[RE-wrenches] new type of overcurrent protection

2015-10-15 Thread Kirk Herander
A local electrician found this disconnect "protecting" a 3-phase air
handler.

Commercial DYI - Vermont-style.

I've used them a few times and have them on my home due to a small shade issue.
Like mentioned the monitoring is great, lots of data. Never had a problem with
any parts.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Racking for Steep Roofs

2015-10-15 Thread Garrison Riegel
Thanks for the responses.

I called UniRac and IronRidge who both confirmed they max out at 45°. UniRac
said anything over 45° is considered a wall and requires different testing and
certification. They said the primary concern is the end clamp which holds the
module by friction only. Mid clamps should hold no problem. They suggested
getting an engineer to stamp a custom bolted end clamp solution and we should
be good.

I’ve been looking for a good excuse to try Snap n Rack…

Thanks,

Garrison

Can anyone recommend a flush mount racking system for really steep roofs? I
have two projects coming up on 15/12 (~51°) and none of the usual manufacturers
we use for flush mounts (IronRidge XR, Unirac SolarMount, Schletter Solo, DPW
Powerrail) can handle this apparently…at least according to their design tools
and manuals.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

What about the Morningstar Relay Driver? You could use one port as battery
voltage sense, another to control the gene start relay, third to sense
generator voltage and 4th to control AC relay via a timer to allow generator

Exactly! And fully programmable voltage, charge timers, equalization, etc. I’ve
been begging Magnum Energy to do this. About 4 years ago they started telling
me they were working on it. I guess they don’t realize how many are needed. I
sell lots of Iota because I can tweak the voltage but that’s still primitive
compared to what is really needed.

Sorry boB, I retract my advice then :-)

Ive done it fine (I do like to use big filter caps on the input to clean up
ripple) and keep close tabs on whats going on.

My listeroid has been running into an MX60 for many years (7 or 8 years)
without issues at around 3kw into 48v bank, and has proved to be the most
reliable way to couple a generator that I know of (for what its worth).

We are not really advocating doing this. It can cause nightmares in service
and support.

If one really knows what they are doing, it can be done (and has been done)
but mere mortals should not
be attempting to do this.

I would get a real AC to DC charger. If IOTA isn't good enough, maybe
Magnum's is
ready or did I hear that the big "X" has had one or two of these for quite
some time now ?

Power factor corrected even ?

Re: [RE-wrenches] AGS sensitive battery charger

2015-10-15 Thread b...@midnitesolar.com

The industry needs a GOOD battery charger ! PFC and fully adjustable
with battery shunt interface, gen-start,
etc. That could be used for lots of installations like this one Chris
is looking for. It's needed all the time.

It's a no brainer what features it should have.

I've wanted to do this here for quite a while but there have been too
many irons in the fire as it is.

be the most reliable way to couple a generator that I know of (for

[RE-wrenches] AGS sensitive battery charger

Re: [RE-wrenches] Racking for Steep Roofs

2015-10-15 Thread Allan Sindelar

Garrison,
I'm here in a campground in the Emerald Triangle with Jeff Spies,
who works for Quick Mount PV, and so I read him your message. He
suggested that you take the engineering specs from UniRac and
IronRidge to the AHJ, showing her pullout and shear capacities and
calculate both for your site, including snow and wind loads. The
maximum applied load should be less than the published working load
rating.

If the AHJ doesn't accept this approach, the next step is to get a
structural engineer to review the same and wet-stamp the result.

This legitimately gets around the manufacturers' certification issue
on an individual case basis.

I
called UniRac and IronRidge who both confirmed they max out
at 45°.
UniRac said anything over 45°
is considered a wall and requires different testing and
certification.  They said the primary concern is the end
clamp which holds the module by friction only.  Mid clamps
should hold no problem.  They suggested getting an engineer
to stamp a custom bolted end clamp solution and we should be
good.

I’ve
been looking for a good excuse to try Snap n Rack…

2015-10-15 Thread Jeff Irish
Did you look at Unirac SunFrame? It uses shared rails and a continuous cap
strip. The installers can also set the modules in the rail which is really
nice on steep roofs. If you are in a freeze/thaw climate contact me off-line
because there’s a subtle thermal contraction consideration to allow for.
