Soma “three speed 2” bars are the greatest mustache ever! And they use
regular brake levers, so you can toss those road levers in the rubbish. And
run regular thumb shifters, and flip them over if you want. They’re great.

[RBW] Re: NYC Riv Ride?

2024-01-03 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
Sounds fun!
The Putnam trail North of Van Cortland is pretty, and ridiculously safe
with decent enough parking for those carventuring in.
But I f it’s excitement and real city feels everyone’s craving, maybe a
“every bridge (with bike access) from the Henry Hudson down to the
Brooklyn” ride? That’s a fun zipper to zip.

[RBW] FS: Jumbo Rosco Bubbe Iditabike

2024-01-03 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
Multiple Roscos and multiple bills aren’t adding up, and ever since I put
it together, it hasn’t snowed😩. So here for sale is the bestest bike for
the larger folks out there. I think it measures 64 at the seat tube, but
I’ve got a geometry chart somewhere I’ll plug in here asap.
Pictures
https://photos.app.goo.gl/U18G3VtrhaWFDisWA
Some weird rare parts, some not. Heartily patinated racks with internally
wired dynamo lights and handmade wooden fenders (pretty lightweight
actually). Racks and fenders made by me, the front rack can carry anything
you can get into some panniers, with the rear rack only ever having held
that light there and the fender steady, as I’m hesitant to load up the back
of toptubeless frame.
I’m keeping the grips and the seat, but everything else you see is
included. Also included is a new Mavic 319 rim for when you’d like to swap
out the front. Rear wheel came with my Clem and hasn’t seen much of the
world.
Very rare! Highly collectible?!
$2000.
Thanks for looking, and happy rolling to all
-Kai

2024-01-05 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
Yeah, I knew putting it up on the block would bring the precipitation…
still not enough to bring out these Ice Spiker studs. Speaking of which,
I’ll include some not ridiculously huge spiked tires in the sale, something
to get it close to its maximum size tire of around 2.4”. The seat height is
about 73cm for a lowest point possible, probably 88cm in the photos.
Thanks for all the kind words, and yes, it’s gnarly to the max!

I added up the exact parts Analog uses from the PW site and it came out
$5 more. Analog does all of the assembly as well which is not a huge deal
but even small bits of time are worth something. So Analog has the better
 deal by a tiny amount.

I put a NOS TA Zephyr on my Proto-Gallop. Such a beautiful,
lightweight, and well made crank. It was replaced by TA with the Carmina
which is equally nice but I preferred the Zephyr. So I recommend that
 product.

I sold it for a song to a nice fella who uses it a lot.(btw, I’d buy it

This is the chainstay sandwicher that Rivendell sells, it takes pressure
off the welds and puts it on the chainstays themselves. The only bad thing
is that the over tightening of these will squish tubes, but that can be
avoided by not over tightening.
I don’t use a kickstand, but if I did, I’d use one of these plates…
And for the record, beater bikes are bunk, use the good one.

This is no different than what one might do having just bought a nice

[RBW] FS- Large Hubbuhhubbuh tandem, $1800.

2022-11-30 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
Hey folks,
Economics and non-use force sale of a would be beloved bicycle.
I rode it solo a bit, less than 30 miles, and did a couple very short
jaunts with a kiddo.
It’s fairly swank, with a beautiful and expensive Velocity wheel set with a
SON dyno hub.
I had big plans, but they relied too heavily upon the hope that others in
the family would fall in love with the thing.
I put clear helicopter tape on the top tube out back to facilitate feet
upon it while legs were growing, and routed the brake cable away from that
same section of top tube. Works like a charm.
Never got as far as hooking up a light or connecting the front shifter, but
I’ll include both a light and a front shifter in the sale.
Hoping for a local sale, can deliver in and around New York and the
surrounding areas, and I’m happy to $hip it.
Photos- https://photos.app.goo.gl/tex6dqhe3pXZN83a7
And I’ll be keeping my captain saddle

