[RBW] Re: WTB English Rain coat

2019-10-01 Thread John Bokman
I can vouch for Hilltrek quality through and through. After learning about
them right here, and through recommendations from Deacon and others, I
finally bit the bullet last year and ordered my first - a 2x Ventile
Greenspot jacket. The quality is exceptional (fabric, sewing, etc.) but I
should have sized up, as recommended here. The sleeves are a tad short when
I'm stretched out on the bike. Also, I find the "handwarmer" pockets could
be improved by angling them to be more ergonomic.

True, the jacket is heavier than some, but for winter riding, that's a good
thing, in my opinion. Excellent details, high collar, great hood, etc.

Moral of the story: although I sized "correctly", when corresponding with
them i should have mentioned my riding position.

[RBW] Re: FS: Assorted Rivendell Baggins Bags, plus Acorn handlebar bag and Velo-Orange seat bag

2019-10-01 Thread Julian Westerhout
Update, correction, price drop.

The following are still available:

Correction:
What I thought was Velo Orange seat bag is actually a Berthoud with Klik
Fix saddle rail mount. Back, fairly lightly used, with a bit of dirt. $50
-- at this price it's a real bargain!

Price drop:
Rivendell Baggins Pa Cartright panniers with Arkel mounts — He added Arkel
mounts on a plate to these to make them easy to attach securely and remove
quickly, but the mounts are attached through the Baggins grommets, so can
be removed with no trace if desired. I think these originally had an over
the rack flap — that’s gone missing. A bit discolored, but clean and in
good condition. $̶1̶7̶5̶ now $140

Prices don't include shopping. Will ship at actual cost.

[RBW] Re: Make my AHH look less tempting!

2019-10-01 Thread 'Steven Seelig' via RBW Owners Bunch
The Philly Bike Expo is coming up on Nov 2
and 3rd, and for the past 2 years there's been a fella who gives a seminar
each hour on bike locking and other safety tips for folks who ride on the
mean streets of Philly. He's very entertaining, and goes through all the
things to think about in choosing a locking location, how to lock the bike,
the benefits of locking wheel skewers, you name it. Not a direct answer to
your question.

My son who is now 10 and I have attended the past two years to listen to
his presentation. Our favorite is when he describes folks on the street
who might be up to no good when you are cycling by as a single cyclist.
His advice when you come close to those folks is to turn around and yell
"Hey, Tommy," to give the impression there is someone else following you so
you're not as easy a mark. By the time you've ridden by, it's too late for
them to figure out that Tommy ain't behind you.

So every now and then, when I'm out riding with my son, I yell "Hey Tommy,"
and he gets a good laugh.

Regardless of whether he's there, the Expo is fantastic and well worth
checking out.

[RBW] FS: complete set RIvendell Readers

I collected the set, so it comes from a couple different sources, along
with the ones I acquired myself.

Before I knew there was an edition "zero," I had Grant sign the front of
edition "one." My thinking was it would be super valuable and I would
auction it off for charity. But that is silly, and it is just sitting here.

Shipping is probably around $20, so ... add another $20 for my energy and

$40

P.S. if there is an issue that come out in the last year or two I probably
don't have that so "complete, but possibly minus that latest issue."

[RBW] Re: Rough drive train issue

2019-10-01 Thread Chris Corral
Sounds like chainline to me. Without seeing the bike in person and assuming
everything was tightened correctly, my guess was going to be the chain was
running rough. FYI I have also noticed some chains are louder than others;
for example, KMC 9 speed chains are generally louder on Shimano cassettes
than SRAM. For my 10 and 11 speed Shimano stuff, I've been using Shimano
chains and performance is great. KMC is okay, maybe last a little longer.

Experiment for yourself. There are a lot of variables as I'm sure you have
realized by now.

I am having this problem with one of my bikes with a few cogs on the

wheels. I'll try applying a little more torque on the cassette lock and
see if that helps (good tip from a previous poster).

[RBW] Re: Rough drive train issue

2019-10-01 Thread Paul G
I, too, am having this issue. For me, it happened after going from an
Ultegra 10-speed chain and cassette to a KMC chain and MicroShift cassette,
both in 9-speed. However, the "grinding" sensation didn't happen
immediately, but after about 150-200 miles (after the first chain re-lubing
with Boeshield I might add).

It's become annoying and maybe I should have stayed with the 10-speed stuff
but I drank the "9-is-all-you-need" Kool-aid...especially so since the
current 9-speed setup friction shifts worse than the former 10-speed stuff
did even though it's not suppose to.

I'll also check the cassette lock ring torque before I complain further.

[RBW] Simworks Fun3 Bars Pictures?

2019-10-01 Thread Collin A
Hi Group

I'm thinking of a potential bar switch and was looking at the Simworks Fun
3 Bar as a potential candidate, but unfortunately, whatbars.com does not
have them in their database and it looks like that will be the case for the
near future.
https://www.sim.works/collections/handle-bars-simworks-by-nitto/products/fun-3-bar

Anybody have those mounted on a bike and willing to take a top-down photo
of it with a ruler for scale?

Much Appreciated,
Collin in Oakland

[RBW] Tubeless with fenders on a Cheviot?

2019-10-01 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I'm thinking about going tubeless on my 650b Cheviot if possible. It seems
like the Compass BSP 42 mm might be tight with fenders. Anyone have
experience with tubeless + fenders on a Cheviot?

Thanks,
Toshi
