I had forgotten about it (not in the sense I was suprised it was there but in
the sense I hadn't thought about it in years). I got it at a much different
time in my life and it just never got built. I probably have all the parts in
the bin. I fell in love with the Nitto Humble seat post and this bike was built
around that post and a pair of XTR brake levers.

It will get built this winter.

Cheers!

I'll ride it as a MTB, to complement my Hillborne, up mountainous terrain and

Banff and back at the least.

I plan to run 26" wheels, with 2.3 or so knobbies, probably on Velocity Blunt
35s, as well as RTPs eventually.

Disc brakes ? Maybe some day, like when/if I realy need them and when/if ever
there is some sort of standard to the standard, becàuse now it's a
free-for-aĺl. Maybe those days are gone though, it seems so. I can see why
retail bike shops would have such a hard time, you now need a separate
warehouse for all the different parts for all the different standards.

[RBW] A nice morning for a ride

2017-01-14 Thread Daniel Betancourt
I'm on my second week of training for a century ride and today I was
supposed to go 35 miles (see training chart below). I normally go around
10-20 miles per ride and haven't biked past 25 miles since September so I
was looking forward to both going longer distances and seeing how the bike
rode and how I felt afterward.

WEEK DATE RANGE SUN
RECOVERY MON

8 Feb 19-25 10 Off 10 Off 10 Off 100

I first rode through downtown Oviedo which like Key West is known for their
roaming chickens and had to take a pic.

There is a short offroad section which mud and rocks that I hate riding
over with my road bike (see pic below). The Sam handled it with no issues.
That is a big plus for me.

I averaged 13.2 mph over the ride and was generally pleased with the
performance and lack of my back and wrists getting sore when riding my road
bike.

My legs are sore from the ride but that is to be expected. I'm still
getting used to the saddle and haven't ridden that distance in some time so
I'm a bit saddle sore. Another explanation is that the saddle still isn't
broke in yet. One nice thing I was able to do was to change my riding
stance to sitting straighter up which altered the pressure on the saddle
more on my pubic bones and less on my groin. I don't have that option on my
road bike.

So far I'm loving this new bike! I'm having a Nitto R14 rear rack installed
on the bike today and looking forward to going out on a group social ride
around downtown Winter Park tomorrow with the wife. That should be a lot of
fun.

Dan

Re: [RBW] Re: Disc Brake Pros and Cons

2017-01-14 Thread George Schick
Man, that was a tough request. I had to do some digging, but I finally
found the original invoice from the on-line shop where I bought it. The
invoice is dated October, 2004 and the Avid disc brake assembly was listed
as BR7082. Not sure what that means - an Avid part number or the shop's
inventory part number. Anyway, it evidently dates back to pretty early in
the BB7 scheme and you raise valid points about improvements that the manf.
probably made over the last decade+. I keep saying "it" because I only
bought one for the front and have a V-brake on the rear because back then
Surly didn't have a good way of removing the wheel with those rear facing
dropouts if it was set up with a disc brake back there. Looking back on the
purchase, I think I would've used V-brakes both front and back if I had to
do it all over again.

[RBW] Free for postage- classic bike xeroxes and maps

2017-01-14 Thread Mike
I'm moving and need to shed stuff. This should all fit in a USPS flat rate
envelope for 6.45

Here is a small collection of classic bicycle themed articles/books- note,
these are photocopies, not the originals. They were given to me years ago by a
friend who owns a bike shop. He copied these from an old-timer employee.
Classic stuff mostly from the "Bike Boom" era.

Building Bicycle Wheels- by Robert Wright 1977

Sprocket Man - bike safety comic book from MIT 1976

Cycl-ology - catalog from Wheel Good Corp, from Minneapolis. Looks like late
60's, tons of classic parts and articles. I think this is the kind of thing
Grant was basing his Bridgestone catalogs on. Like the Whole Earth Catalog for
bikes. I guess former employees founded Flanders Cycle. See first paragraph
here: http://flandersbros.com/history/

Some other random bike info sheet copies (Raleighs and Gitanes and such)

Plus some maps: random Maine, New Hampshire, Mass, and Michigan bike maps.

Everything goes as a package. I just want to pass this stuff along rather than
putting it in the recycling bin. It's all a really interesting time capsule of
cycling in the past decades. I just don't want to cart it along on one more
move.

PayPal friends and family preferred.

Cheers- Mike in Bklyn, NY, but not for long

[RBW] ATTENTION NY RIV'S

2017-01-14 Thread alan lavine
Hello all,

Having a beer hall meeting (not to be confused with a town hall meeting)
this Tuesday evening, 6 pm at the Spritzenhouse 33, 33 Nassau Ave in
beautiful downtown Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Object is to rehydrate, tell tall
tales, compare bikes, stories, parts and adventures from the last year, or
any year. There will be, at the very least, me and Brad but would love a
bigger crowd. Any human who has ever ridden a bike once in their life and
still has a pulse is invited!

I'll spring for the first pitchersee you then.

[RBW] FS- older Lewis and Clark trail maps

2017-01-14 Thread Mike
Hello-

I have some older (2005) Adventure Cycling Lewis and Clark trail maps. I ended
up never taking the trip. They are obviously outdated, but I believe ACA has
updates on their website, and if someone lives or visits up there, they may
show you some good routes to ride.

I have maps 3 to 7, from Pierre, South Dakota to Astoria, Oregon.

ACA sells the current ones for over 15 bucks each. I'm looking for $20 plus
shipping for all five, which should be $6.45 USPS.

I'm moving and don't want to cart them around any more and don't want to
recycle them either.

