hello,

july 31st (as well as august dates) would work well.

it looks like i can probably carpool to the start with my friend.
caltrain would have worked well as far as public transport goes ...
perhaps the start could be near one of those stops in case other car-
less riders want to join.

Is there a campground at the top of Page Mill? Are you thinking of
Black Mouintain (http://www.openspace.org/activities/
ideas_for_campers.asp)?

Another possibility could be to descend on the hike n' bike at Half
Moon Bay SP. There is also camping in Portola State Park, but it is a
mighty steep climb coming out... I think the biggest barrier to
getting out for an S24H is the whole need a reservation thing
(besides securing a quick furlough from parental responsibiities).

Anybody else on the SF peninsula have S24H spots they're willing to
divulge?

BTW, this looks to be the last summer of cheap and always available
bike 'n hike accomodations in CA state parks, since they're all going
to close due to the failure of our state govt to fix the budget
disaster This is tragic. I've GOT to get away for at least a 3-4
nighter this summer while I still can

That's the spot. I've camped there several times. Campers are alone in
what might as well be the middle of nowhere, although it's so near
Silicon Valley. One has to hike or bike in, so campers are never
bothered by noisy motorists. The running water is not potable, but one
can easily carry water or a water filter.

Another possibility could be to descend on the hike n' bike at Half

In the past, riders could exit Portola Redwoods by riding out on Old
Haul Road, a fire road, to Memorial Park. The last time I camped at
Portola Park I got a rude shock when I found out Old Haul Road was
closed and I'd have to ride back up that mighty steep road. I don't
know if Old Haul Road is open again.

Sanborn Park, at the top of Sanborn Road (above Saratoga), could be a
perfect overnight getaway. It's not as much climbing as Black
Mountain, but still a respectable distance.

If we got a group together including someone from Palo Alto, we could
camp at Foothills Park, another delightful campground. I'm fond of
Grant Ranch Park partway up Mount Hamilton Road, though from my house
it involves a tedious ride through San Jose before one gets to the
good stuff. Other possibilities would be Castle Rock, Memorial Park,
Big Basin and Butano Park.

2009-06-11 Thread Adele Newman

I'm interested. I would vote for Foothills Park if someone in Palo Alto
can come through--I'm in Mt View.

I'm a bike camping newbie--tried Half Moon Bay with a small group last
October and really liked it, but it's a tougher trip (big hill in both
directions) from my place than I like to do for an overnight at my
current fitness level. For a sub-48 if it's possible to stay 2 days...

This weekend I'm going to Uvas Canyon (Morgan Hill) with a small group
from the Almaden cycling club. I will report back...

Grant Ranch sounds good--wonder if we could use light rail or Caltrain
for part of the trip through San Jose if the group is not too large.

I could probably be talked into most of these suggestions, including
Half-Moon Bay.
