[RBW] Re: Flat pedal shoes

2015-10-18 Thread David Person
If you get the chance, you have to try a pair of 5-10's (the Freerider or
other models). They stick to the pedal like no other shoe I worn. Almost
as good a connection as my Speedplay clipless.

[RBW] Re: Flat pedal shoes

2015-10-18 Thread JohnS
For the past month I've been wearing Giro New Republic bike shoes. They
look like old school leather shoes and are very comfortable. They are
designed for SPD pedals, but my feet/legs/ankles are not compatible with
clipless pedals, so I modified the shoes to work with an old pair of MKS
steel cage pedals. I unscrewed the outer pads from the soles of the
shoes and cut the rubber treads off a pair of flip flops. I then cut the
rubber treads to size and screwed them to the soles of the New Republic
shoes. They work great! I really like the rigid soles, I was noticing some
stress from my feet flexing when I had rode longer distances, greater than
10 miles, with my Keen sandals. I got my New Republic shoes on sale for
about $95. The leather Republic shoes are a $100 more, which is out of my
price range.

Re: [RBW] Re: Flat pedal shoes

2015-10-18 Thread Eric Norris
You mentioned narrow heels—yes, that’s partly what I’m looking for. As you
note, most “running” or “normal” shoes have a sole that’s wide at the heel and
can hit the bike.

The Sidi shoe you included in your email is in the right ballpark, but not with
all the color (I prefer black cycling shoes) and not necessarily with the
ratcheting and velcro closures.

With all due respect to the Deacon and others, I *do* prefer a stiffer sole. I
don’t think I have “weak feet,” but they do appreciate having a stiffer sole
between them and the pedal.

FWIW, I’m trying out a pair of these, but without the cleat installed:

http://www.chromeindustries.com/us/en/truk-pro-black/

They’re pretty close to what I’m looking for—understated looks, black,
stiff(er) sole (see their description).

2015-10-18 Thread Jeremy Till
I, for one, heartily approve of this build. I'm a big proponent of "high
performance uprights" or "high quality casual."

http://handlebarchronicles.blogspot.com/2015/01/high-performance-upright-towards-new.html

My own Quickbeam is built up similarly, with swept back bars, ergon grips,
and lightweight rims + tires, albeit with a fixed gear instead of the 10spd
road drivetrain.

[RBW] Re: Clem Geometry

2015-10-18 Thread Tim Wood
Keith, great analysis. I have to admit, I thought I had a good grasp on fit and
geometry charts, but can honestly say that I have I no idea how front centre
translates to ride and fit. I come from a road background and always based my
sizing on tt length and head tube (a little thought was put in to ht/st angles
but again I didn't know how they translated). For years I have been under the
assumption that I needed a 57/58cm tt and that's that. So the thought of a 64cm
tt is a lot to wrap my head around.

Like you said,I'm going to trust in the process and method and hope it all
works out (gulp). What reassures me is the comparison you make between a 59
Clem and a 58 hunq being close in size and fit. I'm not sure why this reassures
me cuz I've never ridden a 58 hunq, but I feel like if I were to buy one I'd
buy a 58. Yikes.

Anyway, not gonna stress about it, just gonna open that box when it gets here
and ride off in to the sunset with my bars high.and hope that I can reach
them.

Tim

[RBW] My Rivendell Rodeo build

2015-10-18 Thread hsmitham
Nice build Bruce.

I've ridden the bike and it's quick, nimble and highly responsive. I also rode
it in it's other iteration and it was fantastic, though with the upright
configuration the comfort level is extraordinary. No rules, just do what feels
right.

[RBW] Re: My Rivendell Rodeo build

2015-10-18 Thread Richard L
I really like your Roadeo and the build. There was a Roadeo with flat bars
on the Rivendell Blug a while back. The bars might have been MAP's instead
of Albatross'.

A high performance road bike with flat bars? Horrors, what would some of
the other forums dedicated to road bikes think?

That's the nice thing about this group. The responses are positive and
helpful, in recognition of how versatile a Rivendell bike really is.

Going to be an interesting experience, isn't it?! Here's thought:

Compared to the 58 Hunq., the top tube is 4 cm longer, but the front
center is only 2.3 cm longer. In addition to that, the slightly slacker
(1/2 degree) head angle will shove the handlebars further backward, toward
the rider, making it feel effectively shorter yet - so probably pretty
comparable in fit to that size Hunq. However, add the extra reach-back of
the bosco bars, as you say, and I wouldn't be surprised if you (and
I) actually find ourselves needing to embrace a laid-back cruiser-style
fit, and even set the seat back further than normal. Otherwise, it might
feel cramped during out-of-the-saddle climbing? I haven't ridden a Hunq.,
so this is total speculation, mind you.

Either way, I'm more inclined these days to follow the cue of a frame's
seat tube angle, and to accept it as part of the bike designer's intent as
to how the bike should be set up, rather than go into the process with
preconceptions that my saddle should always be set the same relative to the
bottom bracket, or of letting familiarity suggest what I think my ideal top
tube length is. If for no other reason than that it helps me rationalize
owning multiple bikes because it gives them distinct personalities. I
think picking a bike based on top tube is a good measure when you buy from
a mainstream bike shop that simply parrots what the fit charts and
magazines say, and would otherwise put you on the wrong size, but Rivendell
is a bit different.