Cheers- Mike

Re: [RBW] Re: Disc Brake Pros and Cons

2017-01-14 Thread Patrick Moore
Very good points, George.

Question: what model/version of the BB7s are you using? Are they mountain
or road? New or old?

For the record, all my disc setups (all 3 have been BB7s, 1 or 2 mountain
of the circa 2012 or so vintage; 2 road, one circa 2010, one 2016) have
been installed on bikes with hollow QR axles. I did notice some pad rub --
but only sometimes! Usually after riding several miles in fine sand or dust
-- when I stood, this with the mt version and V brake drop levers; but not
with the current roads.

If I were to replace my current BB7s, I'd look closely at the Spyres and
Klampers; but I am very pleased to say that, so far, I am very, very
pleased with the current version of the BB7 road model.

Speaking to Garth's post: I think mechanical disc brakes are pretty well
sorted out by now, at least to judge by my late model BB7s, which
scuttlebutt says are not as good as Spyres and Klampers. They work pretty
damned well!

Value for discs: IMO, only for dirty riding where rim brakes can wear out
rims quickly; and of course for wet riding, if you like. They also let you
use very light rims, like the Velocity Blunt SS:

http://www.wiggle.com/velocity-rims-blunt-ss-mtb-rim/?lang=us=USD=18=5360699424=5360699424_source=google_term_campaign=US_PLA_High+Margin_medium=base_content=mkwid%7csxoSZlk5w_dc%7cpcrid%7c96364502648%7cpkw%7c%7cpmt%7c%7cprd%7c5360699424us

Re: [RBW] Re: What is the most interesting thing in you parts bin?

2017-01-14 Thread Joe Bernard
Patrick, therein lies the problem small US parts makers encountered in the rear
derailer market: It may be cool and funky-looking and light (my Pro-Shift is
very light), but it was never going to shift any better than a much less
expensive XT mech. Then Shimano popped out 9-speed XTR and the game was over.

Re: [RBW] Re: What is the most interesting thing in you parts bin?

2017-01-14 Thread Patrick Moore
That's the one; thanks. I didn't realize it was WI, tho' it does fit with
their high end and elegant products like the ENO hub and DOS fw.

I seem to recall reading praises for its performance, the defects as listed
in DG notwithstanding. Still, it's obviously a complicated solution to a
problem, if problem it was, much easier solved by simpler means, like I
suppose the 8-speed era Deore XT rd.

Re: [RBW] My Cantis cant get no respect.

2017-01-14 Thread Ashwath Akirekadu
Wish I had known about these before I got VO Zeste Cantis for the Appaloosa
I'm going to build soon. Given the tire clearance (I had to see A picture
of it mounted on an MTB to fully get the idea) and fraction of the price,
they were worth trying even if it meant giving them away later for whatever
reason.

I have V-brakes on a Gary Fisher Marlin that I have owned since 2007. I'm
pretty certain I'm not technical enough, but I've never felt modulation
issue in 2000 or so miles I've ridden it.

Having said that, I do think Cantis look way more pleasing on Riv style
bikes.

Re: [RBW] Hunq-ish Romanceur build with Riv Bullmoose bars

2017-01-14 Thread Patrick Moore
What kind of riding will you use the Romanceur for? That will determine
gearing, of course, as well as other setup.

The frame looks well thought out, though I'd be somewhat between sizes as
far as top tubes go. I'll be interested to learn more about your build and
about how it rides.

And, I don't think it's too far OT at all; its Rivendellian or at least
Rivendell-esque, if not a Rivendell.

Drivetrain: If it were *mine*, this is what I'd do (27" wheel). Silver bar
end shifters. But I realize that I'm weird.

[RBW] Re: WTB 700c disc wheelset

2017-01-14 Thread Bruce Smitham
Thanks Jon, I'll take a look at that. I'm glad I haven't pulled the trigger
on any wheels or components because I've been reading more about
converting/building up as 650B/27.5" to fit some bigger tires. I was
thinking of XT 1 x 11 with Jeff Jones loop bars or drop bars but I haven't
settled on a good road brifter that works with disc brakes and Shimano 11
speed MTN.

Take care,

Lucky buyers. If anything changes your mind between now and delivery I will
take yours off your hands. Have 100cm pbh and actually have considered a
custom mixte because the largest Cheviot and Clementine did not measure up.
Also anyone looking for large Riv classics 64-68cm might be able to get me to
part with one in my fleet.
I have a 68cm custom, 68cm Atlantis w/ a& s couplers,
 68 Quickbeam, and a 64cm Bombadil.
Final option is a NOS never built up Betty Foy for a significant other by
chance.

Looks like a nice place and nice weather down there Daniel !

Your Sam setup looks fantastic.

My sentiments are with you regarding riding position. Every time I ride a
bike with aggressive handlebar setup, afterwards I end up wondering what
did I gain .

It is unergonomic (potential damage to c-spine) and feels totally
uncomfortable. I don't get to fully enjoy the scenic aspect of the scenic
ride.

Good luck for your century!

[RBW] Hunq-ish Romanceur build with Riv Bullmoose bars

2017-01-14 Thread Zach Duval
Anyone want to play build designer on my dime?

Apologies if this is off topic (non-Riv frame), but I'm looking for advice on
building up my Crust bikes Romanceur frame into a Hunq-inspired trail bike.
(This is sort of a poor-ish man's Riv, but with disc brakes).

So far I've only got the bars and a SUNXCD crankset (46-28, after the 28 was
mistakenly shipped instead of a 30).

What additional drivetrain parts would you spec?
