[RBW] Re: Decision Potential

2011-05-26 Thread jamison brosseau
Hey so, I have an 89cm pbh. i am six feet tall. i have a 63 cm
homer, a 61 atlantis and a 60 cm bombadil. if i were to choose a
hunquapillar i would get a 58, to account for the larger tires and
such ( the same reason i have a 61 atlantis. I can lift all of my
bikes about 1-1.5 inches off the ground, but i seldom do this cause in
the real world i rarely if ever need to do this. anyhow i was just at
RIV last week and test rode some bikes, and did in fact ride the 62 cm
hunq. i didn't lift it up, and the top tube was up there but i was
able to straddle it with flat feet, and the ride was fantastic, it
felt great. the have that whole crotch worrier scenario on there site
if it doesn't worry you then go for the 62. i live in nyc and love
having the bomba with the huge tires, it may not seem necessary , but
the ride is awesome, and i find myself choosing the fat tires for city
riding most of the time.

[RBW] Re: Considering new pedals

2011-06-01 Thread jamison brosseau
i pedaled in clips for ten years or so, but was always fixed riding.
when i made the move to geared bike i decided to try the grip king,
cause i wear a variety of shoes and they seamed appealing. the grip
king didn't seem so grippy to me, and on a lark i bought a set of
super cheap plastic bmx platform pedals . i love them, and now have
them on all of my bikes, though if i were to ride fixed again, i would
use clips or grip kings.

[RBW] Re: East Coast frame painting

2011-06-05 Thread jamison brosseau
hey, imron paint is generally durable. with powder coating in my
experience, corrosion can and does happen under an otherwise normal
looking finish. with wet paint this doesn't happen, im not sure why
this is.
i also lock my bike outside, but i wouldn't really consider powder
coat, the finish itself is more durable, but as a protective coating
for steel i don't think its so good. paint also gives a better
looking finish.

[RBW] Re: East Coast frame painting

2011-06-05 Thread jamison brosseau
fwiw, if you do decide powder coating is the way to go, there is a
really great coater across the street from my house of the morgan L
stop. Avant Guards. They are pricey but for all my jobs where the
coating needs to be nice, i use them. Patson (sp?) on meadow street
is super cheap but pretty down and dirty. For both those places you
need to strip your paint, i think the painter in jersey will do that
for you.

[RBW] Re: East Coast frame painting

2011-06-05 Thread jamison brosseau
powder coating is a very durable finish. i completely agree with that
statement. i have had many bikes powder coated, and as a wood and
metal fabricator, i have had many parts powder coated. A couple of
years ago i did a project, where the client requested a clear
powdercoat on some steel shelving units, some to be used indoors, and
some to be used outdoors. I was suprised to be called back one year
later, because surface rust had developed beneath the clear powder
coat. this happend to both the indoor and outdoor units. I was
perplexed, had the units sandblasted thoroughly cleaned, and re powder
coated. i was less suprised when i was called about one year after
that, with the same results. no structural damage had occurred, but
the client didn't like the look of the rust, so we stripped the units,
and painted them a grey color, that looked similar to raw steel.
anyhow after that we decided to do some tests. we had several steel
parts powder coated in clear, black and white powder coat, and we
painted the other versions of these same parts with a clear black and
white automotive paint. i put all of the units on a shelf out of mind
in the shop. six months later i took the parts down to examine them
and noticed, the clear powder coated unit showed some surface rust
under the clear powder coat. I decided to strip the powdercoat off of
the other black and white units and lo and behold, there was rust
underneath the powder coat. I stripped the paint off of the painted
units and there was no rust.
the powder coated units were more difficult to strip than the painted
ones, but in my experience provided less protection from oxidation.
it would take many years for a bike frame to rust away even
unfinished, but if you are worried about rust, it is my experience the
at powder coating isn't as rust protective as wet paint.

