, and we have every right to celebrate it and enjoy it, come together and share it. I got great vicarious pleasure out of both the past Riv Rallies, and hope they continue. Any "exclusivity" is strictly in your perception, not in reality. > I just didn't like the idea that on a "Riv Rally" someone might feel > having a fancy bike is necessary to come along with the group. The rally was open to all on this list, and no requirements for bikes have ever been posted, except for the obvious needs that if you're going to be riding on gravel you need a bike suitable for doing so, and if you're going to be carrying gear for an overnight you need a bike suitable for that. > I suppose "pretension" was the wrong way to put it. There is indeed a whole lot to like about the Great Allegheny Passage, and especially about the towns it goes through. The Greenbrier River Trail in West Virginia is similar, although not nearly as long and the top 1/2 inch of surface is a lot looser, but there are few towns along the way; and the one I stayed at (famous for the "Roadkill Cookoff") is sorely deficient in terms of food compared to the likes of Confluence, which has both top notch pizza and the justly famous Three Sisters. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Done. Speaking of the snow, John Philip sent me an email at 1:30 AM this morning... he had just arrived home in Syracuse after a long and grueling day. When he and Tom Nezovich awoke in Rockwood, there was some 6+ inches of wet, heavy snow on the ground. They slogged through up to a foot of snow (in places) to the Divide, after which things started to improve... (like having gravity in their favor, but also the snow began to thin out).