Thanks much

Re: [RBW] Re: Last ride of 2022

2023-01-05 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
Three worms was easy, I had to hold the three while I used the pronged
worming needle to coax the 4th into place. They’re all half length worms as
I cut them to make the worms last, but if I hadn’t, it would’ve been better
to have used two worms doubled over into four, then the curves of the worms
could act as a wedge. The freezing temperatures might’ve been to my
benefit, otherwise the warm rubber goo factor would’ve likely caused the
worms to worm out of there pronto.
So, it was luck. Might need some of those specialty large plugs for the
next time…

Hi Matt, and welcome.
A standard starting height is PBH minus 11. If you’re rocking back and
forth to keep your feet on the pedals, it’s too high. If it’s not too high,
maybe it’s too low. Play around.

[RBW] Re: Best mitten design for very cold weather

2023-09-29 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
I believe the Craft brand lobster/trigger mitts to be rubbish. They don’t
let your fingers touch, wasting valuable insulation in between what could
otherwise be a cozy skin to skin situation. I love my relatively
inexpensive Toko brand cross-country ski gloves, they allow my fingers to
cuddle in comfort and perform their bike duties in single digit temps.
I’ve got three pairs of xxl, which will hopefully buy me a decade or so of
winter bliss…

Re: [RBW] Bike Makeover Thread

2023-10-21 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
Thanks Josh!
I’ve got a Rambouillet I like to commute on but I’ve been riding the Clem
exclusively since I busted my arm skateboarding. The Ram’s set up more
forward/aggressive, and is less easily shifted into a more upright
position. Fortunately I get to park my bikes in the back lot of my work, so
I rest easy through the day. When I need to lock up in the city, I use a
nice U-lock with a cable that I run through both wheels, seat, and
handlebars (when I have the bullmooses). The one advantage of riding huge
bikes is they’re less of a target for thieves, but still, I lock to the
gills. New museum construction will be pushing me out of my backlot soon,
so I’ll be locking up every day. The plans call for a small bike parking
room indoors once complete (2? 3? 4 years?). Once I end up parking inside,
I’ll worry a very slight bit about condensation. My bikes live in a cold or
hot garage depending on the weather, so I’m never rolling my warm ferrous
bicycle into a freezing storm, or worse, my frozen bicycle into a hot
parking room, a situation I’ll surely be facing. I’ve demanded that they
put in environmental controls to match the weather outside, but they know
I’m mostly joking 😭…

Re: [RBW] Re: Question about rear brake cable housing routing with low friction on a Clem

Speaking of extraneous gizmos, how about losing the cantilever brakes and
going with a V-brake? Cantilevers are cool, and they clear fenders better,
and they’re fun to problem solve, but linear pull brakes are so very much
great and easy.

Re: [RBW] Re: Question about rear brake cable housing routing with low friction on a Clem

2024-04-01 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
..and sweet fenders they are, can’t blame you for sticking with what works.
What’s the science behind brake noodles anyways?
I know I need them to route to my V-brakes, otherwise I’d have a mess of
housing sticking out the side of my bike, and I’ve used them to route
friction shifters out of the way of front bags with much success, but I
always thought there was a price to pay with slightly more friction in the
system, not less.
Obviously if it works, great, but if it works, why are we all not using
noodles to route cables any old way we’d like?
Thoughts? Proofs? Anybody using a noodle in an indexed shifting system have
a story?
Thanks
-Kai

[RBW] Re: Thumb Shifter Advice

2024-04-16 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
Because of the cable routing, inside mounted thumbshifters must be friction
because they need to be reversed, left/right. That said, clicks are pretty
great, you should run the expensive Shimano/Paul stuff, or the less
expensive Microshift thumbies. And that said, of my three bikes, two are
friction and also pretty great, but no inside thumbies for want of the
indexing option should my friction fail (just kidding, about the last
failing bit, not that other stuff).