2011-07-09 Thread jamison brosseau
i wish all of my bikes had at least two top tubes. maybe even three. i may
do the wooden dowel trick, on my bombadil to see what it looks like.
i prolly don't need em. i like the way they look. 50mm tires in nyc on
mostly roads is really one of the best choices i have ever made. im not
slower for the extra tubes or the big tires. if you don't like the double
tubes dont gettem. none of this is necessary. its all fun.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell Flag?

2010-08-29 Thread jamison brosseau
don't get me wrong, I love Rivendell Bikes and company the whole
deal. It seems as though they struck out, to do their own deal their
own way, and I would like to think that would be inspiration for folks
to do the same. If you want a flag, why not make your own, and have
it be about you, not a company. People will see the bikes, and you
will have lots of opportunities to talk up the company, but making
your own flag seems way cooler, and way more in line with the whole
Riv philosophy.
make your own flag,

[RBW] Re: Painted Hunqua

2010-09-03 Thread jamison brosseau
its funny those little differences. In fact My AHH was delivered to
me by Vivian, my at home ups driver, as was my atlantis, and my
bombadil i received at work, so keith my at work ups driver delivered
that bike. Keith is Vivians immediate boss, and all around he is a
better driver than vivian, i suppose that is why he is the shift
leader.
anyway, seeing as how keith is better than vivian it makes sense that
the bombadil is a better bike, i just enjoy it more knowing it was in
the caring hands of keith, while the ahh and atlantis both seem
tainted to me as they were temporarily cared for by Vivian. in two
seconds im going to get on my ahh and ride to work, i dread the
moment i have to swing my leg over a bike delivered by an inferior ups
driver, i mean i could have just had it delivered to work, and then
maybe i would have enjoyed it some. i guess im just a self loather.
what should i do, maybe i should stop concentrating on the minute
differences and just ride my bike they are all rivendells and are
supposed to have excellent handling attention to detail and a great
ride. or perhaps i should further differentiate my bikes from those
around me, convincing myself of their superiority or in the vivian's
bikes cases inferiority. perhaps i can come up with some syllogisms
(sp)

its funny. riding daily in nyc is by far the roughest place i have
ever ridden (surface wise). thats why the bombadil is my first choice
most of the time for city riding. it really is a great city bike.
the red stumpy is getting some parts swapped out, and sets in some
disarray at my shop, till this weekend. anyhow fun being photoed by
a super trendy trick/track type blog. purple pedals are the new
coke.

and people on this site, do sometimes take which normal clothes to

[RBW] Re: New Thoughts on Saddle Height?

2010-09-28 Thread jamison brosseau
i find that when i take my pubic bone height minus ten cm the saddle
is still a bit too low. i am six ft tall , with an 89 pbh and find i
am most comfortable with the saddle at about 80 - 80.5. i think foot
size must also be factored in. i have a size 13 shoe, i think that is
why my saddle is a bit higher. i bet if my toes got chopped off i
would prefer a bit lower saddle. thats why i moved to new york city,
so i can stay far away from lawnmowers.

[RBW] Re: Oakland/Berkeley probability of theft?

2010-11-11 Thread jamison brosseau
hey, i don't live in the east bay, but do live in brooklyn new york.
i lock up my bikes frequently. for commuting i only use baskets, with
tote type bags, and remove them from the bike when i go in someplace.
the racks stay, but i use two u locks, and a long cable. one long u
lock will do my front wheel and frame to whatever i am locking to ,
and i use a mini lock to do my rear wheel, and use the cable to weave
through my rack, and seat. its kind of a pain, but i have the space.
i also made sure my renters insurance covers bike replacement if
stolen.

i am also in brooklyn, and would be very interested in camping near
DIa this summer. As far as I know there is camping on long island as
well, but perhaps montauk is too far. After five years in the city,
and leaving very little. I have realized these little jaunts into
nature, are just what i need if i am to continue living here. It also
helps to finally have a bicycle equipped for such jaunts.

