Re: [RDA-L] French-language book, cataloged using English, with summary in French
In a private response, someone said to put the summary in quotation marks. You could put it in quotes, followed by dash and the library in 040$a. You are quoting the library which created the record. Yes, if you can read the summary then you can read the book, and vice versa. Vice versa if more relevant I think. I would not remove data which might be helpful to some patrons. Rules are supposed to help us, not limit us in serving patrons. Rules were made for us, not us for the rules. __ __ J. On the other hand, you'll have to admit it would be a courtesy to potential readers of the item to include a summary in the language of the item-it would certainly be a discourtesy to delete it if someone has contributed it. I know many of our patrons are less than fluent in speaking or reading English, even though they can figure out how to use the catalog. I generally try to include bilingual summaries where possible, i.e. in languages I can handle. I've also seen some real howlers generate by Google Translate or Babelfish that were clearly not vetted by a native speaker-now that's a discourtesy. Misha Schutt Lead Cataloger Burbank (Calif.) Re: [RDA-L] French-language book, cataloged using English, with summary in French
Thanks for the citation, Mark. I sometimes provide a summary in Spanish, Russian, or Polish for resources in those collections, reasoning as Misha does that mostly native speakers of those languages will be looking for those materials. (Usually cribbed from a book cover or publisher's website, I should add, rather than totally homemade.) I think RDA 5.4 is non-prescriptive enough to be read as allowing this. We should be aware that LC and PCC practice as set forth in the LC-PCC PS for 5.4 prescribes English. Even so, I see no reason not to provide parallel summaries when the information is readily available. On Thu, Oct 10, 2013 at 2:09 PM, M.