[RBW] Re: 26.8 seatposts with generous setback

2023-04-13 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
I just checked out the Ritchey 2 bolt post and was disappointed to see the
two bolts are for extra retention, not adjustment. A two bolt seatpost,
like the S83 or the Thompson, that uses the two bolts to adjust fore and
aft angle are the only seatposts that should be able to be called 2 bolts.
So the Ritchey gets a booo. Kalloys are fine posts for a great price, but 1
bolt is sad for both retention and adjustability…

[RBW] Re: What do I replace coroplast with in Sackville

2023-04-18 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
As folks have said, more free coroplast will be the ideal solution.
However, if you want to make your coroplast last forever, never to go “all
bendy and collapsey”, send it around the front and back (or side to side)
corners, bending it the hard way. To bend “the hard way”, you’ll want to
score the coroplast before bending it. Use a straightedge and something
dull to scribe your bend line perpendicular to the corrugations. You don’t
want to cut the bends, just dent them enough to follow the lines you want.
If you plan it well, you’ll be able to unfold your new insert inside the
bag and it’ll lock into the interior dimensions, giving your bag structure
forever and ever…
Happy bagging!

My Hobson Zingo headset press is an inch too short for my Rivendell bicycle

Certainly an outlier’s problem, but one Julian might share. Still worth it
even having to swap the threaded rod for a 14”er, as the press plates are

2023-06-07 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
Albastache are undeniably great bars, but for my (less) money, Soma 3 speed
2’s are the greatest mustache on the planet. They’re fairly wide at 54cm,
and they take “normal” brake levers, which I don’t get scared I’m going to
catch on some underbrush with. And my thumbies fit anywhere, so I don’t
have to run 26mm Paul’s on the sleeve, or have a good pile of vintage band
clampers around…

Have them on my Rambouillet, currently set in the sloped up way with a 15cm
stem.

Thanks Rich! And Hi Gil of Gloucester (hoping to bring my blue step through
to Rockport for a week in July!, where’s the good stuff?)
When I got my Clem, there were no step through frames in size huge,
otherwise I’d have had that, and probably never grabbed at a Rosco or two..
Top tubes are literal crutches, kinda.
And that specialized titanium fancy bottom bracket was the first weight
weenie thing I ever purchased. Sealed Shimano cheapies have become my
favored crank holder in the thirty something years since.

I thought the stock Kendas (kwicknines?) were adequate tires, but the

Thank the Lord for our right to choices! But there are certainly many regarding
Canons, maybe too many. Here's one I made fairly recently-

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1321345-REG/canon_eos_m5_mirrorless_digital.html

Not that I'd want to push you towards that one, I'd get the M6 if I could, but
I decided to be a parent and that put the kabosh on any spending outside of
what's generally necessary (bike excesses are my indulgence), but having 30
shots of my kids looking somewhere else besides the camera versus only 3 has
cemented my love for Canon.

[RBW] FS: Schwalbe Big Ones 29x2.35

2020-06-11 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
These are the most supple butterfly wings ever! Really nice tires. Patrick has
a stash of them, I've got one left☹️. They'll run tubeless great, in fact you
shouldn't set them up any other way. Wish I could afford them right now, but
you should.
-Kai (no relation to seller, I just love Big Ones)

Re: [RBW] Re: Lowrider racks on MIT Atlantis?

2020-06-13 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
That's a great looking rack, but then there's this quote that made me wince-

"This rack sold individually. So I installed only right side, for my daily bike.

Maximum load capacity is 6kg (around 13 pounds) I could carry 28 Japanese
comics!"

Doesn't make it any less of a rack, I just think it's a little irresponsible to
sell lowriders one at a time with balance being so critical to safe and
comfortable steering. Presumably this is an expensive rack, what with all the
points of brazing and complicated bends, but one should buy two.

[RBW] Re: Can I fit J. App. or AHH in back of Civic or Impreza with back seat down?