[RBW] Re: Sizing on a A Homer Hilsen

2010-05-18 Thread jamison brosseau
I actually got my 63cm hilsen, and i have just over an inch of space,
the top tube fits perfectly. I really think a 61 would have been too
small for me, and would have been close to not being able to get my
bars higher than my saddle. my saddle height is right at 79, i'm not
too worried about the 60cm bombadil, most of the time i will have one
foot on the peddle when i stop, and that gives me even more room.
its funny that i was so worried about the size at the time, i remeber
as a kid riding my dads schwinn world tour that was way too big for
me, i rode it off road, on mountain biking trails, and did small dirt
jumps with it . i wasn't even tall enough to sit on the saddle. had
to stand the whole time. never hurt myself once, until i tried to
drop in with it on tom jone's half pipe. any how i wouldn't ride a
bike that big now, but i had fun didn't get hurt.
i guess two extra centimeters doesn't meen too much to me.
if your thinking atlantis, what about the hunquapillar?

spandex is fine, so is no spandex. heels cool too, clogs boat shoes

[RBW] grip king alternatives

2010-06-30 Thread jamison brosseau
I have been happily using grip king pedals for the past 2000 miles or
so. Recently purchased a used atlantis, minus pedals, and bought a
pair of animal bmx pedals from the local bike shop. Alloy platform,
with screws already in place for grip. no need to add aftermarket
spikes. they work great, and the bike shop assures me if i wish to
grind any handrails with my atlantis they will hold up well.
classic bmx platform, same as mks, but with screws in place. $20-50.
Rainbow riot of colors.
did a 30 miler out and back to fort tilden beach, here in NYC in very
worn sperry topsiders with no discomfort.
animal.

[RBW] Re: Shorts--MUSA alternatives

2010-07-02 Thread jamison brosseau
i like the musa shorts alot. I dont find them loose at all. In fact I
need the XLs and i have a 35" waist. maybe i am a bit thicker thighed
and bottomed than most. i had mine cut shorter, and hemmed. I really
hate that shorts have stopped being short, and are more medium in
length. 5-6" inseam at most, or in my opinion stop being shorts and
become what should be called mediums. I guess im a leg man.

[RBW] ahh stubby cotton hat

2010-07-07 Thread jamison brosseau
Let me start by saying i have a big head (7 7/8 to be exact). I have
a very difficult time finding woven hats that will fit over my
noggin. I have had some custom cycling caps in the past (winter and
summer variety) that were great, but none of them are as nice as this
cap. fits over my dome with room to spare, washes great on a cold
cycle(no dryer) in the washing machine, and if i let it dry on my head
gives me a truly custom fit. I really love this hat. short enough
bill to block the sun, but still lets you see the road. Haven't tried
it under a helmet, cause i don't were em.
but i bet it would fit. stupendous hat. im gonna get two more.

[RBW] Re: Newbie needs therapy...

2010-07-08 Thread jamison brosseau
I have an A Homer Hilsen, Atlantis, and on monday ups willing a
Bombadil. I live in Brooklyn NY and commute everywhere by bike. I
only have these three bikes, I lock them on NYC streets everyday. My
A Homer is only a couple months old, but already has plenty of dings
and scrapes. The parts on these bikes are faily typical riv stuff,
but with racks and baskets.
Nothing would be too expensive to replace. A New paint job is only
about $300, so no biggie there either. Renters or homeowners ins.
would cover replacement cost if stolen.
be happy you have this bike, don't sell it to replace with a long haul
trucker. ride it everyday, lock it up where you want. It is only a
bike, after all, and no fun if you dont use it.
im sure if you start locking it up all the time and getting some
beausage on it you will be able to get used to the idea of enjoying
it.
stop worrying.
congratulations on owning a great bike.

[RBW] Re: A. Homer Hilsen ~ shades of blue color question!

2010-07-10 Thread jamison brosseau
I must say i think both colors are nice blues.
I think the darker blue is a bit more unusual, This blue is of medium
value, certainly not dark, still light enough to clearly see the lug
lines, yet dark enough to provide a nice (but not to heavy) contrast
with the cream accents. In fact I think this "darker" blue is more in
line with the atlantis coloring as that green is also a medium valued
color though about one half to one shade lighter than the darker blue
AHH.
On first impression I agree with Rene, that the lighter blue is more
attractive, but I think with time the darker blue has more of that
"magical" coloring, that one would grow to appreciate. In short the
darker blue is a longer read.
I generally find it easier when, the color is decided for me, I got
the Hilsen that was available ( a darker one), but would have been
perfectly happy with the other. With how nice this bike rides, i think
i could have grown to love any color.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell as a beater bike?