Attached is a side-by-side comparison between the Clem and Hunq. I filled
in some blanks based on what we know now. Looks like there might be some
typos in the steering geometry of the 52 Clem though - so no guarantee that
this is correct.

get ~3L of capacity without having to make annoying choices about the
Rawland's cockpit (I'm currently set up with interrupter levers, and like
'em). It hasn't arrived yet, but I'm assuming this line of bike bags does
OK with wet weather. I know I'll get my own experience with that soon
enough, but would appreciate hearing what others in this group have learned
from there own experience, especially about maintenance.

Second question: assuming all goes well with the TrunkSack, I could imagine
supplementing it with a SaddleSack (either Small or Medium). My saddle
doesn't have loops, and I don't particularly want to swap it out, since it
fits where I sit, and I've got the same saddle on 4 bikes. Reflexive
googling got me to the potentially helpful Velo Orange Saddle Loops
,

which apparently would allow me to adapt my existing saddle for this use.
Has anyone had experience with this gizmo? Are there competing products
worth trying?

Thanks,

rod

I've used the VO loops and they work well; they're better than the original
Cyclos, certainly.

OTOH, I've very often simply strapped bags to the rails of my Flites with
excellent results. You do have to conscientiously pull the straps tight,
though.

To be honest, I just wear my old running shoes. They're comfortable,
already broken in, and I can walk in 'em once I arrive. Some might

2015-10-18 Thread Deacon Patrick
My take on the stiff shoe thing is if you "need" a stiff shoe for biking
your foot's too weak. Get a stronger foot not a shoe that will weaken your
foot further. Grin. And for clarity sake, the Zems are not stiff at all.
You can roll them up in a ball. zero cushioning or support and they are
foot shaped so won't deform your feet by squarshing them into a shape God
never intended.

[RBW] Re: A couple of Sackville questions

2015-10-18 Thread Deacon Patrick
They are fantastic in all weather, any length of ride. I've done
bikepacking trips that were multi-day rain settled in for the long haul. I
don't bag things, just stuffing them in. Here's the details of how they
work in my experience:

-- TrunkSacks: some minimal water will seem in at the exposed zipper. Not
enough to matter on a day ride, and I don't care too strongly on a
multi-day ride as it is my food bag. I use a small on the front for food on
multi-day rides, and a large on the rear rack for day rides.

-- TourSacks: These are my most abused bags and I just popped the D-ring
rivet on one of them. The field fix was tying it together with a lace and
using other D-rings to secure the load. No change to the trip. When riding,
I've had no issues with rain or snow finding their way into the bags. I
keep the panniers in the vestibule at night, so they aren't sitting out in
all-night rains.

-- SaddleSack: If they didn't keep the weight up so high, I'd go with these
every time. I found the easy access to everything a big bonus, and never
got wet inside at all despite being left out nights backpacking through
some epic torrential all night rains. If my vertigo didn't make me such a
wimp with the weight higher, I'd bikepack with the large SaddleSack and be
delighted.

Maintenance: None for 4 years until the rivet popped on my TourSacks. That
should be an easy fix at a local store, but I've yet to call around. Mud
collects nicely on them, dried, and falls off with use. Rain and snow shed
beautifully. Bashes and scrapes into raw/sharp decomposed granite rocks and
boulders s shrugged off without issue. These are hearty beastly bags that I
expect to last a decades of horrendous, loving abuse, er, use. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

I'm in the third week of a month long "test" of the low carb high fat eating
plan (consistent with "Eat Bacon Don't Jog.")
Some observations: I have consistent high quality level of energy - no more
more big fluctuations based on meals.

Soreness and achiness are greatly reduced even though I am getting regular,
quality exercise (weight training, track intervals, an 8:30 200K ride last
weekend and an 8:15 hilly 150K this weekend).
My mood is upbeat - not weirdly happy- just contentedly mellow/ more relaxed.
It is possible to do long rides on less than 30 grams of carbs without bonking.
Oh yeah - I also dropped 13lbs and it all seems to have come from the
midsection.

True story. No BS. And no exaggeration.

[RBW] Re: Flat pedal shoes

2015-10-18 Thread Bill Lindsay

Eric

Cycling shoes have a lot of different looks. What aspect of "look like
cycling shoes" are you (or your friend) looking for? Velcro closures?
Bold graphics? When we google "cycling shoes images" and come up with
something like this:

Or, when you say "look like cycling shoes" do you just mean "don't look
like Birkenstocks or Oxfords"?

The thing I don't like about running shoes on flat pedals is that the heel
is too wide. So for me, when I'm at the shoe outlet in the mall, I look
for a narrow heel area, among other things. The Adidas Samba and a couple
other Puma models work great for this, for me, but in my eye, they do not
look like cycling shoes.