2020-06-18 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
$5600?! Yeah, that'll make you think. My octogenarian pal recently gifted
us her "99" Mercury Mountaineer, and then my sister found herself wanting
to give up a 2010 Hyundai that's cozy, which I jumped at the chance for. So
yesterday I regifted the Mercury to a coworker's kid and will be looking to
install a hitch for a bike rack (no trailer towing) on the Hyundai. Point
is, go tiny and stick bikes outside any way possible.
Sorry about your Jetta

Those benders work much better than the harsh edge of a vice. There's also
super simple thick springs that fit the rod and disperse the bending pressure
nicely, or bend using some nice soft pine as the fulcrum.

Thanks Andrew! They're rusting pretty good, even after a clear coat of

And Coal Bee Rye Anne, there's 12 in the world. I thought there was 6 and I

thanks to Ryan, I've got 2 (A SIXTH OF THE WORLDS SUPPLY) and I can

[RBW] Re: bolt size on Nitto 32f mini front rack

2021-05-03 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
I'm a little confused and curious, having never seen a 6mm threaded hole on
the front of a fork crown, but assuming the fork's not built of something
other than metal, wouldn't it be so easy and satisfying to drill out the
threading and continue out of the back of the fork, enabling "normal" use
of that threaded mount? That way it would be easy to install, and easy to
remove when you want to sell it.

[RBW] Re: bolt size on Nitto 32f mini front rack

2021-05-03 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
Definitely go through the front because that's going to be your guide for
the back, and those threads are messing everything up, so they need to get
messed up!, as in, erased. Just enough gone to allow the rack's bolt
through without bother.
-Kai
Side note/ask, why do some crowns come with a threaded hole on one side?
That can't be a good way to attach a brake, right? The strength of a
caliper brake mount comes from the throughboltedness of it, yes? Losing
3/4" worth of bolt on a brake mount would not be a good way to shed
precious grams, so why? Dedicated light mount?

Re: [RBW] bolt size on Nitto 32f mini front rack

2021-05-03 Thread Kainalu V. -Brooklyn NY
That's certainly the case, but why? The only thing I can think that'd be
good for is a light mount, and two holes is as better for a light mount as
it is for everything else I can imagine, so I'm left wondering.
-Kai
A note for Drew, in case you do decide to drill that out, best to use a
centering punch that fits inside the threads so you can start with a
smaller drill bit and go bigger until you hit that sweet spot where you're
clearing out the threads up front and making the final pass out the back
with the rack then sliding through effortlessly. With oil of course, and a
wee bit of abandon.

This 64cm Sam Hillborne- https://photos.app.goo.gl/oe7AdWXzUKB8NF8dA

I popped the seatstay top braze off and had the joy of talking with Richard
Schwinn about fixing it better than new, which he did for free. Once I had
it back I was busy riding a Quickbeam and a Clem H, and felt weird about it
having broken for some crazy reason, and sold it for a song...

I'm sorry Tom didn't in the end like the Curt as well as I eventually

Note that the level tt effective length is 57 or perhaps 56.5. Also,
the Matthews replacement fork (made for Matthews 2:1) will accommodate 42
mm tires, and perhaps a bit wider, but won't accommodate 42s and fenders
 as
 it was supposed to do.

The powdercoat is really first rate and worthy to replace the Joe Bell
 original paint.

Integrated f and rear racks and internal light wiring.

I would *not* set up Kojaks tubeless. I did that briefly but it was
only air pressure holding the beads to the rims. But Kojaks ride well with
tubes; they were my tire of choice after I decided that 26 X 1.25 Paselas
just flatted too often (tho' Orange Seal regular formula in the Paselas'
tubes will solve most puncture problems). Note taht at least with the
Matthews fork and just possibly with the original fork you can use the
superlative 42 mm RH Naches Pass. And of course you can without any
restrictions at all use the also superlative 28 mm Elk Pass, with fenders.

Curt Goodrich's workmanship is stellar, and the modifications by Dave
Porter and Chauncey Matthews are well done, too.