2010-07-18 Thread jamison brosseau
i agree with charlie. they are just bikes. i ride both of mine and
soon to be a third daily in NYC. they get locked outside for hours
(two u locks and a cable). all that locking nicks up the paint pretty
bad, but they still ride great, and in my opinion look better with age
and use. last year i bought a used rockhopper to use as a beater, it
was great at first and slowly i started swapping parts and upgrading
it, pretty soon i was into the bike for over $1200, and couldn't think
of it as a beater anymore. i guess im not capable of having a beater
( ie a bike i don't care about or am not worried about) thats why now
i only have rivs(dad has the rockhopper). i like the way they ride
and don't want anything else (at least for now). i have renters
insurance that will cover my bikes if stolen, and a new paint job if i
decide to get one is pretty affordable. no beaters not now not ever.
all that being said, if one of my bikes (or my old rockhopper) got
stolen i would be sad, but i would get a new one, thats what insurance
is for. whats the big deal? if salt and snow is a concern maybe a
second wheelset would make sense.

[RBW] High Heavily front loaded Hilsen , and riv encounter. fort tilden.

2010-07-18 Thread jamison brosseau
road out to fort tilden beach in the far rockaways today. had the
marks rack with a medium size basket loaded up in a major way. ten
pounds of locks, five pounds of water, and five to ten pounds of beach
related items. The bike handled a bit loosey goosey at first but i got
used to it after a block or so. in fact the hilsen handled this load
better than i anticipated, made it through some hairy parts of
brooklyn and eventually to the beach.
as we were hurriedly leaving, i realized that my marks rack had
wiggled its way to the front of the mounting strut causing the strut
to bend thus compressing the silver brakes and impeding my front
wheel.
as i was readjusting restrapping and resecuring my load so i could
free the brake. a rivver on an atlantis and his friend rolled up.
they asked how i liked the bike etc
i was so brain fried from the heat and frazzled by my rack sitution,
that i think i was a bit curt.
i didn't get to say how much i loved the bike, and how well it handles
doing things that it is and sometimes isn't supposed to do
anyway if any of you was this person, i'm sorry for seeming cold. i
was actually hot, but anyhow i love the bike, and long for fall.

[RBW] Re: bombadil and overloaded ahh

2010-07-21 Thread jamison brosseau
the roads are pretty rough here, after years of riding skinny tired
track bikes, i made the switch to these fatter tired rivs and couldn't
be happier. there are also plenty of off road rides in queens staten
island, the bronx and new jersey as well as upstate. these puffy
tired bikes have lead me to find these places, and being able to ride
in the woods while still in the city has certainly improve my quality

The fishnet works well with breathable synthetics on top. My fishnets of
recent have all been synthetic as well. I have also found this system to work
well with cotton flannel and wool. When I used to frame houses in Iowa in the
winter lots of us would wear pantyhose bottoms and mesh jersey tops as a base
layer, they worked remarkably well too, though I was happy to find a purpose
built alternative.

Hunqapillar, 59 Clem L, and an older 61 Atlantis, so it’s not like I’m lacking
mountainy bikes to ride.
Bottom line: I want a 56 Bombadil and a MIT Atlantis. (And a 60cm Cheviot)

So I ordered a 60cm Cheviot in RBW Blue last night. Still trying to decide on
sizing for the Atlantis. Still looking for a 56 Bombadil.
Enjoy the long weekend.

Hi Matt, I live in NYC, so probably too far for a test ride, though I
appreciate the offer.

Todd, congratulations on the new bike! I too am a bit worried about missing
out on whichever frame size I choose.

[RBW] Largest Yves Gomez?

They did a 62 Betty Foy. I’m pretty sure the Yves Gomez was a rebadged and
stickered B Foy.
